CD & DVD Releases
...Keepin' up with the Jones' |
|
|
Dennis Jones : DOIN' WHAT IT TAKES |
|
"My Kinda Blues is Dennis' best release to date. With the exception of guest appearances by Guitar Shorty and Kenny Neal on one track each, this record is simply Dennis and his trio laying down some serious blues rock that stands up to anyone on the current scene. He writes timely, clever lyrics (listen to "Same Train" or "Text Us Girl" ) and is not afraid to tackle what some might call a controversial subject, as in "Jesus or The Bottle." In addition to his fine lyrics, Jones writes beautiful instrumental lines, as witnessed in his tribute to his hometown on the album's closer, "Baltimore Blues." This record has 13 tracks, all but one a Jones' original, that keeps the blues sounding fresh and propels the music forward. My Kinda Blues sounds like one of 2012's best records that will push Dennis into a broader national spotlight, which he so richly deserves." Brett Fleming, WEVL Memphis.
My Kinda Blues is on the Blue Rock Records label and set for release on June 9, 2012. Available at CD Baby

Lloyd Jones : DOIN' WHAT IT TAKES |
A gifted singer, songwriter, guitarist and respected band leader, Lloyd Jones writes timeless music, steeped in a rich musical history learned, lived and loved over four decades. “This is not a work of science. It’s about attitude and joy that applies to all age groups. I’m addicted to this music,” declares Jones.
Jones’ new CD, Doin’ What It Takes, showcases seven originals plus rare gems from Leiber and Stoller, Maceo Merriweather and Gerald ‘Lonnie’ Russ.
Joe Louis Walker, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Coco Montoya and former band mate Curtis Salgado, have all recorded his songs. And Delbert McClinton sings his praises, “When I heard Lloyd Jones live for the first
time in January 1999, it was like exhaling after holding my breath for fifteen years!”
He’s a musician’s musician and a crowd-pleasing, energetic showman. He’s earned every fan he has the hard way. What he does, he says, is “combine New Orleans rhythms, the simplicity of Memphis music, and the rawness of the blues, all for the 21st century. This music is not about louder and faster. It’s about time, meter, groove. I thought Muddy and Walter and those guys were pushing the envelope in their era. They were using effects, they were inventing their own sound. They were modern. I want to look at it in a contemporary way.”
Jones is a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, and recipient of 31 Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, including Lifetime Achievement.

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT 15TH BRIGGS FARM BLUES FESTIVAL |
The 15th Annual Briggs Farm Blues Festival was held on July 6th & 7th 2012, in Nescopeck township near Berwick PA on the beautiful rolling hills of the Briggs Family’s tenth generation, working farm.
Briggs Fest, once again, had record attendance with 5000 campers and concert goers, combined, in attendance over the two days of this landmark event.
The line-up was spectacular between the Main Stage and Back Porch stages. The stages featured several local up and coming acts along with Eddie “The Chief” Clearwater in full headdress, Bernard Alison, Chris Beard, Moreland & Arbuckle, Alexis P. Suter Band, CKS Band, Clarence Spady, Mikey Jr & The Stone Cold Blues Band, Lonnie Shields, Rory Block, Michael Packer Blues Band and Lindsey Alexander. One of the many highlights of the festival was the rousing performance and homage to the late great harmonica player Paul Butterfield by The Butterfield Blues Band, featuring his eldest son, Gabriel Butterfield, Jimmy Vivino, Steve Guyger, Pete Levin, Jimmy Eppard and Jim Curtin.
The festival offers two days of great music in a laid back and down-home atmosphere with delicious food. Camping is a huge part of what Briggs Farm is all about, too. Saturday and Sunday mornings campers can enjoy a southern style robust breakfast - grits included y’all. This is not just a Blues fest… but a total Food fest as well
The Briggs Family [also] offered free hayrides... an hour long ride through the corn fields, woods and camping areas of this 400 acre paradise.
They had an interesting and eclectic array of vendors [including] eco-friendly camping supplies, Amish Vittels, Glass Blowers, hammocks... not your average fest vendors by any means.
From the time you arrive on the farm you feel the day to day pressures of life fall away….you are greeted at the gate with a smile and welcome by all the staff and Briggs family members….If you have not experienced Briggs Farm Blues Fest add it to your list for 2013!!! Great Vibe – Great Music and Great Fun!

RUF RECORDS ANNOUNCES 3 NEW RELEASES |
New! - Girls With Guitars LIVE
The Girls With Guitars 2012 Samantha Fish (USA), Dani Wilde (UK) and Victoria Smith (UK) present their brand new live album. This document of the tour was recorded live at Musichall Worpswede (Germany) on February 11th, 2012. If you were lucky enough to witness the "Girls with Guitars" – get ready for an evening of blues that is sure to be just as dynamic and musically compelling.
At Ruf Records.de available now!
Joanne Shaw Taylor - Almost Always Never
Recording in Austin, Texas, these 12 cherished cuts were nailed alongside Mike McCarthy – the producer whose gold-plated CV takes in everyone from Patty Griffin to Spoon – and the crack session team of David Garza (keyboards), Billy White (bass/slide guitar) and J.J. Johnson (drums).
As you’ll gather from a cursory spin: they aced it. Ultimately, Almost Always Never is Joanne’s statement. From the savage Les Paul solos of "Soul Station" to the strutting rock hooks of "Standing To Fall," this record will delight the fans who clutch the security rail at Joanne’s gigs, waiting to be scorched by her guitar pyrotechnics. Yet there’s tenderness too, and from her aching suicide-note to a failed relationship on "You Should Stay, I Should Go" to the title track’s touching refrain of, “You crash, you burn/you live, you learn”, this eloquent songwriter has never sounded more open and honest. By the time you reach the slow-burn, "Lose Myself To Loving You," she has you by the heart-strings.
You can buy it in stores starting Sept 17th or at Ruf Records.de available now!!
Royal Southern Brotherhood
Cyril Neville - Devon Alman - Mike Zito
Charlie Wooton - Yonrico Scott
This lineup has talent to burn. They said that rock ‘n’ roll was dead, but they were wrong. Right now, in 2012, there’s something in the air, as The Royal Southern Brotherhood drag their thrilling new brand of blues-rock and white-hot musicianship from the Southern States onto the world stage. The South is rising again.
Come along for the ride!

The blues began on porches and in backyards, ramshackle juke joints, barns, and wide places in the road... And some musicians are perfectly happy to keep it there. But even though the music is unplugged, that doesn’t mean it does not rock. The Grammy winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, Guy Davis, and more – keeping the traditional blues alive.
The traditional Blues. Next time, in the BluesMobile.
