SINGING MELODY RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE "COLLIDE" OFF UPCOMING ALBUM
|
|
(Kingston, Jamaica) With a career spanning more than 20 years, Jamaica’s acclaimed lovers rock singer Singing Melody will on September 14th reintroduce himself to fans in a big way with the premier of the first official single from his soon to be released album "They Call Me Mr. Melody". Produced by Lynford "Fatta" Marshall the new single entitled "Collide" will lead the way for the highly anticipated 13 track album which the man best known for hits such as "Want You Back" and "Say What" has been working on since the start of the year.
According to Melody the song which was demoed two years ago was a perfect fit for the album and a wonderful gift to the fans who will buy it. "Collide is an amazing song that tells a story of a couple who are in love but have problems communicating and that drives them apart but eventually they reunite. Two years ago Fatta came to me to do that song and I ended up doing a demo for it but never completing the project until recently. Initially I didn't want to put a cover song on this album but I have some of the most loyal fans in the business who have stayed with me and supported me over the years and so I decided to give my them a gift in the form of a Free single thus Colliding or reuniting with my fans".
With plans to shoot a video for "Collide" already in the pipeline Singing Melody is now gearing up for a rigorous promotional campaign aimed at re-branding the singers image to include that of a younger audience while maintaining the sheer sophistication of a true pioneer.

BLUE GLAZE MENTO BAND NEW RECORDING CALLED 'WE WILL WAIT' FEATURES TOOTS, STRANGER COLE AND BUNNY WAILER
|
|
Founded over forty years ago Blue Glaze Mento Band has long been considered one of Jamaica's finest Mento Bands. The group developed a somewhat more contemporary sound in the last decade, however, backing up reggae singer Stanley Beckford for two records and a European tour.
In this latest recording the band features much vocal versatility, particularly from singer Vernal Morgan, veteran of both Duke Reid and Ms. Pottinger's studios in the Sixties. Yet there are are original recordings from two other band menbers, as well as guest appearances from Stranger Cole, Toots Hibbert and Bunny Wailer.
Adding to the Wailers connection are Sticky Thompson (percussion) and Lee Jaffe (harmonica).
Review by Roger Steffen:
"For all those wondering where the bawdy lyrical bents and sociological explorations of Jamaican music originated, this wonderful collection of mento-era updates, anchored timelessly by some of its foundation artists, will answer your questions. Toots Hibbert and Bunny Wailer reveal their indebtedness to the pre-reggae roots music of Jamaica's country folk, mourning their dead, praising their maker and laughing at the humorous folly of man's sexual pecadillos. A refreshing surprise and important addition to the canon."
-Roger Steffens, Co-Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee

BLONDIE RELEASES FIRST ALBUM IN EIGHT YEARS INCLUDES REGGAE
|
|
Debbie Harry performs recently at the House of Blues in Chicago. Daniel Boczarski/Redferns
'I couldn't do it unless we were dedicated to being creative and making new music,' says Debbie Harry By Andy Greene
Blondie's new LP Panic of Girls hit shelves on September 13th, but it's actually been in the can for well over a year. "It took so long to get out in America because we were figuring out how to distribute it," says Debbie Harry. "For a lot of bands like Blondie, it becomes increasingly hard to get a record deal because there really are no record companies. We're doing it on Amazon here in America."
As is always the case with Blondie, the songs on the LP are very musically diverse – ranging in style from pop to dance and even reggae. "We've always tried to do a mixture," says Harry. "I've always thought it was directly related to New York City because there's so many different things going on there. It used to be that everything was very regional. The radio down South used to be different than the stuff you'd heard in New York or Chicago or Los Angeles. That's completely changed now. I think that's one of the special things that New York has always had. All these different styles exist simultaneously."
The band's creative process has changed little over the past three decades. [Guitarist] Chris [Stein] does the music and creates tracks for me," says Harry. "Then I sort of go off and try and put together a bunch of ideas and we toss it back and forth – and then I'll just go sit down and try to flesh it all out." Most of the tracks are original, but the band did record a reggae cover of "Sunday Smile" by Beirut. "I saw them in concert and was really impressed," says Harry. "Chris had this great affection for reggae, so we put a little reggae twist on it."
Blondie reformed in 1997 after a 15-year hiatus. Unlike many reunited bands from their era, they have continued to regularly make new music. "That was an agreement we made when we put the band back together," says Harry. "I said I couldn't do it unless we were dedicated to being creative and making new music. I had no interest in being in an oldies band." They do play many of their big hits on their current tour, including "Heart of Glass," "Call Me" and "Rapture." "We're finding that the new material is mixing in well with the hits from the past," says Harry. "We're getting really good feedback, but you can't please everybody."

