The Capone Mob : DEVIL HAVE THE BLUES |
|
Big News! Devil Have The Blues, the anticipated debut pre-release from The Capone Mob, is touted as one of the most important debut albums of this decade. Downloads are available here.
The Capone Mob, the vision of blues-rock guitar ace Mikey Capone, worked on the music for five years and recording began in August 2011. A result from those first sessions is "White Lightnin" which was named "Best Blues Song" by Backroads Blues and Mikey earning the title of Backroads Blues' "Best Blues Rock Guitarist" and "Best New Blues Artist."
"If I could use only one word to describe Mikey Capone as a guitar player it would be WOW! That guy plays the F%$^ out of that guitar. Like a lightning bolt struck him. Not only was his guitar plugged in but he was plugged in. My jaw dropped watching Mikey play and he is about as tasty as you can get." - Steve Rosenberg
Devil Have The Blues includes “Iron Man,” a powerful, personal tribute to the late Michael Burks featuring deft slide work; “Mountain Man,” a cross between Hendrix and Allman Brothers with a sensational slide guitar solo; “Upon The Crossroads,” a masterful piece about the legendary bluesman who sold his soul to the devil, features a riveting slide intro and memorable guitar work; “Deal With The Devil,” a haunting, unique “call and response” chain-gang-style song reminiscent of the 1920’s, “Me And My Cigar,” a catchy, shuffle blues with flirtatious lyrics; “Good Time Blues,” a fun Rockabilly song; and “Garden of Love,” a melodic instrumental with a Hendrix vibe.
“The Capone Mob’s Devil Have The Blues really delivers. Without question, one of the most important debut blues releases of this decade”.
- Clayton Hamel, Backroads Blues
Devil Have The Blues is scheduled for release November 2, 2012 and a tour is being planned for 2013.

Little G Weevil : THE TEASER |
The Teaser, the second solo album by Little G Weevil`s, was recorded in September 2011 at Jeff Bakos`studio in Atlanta, GA. Bakos has engineered Shemekia Copeland`s Never Going Back and Susan Tedeschi’s Wait For Me as well as produced albums by Sean Costello, Derek Trucks, Clarence Fountain, Delta Moon among others.
The Teaser offers 12 original songs written by Little G Weevil, eight full band tracks and four solo tunes. On the electric cuts, Little G Weevil uses his custom made Fibenare Basic Jazz guitar. It was 100% handcrafted by the Hungarian Benedek Brothers. On solo cuts he uses a 1940 Kay Archtop. All slide works is on a Bacon Fat cigar box guitar made in Alabama.
“Little G Weevil has made the blues...southern blues in particular...a way of life...an amazing player...a singer and a songwriter, he moves from Hooker to R.L. Burnside to Chuck Berry and old school Mississippi Delta without breaking stride.”
- Elwood Blues aka Dan Aykroyd, House of Blues Radio Hour
Within The Teaser you will find stories and passion and music of a man who literally left everything behind to follow his calling to the world of raw blues music. Little G Weevil has the backstory fodder on par with his predecessors. He was a calloused Beale Street dishboy to get close to the music and soaked up the estranged fruits of the Mississippi Hill country. He’s bounced from Memphis to Birmingham to Kennesaw. Yet the closest to home he feels and the best friendship he has you’ll find right here in these twelve songs.
“A man at the height of his creative abilities, honoring blues tradition but adding modern rock rhythms to the mix as needed.” – RA, The Examiner

18TH ANNUAL COLUMBIA BLUES FESTIVAL |
Columbia's 18th Annual Blues Festival (hosted by the nonprofit, Word of Mouth Productions) is slated for November 3, 2012 at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park (2300 Greene St.) in the Five Points section of Columbia, SC. This continuous, free concert usually positions itself in the civic calendar on the open date of the University of South Carolina's football schedule.
Word of Mouth has just turned 21. Our first show was a club date featuring Chris Smither. Since then we've treated audiences to a wide range of musical styles - English folk (Pete Morten), Irish traditional (Len Graham/Cathal McConnell), early Euro folk/rockers (Martin Carthy/Dave Swarbrick), Gospel killers (The Campbell Brothers), folk blues (Etta Baker), Miss. Hill Country (RL Burnside), electric Chicago (Hubert Sumlin), La. Delta (Tab Benoit) and a slew of our musical heros from J Winter, J Hammond, D Robillard, the subdudes, D Lindley, Sonny and Leo. Someday, we'll fix what we're missing - Buddy, BB, Bonnie and Taj.
Tom Principato ~ Eddie Shaw
This year, the power packed guts of our show was booked early - Tom Principato and EddieTurner. Late in September we found Eddie Shaw (with his fabulous guitarist son, Vann Shaw) touring Florida, heading this way, and a group new to us, Swamp Cabbage, 100 miles away and finishing their tour the day before our show. Stay tuned, this is our mid-afternoon treat and, soon to be voted "best sleeper set" of what will be another gracious day in the park.
Eddie Turner ~ Swamp Cabbage
The 2012 schedule can be found on our site. Please take time to thank the 100 plus volunteers, our lovely local business advertisers and the City's Hospitality Tax grant funding.

