Henry "Dancing with the Blues" Tate shows off his BFG. He even helped distribute 1,100 of them at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest, Western Maryland Blues Fest, Billtown Blues Fest and Tinner Hill Blues Festival along with some help from the DC Blues Society and Baltimore Blues Society.
Henry says, “Only a nominal were placed on a table for picking up. I circulated through the festivals and blues events and explained to many recipients exactly what value they were receiving for free. I encouraged them to sign up for the free weekly emails.”
Thanks Henry… you’re our hero!

Kelly Joe Phelps : BROTHER SINNER AND THE WHALE |
|
It’s as thin as the edge of a razor, the road separating Heaven from Hell, sin from salvation, redemption from despair. It’s a lonely road to go down and like the old gospel says, you’ve got to walk it for yourself. Kelly Joe Phelps has been doing lot of soul searching since his last record, Western Bell came out in 2009. Three years later, his journey has wound its way to a recording studio in Vancouver, and Kelly Joe has once again beaten a path to Steve Dawson’s door with a new batch of songs tucked into his satchel that reflect both the new insights gained along the journey as well as things that have been dropped by the wayside.
Since his debut album, Lead Me On, came out in 1994, the Pacific Northwest based singer and songwriter has written and performed some of the most compelling slide guitar based music ever recorded. Playing a lap slide in a style that both evoked the sounds of the ancients and pointed towards new possibilities for the instrument, Kelly Joe’s music seemed to originate in another time as he sang with the voice of an old soul, weary with experience, yet excited with all of the prospects that life brings.
With song titles like "Talking to Jehova," "I’ve been Converted" and "The Holy Spirit Flood," there’s no escaping that something has grown and changed in Kelly Joe’s world.
Phelps explains some of the motivation behind the new songs. “When I found a way to allow myself to open up to creative impulse, this is what was staring me in the face and I did not want to say no to anything. “
Listen to Brother Sinner and the Whale and you’ll certainly agree.

Zac Harmon : MUSIC IS MEDICINE |
|
The blues have been the curative for "the blues" for nigh on a hundred and twenty-five years or so. However, it is the exceptional musician who understands and commands the universal power of the music so thoroughly that he can use it to literally create a healing force. Singer, songwriter, guitarist Zac Harmon has been producing the most soulful sounds forever, but rises above his own accomplishments with Music Is Medicine.
Zac Harmon was born and raised in Jackson, MS, cutting his musical teeth at Jackson's historic Farish Street District. As a teen, he gigged with local legends like Z.Z. Hill, Sam Myers, and Dorothy Moore. He moved to L.A. in the 80's and worked as a studio musician, writer, and producer for artists like the O'Jays, the Whispers, Alexander O'Neal, Karyn White, and Black Uhuru.
Though he enjoyed success, Harmon longed to return to his blues roots and, in 2002, he released a live disc, Live at Babe & Ricky's Inn, a strong release that put Harmon firmly in the "Next Generation" of blues artists. In 2004, his band won the IBC's "Best Unsigned Band" award, and followed up that release with 2005's impressive The Blues According to Zacariah, which won the BMA for Best New Artist Debut in 2006. Harmon followed up with a pair of releases, 2008's Europe-only Shot in the Kill Zone, and 2009's From the Root.
His music has always been biographical at times, but Music Is Medicine is probably his most personal album yet.

Curtis Salgado was a prime inspiration for the Blues Brothers. The Oregon based soul singer can really tear it up. On the heels of winning the 2012 Blues Music Award as "Best Soul Blues Artist," Curtis has a brand new album, SOUL SHOT, backed by the hottest funk combo out there, the Phantom Blues Band.
A righteous shot of soul with Curtis Salgado. Next time, in the BluesMobile.