ERNIE SMITH - JAMAICA’S CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
Iconic Reggae singer Ernie Smith has been waving Jamaica’s flag very high the past couple of months, with performances and guest appearance at cultural celebrations in North America. Performing at Jamaica Day in Canada, Jamaica’s Independence Day in New York, and Emancipation Day in Jamaica, Smith proves to be one of Jamaica’s most enthusiastic cultural ambassadors.
In addition to his Jamaica Day performance, Smith did a two week tour of Canada, playing clubs and festivals throughout the country, before shooting down to New York for the August 6th Jamaica Independence festival in Brooklyn. This coming weekend, Smith will be on the West Coast with a performance in Los Angeles.
Since the beginning of his career in the late 1960s, Ernie has penned over 200 songs, several of which have been recorded by other artists, including Goldie Hawn, Johnny Nash, Rita Marley, Chakka Demus & Pliers, Sanchez, Twiggy, Eddie Lovett, Yellowman, famed gospel group Grace Thrillers and others. He has made an indelible mark on Jamaican music with Reggae classics “Bend Down,” “Ride On Sammy,” “One Dream,” “Pitta Patta,” and “Duppy Gunman.” In 1972, he beat songwriters Neil Sedaka and Michael Legrand, to win the Grand Prize at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, and became the first Jamaican musician to win an international music award.
Ernie has hit many of the world’s greatest stages including repeat performances at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden. His anthology After 30 Years: Life is Just for Living was published in 1997. His latest album Country Mile was released in 2010 and features popular IRIE FM radio DJ Ron Machete, and veteran performer Pluto Shervington. In June, Ernie released the humorous single “Nutten A Guh Come Outta Dat.”
Junior Kelly:
AFTER A SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN TOUR, JUNIOR KELLY SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE UNITED STATES
Root Reggae champion Junior Kelly spent much of the summer blazing a trail across Europe with powerful performances at the Chiemsee Reggae Festival in Germany, and the Sudoeste Festival in Portugal, where he shared the stage with American superstars Snoop Dogg and Kanye West, as well as roots legends Alpha Blondy, and Inner Circle. Kelly also gave rousing performances at the Garance Reggae Festival in France, Ruhr Festival in Germany, and the Oland Roots Festival in Sweden. The hectic tour also included club dates in Italy, Amsterdam, Denmark, and Slovenia.
After much success in Europe, Junior Kelly is eager to blaze a trail across the United States of America this fall. The well-seasoned and powerful performer was sorely missed at summer festivals throughout the United States, and is now set to give American Reggae music lovers precisely what they’ve been demanding.
Keith ‘Junior Kelly’ Morgan has spent the past decade touring the world as one of roots Reggae’s strongest acts. His breakthrough single “Love So Nice”established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. “Love So Nice” spent 15 weeks at the top, making it the island’s longest charting number one single for 2000.
The album Love So Nice, released in 2001, also spawned the well-received singles“Sunshine,” “Boom Draw” and the biting social commentary “Hungry Days,” which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Kelly followed up Love So Nice, with Juvenille (2002), Conscious Voice (2002), Smile(2003), Bless (2003), and Tough Life (2005), His latest album, Red Pond (2010) features the lilting lovers rock tune “Too Late” with Queen Ifrica, “Murderer,” a ferocious admonishment of gun violence, and “African Child” which was partially inspired by Kelly’s unforgettable visit to Haiti.
Earlier this year, Junior Kelly released the critically acclaimed single “Mister Mighty,” which is currently in rotation on stations around the globe. www.reverbnation.com/juniorkelly

Yellow man (born Winston Foster, 15 January 1956, Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae (rub-a-dub) and dancehall deejay, widely known as King Yellow man. He was popular in Jamaica in the 1980s, coming to prominence with a series of singles that established his reputation. Winston Foster grew up in a Catholic orphanage called Alpha Boys School in Kingston, and was shunned due to having albinism, which was usually not socially accepted in Jamaica. Alpha Boys School was known for its musical alumni. In the late 1970s Yellow man first gained wide attention when he won a contest event in Kingston, Jamaica called "The Tastee Talent Contest" where deejays would perform toasting. Like many Jamaican deejays, he honed his talents by frequently performing at outdoor sound-system dances. In 1981, after becoming significantly popular throughout Jamaica, Yellow man became the first dancehall artist to be signed to a major American label (CBS Records). One reviewer of Yellow man was quoted as saying "Listening to Yellow man sing is like watching Michael Jordan play basketball. He knows he's got it, you know he's got it, and it's a trip just experiencing him perform.
His first album release was in 1982 entitled Mister Yellow man followed by Zungguzungguguzungguzeng in 1983 earning instant success. Yellow man's sexually explicit lyrics in popular songs such as "Them a Mad Over Me" boasted of his sexual prowess, like those of other reggae singers/deejays, earned Yellow man criticism. in the mid-1980s. Yellow man appeared in Jamaican Dancehall Volcano Hi-power 1983 which featured other major dancehall musicians such as Massive Dread, Josey Wales, Burro Banton and Eek-A-Mouse. Yellow man has had a substantial influence on the world of hip hop. He is widely credited for leading the way for the succession of reggae artists that were embraced by the growing hip-hop community in America during the 1980s.[citation needed] Eazy-E used a sample of his voice from his recording "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt", which also became a major hit by Eazy-E with the same title. The basic riddim of his hit "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng" can be traced throughout the hip hop scene as it was reused by such hip hop giants as KRS-One, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Blackstar, formed by Mos Def and Talib Kweli.