MA RAINEY BLUES FESTIVAL PAYS TRIBUTE TO MOTHER OF BLUES |
Rome News-Tribune...
The Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation is preparing to bring the blues to Rome [Georgia] in the form of the Ma Rainey Blues Festival, Nov 2-3 at the DeSoto Theatre.
Jim Powell, a Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation board member, said Ma Rainey is considered “the Mother of the Blues.”
Born Gertrude Pridgett, Ma Rainey is a Columbus native who made over 100 recordings including “Bo-weevil Blues,” “Moonshine Blues,” “See See Rider,” “Black Bottom” and “Soon This Morning.” She was known for her powerful vocal abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing and ‘moaning’ style of singing.
“We named it after her to celebrate her life and musical contributions,” Powell said. “Also, she has a connection to Rome.”
In 1935, Rainey returned to her hometown in Columbus where she ran two theaters until her death from a heart attack in 1939 in Rome.
The festival will pay tribute to Rainey and to the blues and begins Nov. 2 with a Pub/Blues Crawl featuring performances by Lon Eldredge, The Booze Mountaineers, The Rick Fowler Band and other local bands/artists including Stephen Smith. Guests will be able to purchase a Pub Crawl arm band at the DeSoto Theatre or any of the performance venues to gain entrance. Those venues include The Brewhouse Music and Grill, 333 on Broad, The Moon Roof Bar, Schroeder’s New Deli and Gallery 318.
The $10 price will allow patrons to enjoy blues festival music at all participating locations.
On Nov. 3 the festivities continue at a concert featuring Mac Arnold and the Plate Full ‘O Blues band starting at 8 p.m. at the DeSoto Theatre. Lon Eldredge will also be opening. Tickets for the concert will be $15. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation and its preservation of the Theatre.
“We feel that the more scheduling of programs we do, the more people see our efforts,” Powell said. “And then they can help with our funds to restore the building.”
Tickets are now available for purchase. For additional information and tickets, visit online at www.desototickets.com, visit the DeSoto box office, Gallery 318, or call 706-295-7171.

OFFICIAL CENTRAL VALLEY BLUES SOCIETY WEEKLY DANCE PARTY
FEATURE RON THOMPSON AND HIS RESISTORS |
The official Central Valley Blues Society weekly dance party is free and features Ron Thompson and His Resistors every Thursday, 6-9 pm. Dubbed the weekly "Stress Relief Party", this is the longest running blues show in Fresno - 9 years.
The party is held at the Babylon Club in the Tower District, 1064 N. Fulton Street, Fresno, CA (559-495-0852).
Not many living blues musicians can say they have performed with and recorded for legends like Big Mama Thornton, Tina Turner, Bruce Willis, Luther Tucker, Jimmy McCracklin, Pee Wee Crayton, Carla Thomas, Booker T. Jones, Percy Mayfield, Etta James, B.B. King, and Jimmy Reed. Ron Thompson can, and that’s just the beginning.
Ron Thompson is a legendary rhythm and blues guitarist and master keyboardist whose career began in the rough and tumble world of East San Francisco Bay nightclubs and bars in the early ‘70s. During many years of touring coast to coast with John Lee Hooker, Hooker was quoted as saying, "Ron Thompson, he's my main man!"
After serving as John Lee Hooker’s bandleader for seven years, Thompson went on to form his own group, Ron Thompson and His Resisters
Tom Mazzolini, founder and producer of the San Francisco Blues Festival, said of Ron Thompson, “I’ve always felt Ron is the most talented blues guitarist I’ve ever seen. He can do it all. He’s extraordinarily gifted. What many folks aren’t aware of is that Ron was a huge asset in the re-emergence of John Lee Hooker. He was the foundation for that boogie sound.”
Do yourself a favor and catch Ron Thompson and His Resistors every Thursday, sponsored by the Central Valley Blues Society, and check the society website to find other shows and jams around the Bay Area.
