Current Research on Eating Disorders:

How do children with eating disorders differ from adolescents with eating disorders at initial evaluation? Peebles R, Wilson JL, Lock JD. PURPOSE: To compare the clinical presentation of children with eating disorders (ED) to that of adolescents with ED. METHODS: Demographic, medical, and psychiatric data of all 959 in- and outpatients (85 males, 874 females) 8-19 years of age diagnosed with ED that presented to an academic center between 1997 and 2005 were examined via retrospective record review. Young patients (n = 109) were defined as aged < 13 years at presentation, and older patients (n = 850) > or = 13 years and < 20 years. RESULTS: Compared with older adolescents (mean 15.6 years, SD 1.4), younger patients (mean 11.6 years, SD 1.2) were more likely to be male (chi2 = 9.25, p < .005) or diagnosed with eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) (chi2 = 5.09, p < or = .05), and less likely to be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (BN) (chi2 = 13.45, p < or = .001). There were no significant differences in anorexia nervosa (AN) diagnoses between groups. Young patients were less likely to report purging (chi2 = 26.21, p < .001), binge eating (chi2 = 26.53, p < .001), diet pill (chi2 = 13.31, p < .001) or laxative use (chi2 = 6.82, p < .001) when compared with older teens. Young patients weighed less in percentage ideal body weight (p < .05), had a shorter duration of disease (p < .001), and had lost weight more rapidly than older adolescent patients (p < or = .001). CONCLUSIONS: There are important diagnostic and gender differences in younger patients. Young ED patients presented at a lower percentage of ideal body weight and had lost weight more rapidly, which may put them at higher risk for future growth sequelae than their older counterparts.  Source: Division of Adolescent Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California 94040, USA. rpeebles@stanford.edu.

Online/Self-Help Programs:

Improving Eating Disorder Treatment and Outcomes: Comprehensive eating disorder treatment requires a team approach that includes individual therapy, family therapy, nutritional counseling, and working with a primary care physician. Those with eating disorders need access to a set of tools and resources that will reinforce treatment techniques and provide support throughout recovery. These resources may include self-help books and workbooks, support groups, and online resources. Even residential treatment programs, which are staffed around the clock, still need to provide clients with such resources. MySelfHelp.com programs provide online help and support for your clients and their family members 24 hours a day, and can serve as a valuable adjunct to the treatment you provide. These programs encourage and engage your clients with interactive exercises, personalized feedback, and reminders to complete assignments, practice new techniques, and stay in touch and share results with you. A free family support program engages and supports the family in the recovery process educating them about the illness, the importance of therapy, and how they can help and support their loved one and themselves.

Family of Programs Developed through NIMH Funding:
The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive, online, self-help programs includes Defeating Depression, Take Control of Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management, Conquer Insomnia, Overcoming Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem, Coping with Grief, Caring for Your Loved One, Help for Compulsive Shopping, and Hope for HIV and Depression, as well as a moderated member Discussion Board.  MySelfHelp.com programs were developed in part through grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, and programs are designed to complement therapy, reinforce treatment goals, and improve treatment outcomes.

Clinical Trials Show Positive Results:
MySelfHelp.com just completed clinical outcome studies on the Stop Binge Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating Depression, and Conquer Insomnia programs, and the results showed a 43% decrease in binge eating and a 51% decrease in purging after three months and a 45% decrease in binge eating and 59% decrease in purging after six months of using the programs. Results are similar for depression symptoms. Detailed results can be found on the individual program pages at www.MySelfHelp.com.  Positive results such as these are leading more providers, from solo practitioners to residential treatment centers, to recommend the use of interactive self-help programs to their clients.

Complimentary Preview for Healthcare Professionals:
Healthcare professionals who have not reviewed the programs, or who would like to take another look to see recent changes and new programs, can receive a complimentary review of the programs. Simply contact info@MySelfHelp.com and identify yourself as a healthcare professional.

Marketing Tips:

5 Mistakes made by Eating Disorder Professionals:

1) Assuming that since you receive this newsletter, you have a current membership with EDReferral.com and your information is listed on the site. (Just because you receive this newsletter does not mean your membership is current.)

2) Not updating your profile on EDReferral.com. We have new categories listed on our application and the more you can say about your practice, the more clients can find a good match with you.

3) Not understanding that clients use our site to see if a professional is legitimate.  Even though there is no way we can personally screen each applicant, some professionals do not feel that they need a listing and do not realize that clients are checking our site to see if they are listed with an internationally respected organization.

4) Not having a professional phone message system.  The first contact is by phone.  If it is not professional, then clients will move on. Be sure to ask each caller how they heard about you.

5) Not saying anything additional on your profile.  Adding a paragraph about yourself, helps to personalize your information and sets you apart from other professionals. When a client is looking for a good match, they want to find someone with whom they can connect before they make the first call.

NOTICE: GET PUBLISHED! Send us an article you have written which would be of interest to our readers and we will publish it on our site.  We can accept one article per month.  Indicate whether it is directed towards professionals or clients. Email the article to edreferral@aol.com. For examples see: http://www.edreferral.com/Latest_Developments_in_Eating_Disorder_Treatment.htm

EDReferral.com Membership Dues Increase: Our rates still remain significantly lower than all our major competitors.  So far we have only increased our dues for our new members and those who fail to keep their membership dues current. If you want to renew now and lock in your membership dues at the current rate, email us and we will direct you to a special page for our charter members which will allow you to renew at the old rates for either one year or 2 years (with an additional discount)

Increase Referrals with a Second Office Listing on EDReferral.com: If you have 2 offices, you can list the second office for only $55 for the entire year--that works out to less than $3 a month.  Many therapists have commented that this has worked out well for them in terms of increased referrals.  Also make sure that your listing is up-to-date and covers all areas of the eating disorder field where you provide treatment.  This will help when people are searching for you on our site. For more information visit www.EDReferral.com or email edreferral@aol.com.

Banner Advertisingthanks to all who have supported us with a banner on our site.  We only allowed 2 banners on every page except the home page and in just a few short months, they are almost all taken (we do have a new popular page with some openings). Thank you to everyone for their support. For more information on any advertising space still available email edreferral@aol.com.

Newsletter Protocol: Our newsletter goes out to thousands of professionals and laymen via email (over 10,000 individuals). EDReferral.com receives numerous requests by professionals to have information included in the newsletter. Unfortunately, we have limited space to include information, thus here is the current protocol:

1. All information must be submitted to edreferral@aol.com no later than the 20th of each month. Inclusion in the newsletter will be based on a first come - first serve basis.

2. Information is subject to review and editing for space considerations.

3. If you are a member, send us information on conferences, workshops, support groups and projects and we will list this information on the website for FREE as we have always done. We want to support your work. If you are a member and you would like your event to also be announced in the newsletter the charge is $80.00.