REGGAE HISTORY MADE: MISTA MAJAH P FIRST JAMAICAN REGGAE ARTIST TO RELEASE PRO GAY 13-TRACK REGGAE ALBUM
|
|
Mista Majah P has just released his new reggae album, marking a huge step in the career of the multi-talented singer-songwriter. The lyrical focus of the album is to liberate the homophobic and celebrate the LGBT (lesbian gay bi-sexual transgender) experience. The release of this album will hopefully build his fan base and get his music heard by more people than ever, especially in his native home of Jamaica.
The CD, ‘Tolerance’, consists of 11 original songs, each providing a combination of his melodious vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears treatment to roots-reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, pop and r&b.
The album was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered at Shaolin Studio in Hayward California and all songs are written, performed and produced by Majah P. The theme of the album underlies the changes he has gone through in recent years with marriage, a new son and becoming an American citizen. It was these changes of status that allowed him this opportunity to explore, through his music, the experience of all who have suffered hate, intolerance, discrimination and bullying because of their sexual orientation.
‘Tolerance’ reveals raw lyrical emotions, pulsating drum-and-base reggae rifts, plus the stunning array of influences that have found their way into his music. He was already soaked with the red gold and green roots of reggae music when he migrated to Toronto, Canada in 1982 and carried with him the new sound ‘Reggae DanceHall Roots”, which he unleashed on the Canadian reggae music scene. He was nominated 10 times for the Canadian Reggae Music Award, winning on four occasions, including ‘Entertainer of the Year’ in 1997. He has performed all over the USA, Canada, Jamaica and England and brings to the live stage his special brand of total entertainment.
Also an accomplished actor, Mista Majah P has appeared in three feature films including the highly acclaimed “Cop and a Bad Man” performing on screen and writing and performing one of the sound tracks. He has appeared in over ten music videos and released over 12 music CDs.
He does not shy away from including political references in his music; this can be deduced from the samples of his songs in ‘Tolerance’, which include sound bites and excerpts from news broadcasts relating to homophobia.
With the release of ‘Tolerance’, Majah P has broken new ground by taking on the cultural intolerance of a section of his native Jamaican society, and the LGBT rights debates in the halls of the US Congress.
Fans are encouraged to visit the artist on MySpace and Facebook. Sample tracks are available at cdbaby.com, itunes and independentdistro.com

GENE CLEMETSON : : IRON SHORE
|
|
“For the past 15 years or so, guitarist / singer Gene Clemetson has made his reputation in the NYC Reggae scene as an ace guitarist for such music legends as Max Roach, The Meditations, Burning Spear, The Congos, Easy Star All Stars, Wyclef Jean and others. But now, he's stepped out on his own as a leader. After all these years, Gene now presents his long awaited project that combines his Reggae roots with Jam Band performance philosophy. His debut CD "Iron Shore" delivers this formula with great aplomb.
"Iron Shore" represents Gene's roots on the northwest coast of Jamaica. It is an album that transcends many moods, from melancholy to aggressive, from meditative to downright carnal, all with the mandatory foundation in Reggae rhythm. The CD features singles such as "Give It Up", "Woman With a Past", "Hotel California", and a rootsy interpretation of Jerry Garcia’s classic "Sugaree". Guest appearances by Jamaican musical legends Sly Dunbar (drums) and Stephen Stewart (mixing engineer, keys) only help to sweeten the mix. These tracks showcase not only Gene's lofty vocals but also the blazingly deft guitar work for which he is so well known.
Purchase Site: itunes, Spotify, Amazon, Zune, Rhapsody, Tunecore
After you get the CD, check out Gene and his band at a venue near you.”

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows.
