Rick Holmstrom : CRUEL SUNRISE |
|
Cruel Sunrise is Rick Holmstrom's first solo recording in five years and features Mavis Staples on two tracks. All 12 songs on Cruel Sunrise were written or co-written by Rick Holmstrom. The recording is also available as a limited "Deluxe Edition" which features a second disc of all instrumentals. They are Rick's unique take on classic songs including "You Send Me," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "I'll Take You There." Both the single CD and Deluxe Edition were released on August 28.
Rick and his band have been recording and touring with Mavis Staples for the last five years. He received a Grammy in 2010 for his work on Mavis' You Are Not Alone, produced by Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco).
No doubt both blues aficionados and rock music fans will enjoy Cruel Sunrise, a record that honors Rick Holmstrom’s ongoing reign as a statesman of the blues while pointing to his future as a songwriter to be reckoned with.
“Great blues guitarists are about tone, mood, and style. Being nimble helps, but intensity and passion more often exist between the notes. Rick Holmstrom revels in this abundance.” All Music Guide

Ian Siegal : CANDY STORE KID |
For this new album Ian returned to the Zebra Ranch studio in Coldwater, Mississippi, where he recorded his Blues Music Awards nominated The Skinny. Candy Store Kid takes its name from a line in the song "Loose Cannon," and the thrill that Ian felt as he pick-‘n’-mixed some of the greatest players on the contemporary blues scene (“You get to feeling like the proverbial kid in a candy store,” he recalls).
Ian is renowned for his songwriting but killer songs were only half the equation. Spin Candy Store Kid and you’re also hearing chemistry. As Ian stepped up to the microphone he was flanked by his dream-team of local legends that he collectively coined The Mississippi Mudbloods. Cody Dickinson is a towering presence on drums, percussion and piano. Dickinson’s multi-instrumentalist brother and Black Crowes sideman Luther Dickinson was enlisted to add guitar and mandolin, and bass on several tracks. Ian first met Alvin Youngblood Hart during 2010’s The Skinny sessions, when the Grammy-winning guitarist swung by the studio and ended up tracking some guitar and backing vocals. There was a mutual desire to work together again, and he was welcomed back on bass, guitar and backing vocals.
Inevitably, when word spread that a limey musician was tearing it up at the local studio, Zebra Ranch became a drop-in centre, with cameos from Garry Burnside, who provides sizzling musicianship on four tracks and composition on "Strong Woman;" and Lightnin’ Malcolm, who penned "So Much Trouble." Ian’s gravel-flecked voice is also supplemented on several songs by the soaring backup of Stefanie Bolton, Sharisse Norman and Shontelle Norman. The candy store was open for business.

THE NEW CD FROM TERESA JAMES & THE RHYTHM TRAMPS
"COME ON HOME" NOW AVAILABLE! |
"She can sing like a bird or a bat out of Hell!"
A mayor of a small Texas town once introduced Teresa to the stage with this colorful description of the Texas singer. By all accounts, the new CD, Come On Home, by Teresa and her band, the Rhythm Tramps is a powerful example of this - combining her strong vocal presence with the immense songwriting talents of her partner, Terry Wilson, along with the world class musicians performing here, this is a CD that definitely deserves a listen. To quote Brett Fleming, from WEVL in Memphis... “the new disc by Teresa James is amazing!”
Come on Home is the eighth CD from this artist; nominated for a Blues Foundation award in 2008 and an IMA in 2010, this CD has been in the making for a while and it definitely shows. From the raunchy title track opener, "Come On Home," to the soulful, Otis-style ballad, "Forgetting You," this CD covers the spectrum of blues and R&B with the feel of a Texas roadhouse. It includes ten original songs that show the full range of the band’s talent and influences. As freelance music critic, Dave Barry wrote, “It’s just… natural soul coming through... a set of pipes that make me enjoy it so much I want to cry and smile at the same time.”
Check out her website: www.teresajames.com for sample cuts and live videos of the band.
Upcoming dates:
September 29 - Valencia Jazz & Blues Festival (Valencia, CA)
October – Lombardi Ranch Pumpkin Festival
November 2 – Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse (Durham, NC)
November 3 – Tater Jam (Kinston, NC)
January - Sandy Beaches Cruise – Delbert McClinton & Friends

BUDDY GUY AMONG 35TH ANNUAL KENNEDY CENTER HONOREES |
PHL17.COM The five honorees have been announced for the 35th annual Kennedy Center Honors, which salutes individuals or groups from a wide variety of the performing arts each year in Washington D.C.
The five chosen for 2012 are blues legend Buddy Guy, actor Dustin Hoffman, rock band Led Zeppelin, comedian and host David Letterman and ballerina Natalia Makarova. Might we suggest for the broadcast that Makarova dance to the greatest hits of Led Zeppelin while Guy joins them on the guitar. That would be rather amazing.
Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein says in a statement:
"With their extraordinary talent, creativity and tenacity, the seven 2012 Kennedy Center Honorees have contributed significantly to the cultural life of our nation and the world. Buddy Guy is a titan of the blues and has been a tremendous influence on virtually everyone who has picked up an electric guitar in the last half century; Dustin Hoffman's unyielding commitment to the wide variety of roles he plays has made him one of the most versatile and iconoclastic actors of this or any other generation; David Letterman is one of the most influential personalities in the history of television, entertaining an entire generation of late-night viewers with his unconventional wit and charm; Natalia Makarova's profound artistry has ignited the stages of the world's greatest ballet companies and continues to pass the torch to the next generation of dancers; and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant transformed the sound of rock and roll with their lyricism and innovative song structures, infusing blues into the sound of rock and roll and laying the foundation for countless rock bands."
The 2012 Kennedy Center Honors will air Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS
