Tas Cru : TIRED OF BLUESMEN CRYIN' |
|
Heh, where's my knife and fork? Who took my plate away? Well . . . Biscuit (2006), gravi-Tas (2008), grizzle n' bone (2009) and Jus' Desserts (2010) is more buffet for a blues belly to fill up on than after church Sunday brunch at the Shoney's. Time to clear the table, clean the kitchen and stack the dishes.
Released Oct 2, 2012, Tired of Bluesmen Cryin' continues to solidify Tas Cru's reputation as one of the most unique of bluesmen plying his trade today. The eleven songs are a canvas for his blues poetry - telltale life lessons crafted with his signature rare verbal flair -songs that are powerful and passionate, eccentric and quirky, and often boldly irreverent. Cru's ability to craft a hook is magical and it is not for nothing he has been called "the master of the triple entendre."
Cru's love affair with both traditional and modern blues styles is in evidence, and as expected, the record will appeal to fans of both acoustic and electric blues. Cru proves he is equally at home on acoustic, resonator, and electric guitars and his trademark rawcuss homemade Tejano Cigar Box. Rich vocals and downhome delivery bring a front porch feel to this album.

Craig Chaquico : FIRE RED MOON |
Craig Chaquico, platinum-selling guitarist and songwriter with Jefferson Starship and chart-topping Smooth Jazz solo artist, takes a walk on the bluesier side of the street with the release of his Blind Pig debut, Fire Red Moon.
From the radio-friendly opening track, “Lie To Me,” (with vocal by Noah Hunt of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) to the thunderous conclusion of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads,” Chaquico explores the thoroughfares and back alleys where blues and rock intersect. There’s an instrumental version of Albert King’s signature tune, “Born Under A Bad Sign,” a rousing cover of Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ And Tumblin’,” and sterling originals that echo the sounds of blues/rock forerunners such as Cream, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, and Steely Dan. There’s even an instrumental tune entitled “Blue On Blue” that would appeal to Craig’s many smooth jazz fans.
Now entering the fifth decade of his illustrious career, with the release of Fire Red Moon Chaquico continues his improbable journey from the boy-wonder of 70's rock to genre-defying success as a top jazz and new age guitarist, returning now to the roots blues he listened to in his early teens.
Says Chaquico, "The multi-platinum stadium rock period in my musical life was as rewarding as it was fun, and part of my higher musical education. And as much as I still love instrumental smooth jazz, which for me was always blues-based anyway, I sometimes missed the edge that I could experience with blues-based rock and roll."

The Capone Mob : DEVIL HAVE THE BLUES (listen to new track!) |
Devil Have The Blues, the anticipated debut pre-release from The Capone Mob, is touted as one of the most important debut albums of this decade. Downloads are available here.
The Capone Mob, the vision of blues-rock guitar ace Mikey Capone, worked on the music for five years and recording began in August 2011. A result from those first sessions is "White Lightnin" which was named "Best Blues Song" by Backroads Blues and Mikey earning the title of Backroads Blues' "Best Blues Rock Guitarist" and "Best New Blues Artist."
"If I could use only one word to describe Mikey Capone as a guitar player it would be WOW! That guy plays the F%$^ out of that guitar. Like a lightning bolt struck him. Not only was his guitar plugged in but he was plugged in. My jaw dropped watching Mikey play and he is about as tasty as you can get." - Steve Rosenberg
Devil Have The Blues
includes “Iron Man,” a powerful, personal tribute to the late Michael Burks featuring deft slide work; “Mountain Man,” a cross between Hendrix and Allman Brothers with a sensational slide guitar solo; “Upon The Crossroads,” a masterful piece about the legendary bluesman who sold his soul to the devil, features a riveting slide intro and memorable guitar work; “Deal With The Devil,” a haunting, unique “call and response” chain-gang-style song reminiscent of the 1920’s, “Me And My Cigar,” a catchy, shuffle blues with flirtatious lyrics; “Good Time Blues,” a fun Rockabilly song; and “Garden of Love,” a melodic instrumental with a Hendrix vibe.
“The Capone Mob’s Devil Have The Blues really delivers. Without question, one of the most important debut blues releases of this decade”.
- Clayton Hamel, Backroads Blues
Devil Have The Blues was released November 2, 2012 and a tour is being planned for 2013.

Kelly Richey has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” That’s an apt appraisal of the Lexington, Kentucky native who has been compared to such legends as Jimi Hendrix, Walter Trout, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey’s masterful guitar chops capture an audience with muscular, explosive guitar leads that will astonish even the most seasoned blues enthusiast.
Passionate and electrifying, Richey has been touring as a pro since her teens. For over 30 years, Richey has been burning up the fret board on her Strat with hard-hitting, riff driven, original, blues-based rock.
Kelly Richey fronts her power trio, The Kelly Richey Band, with a gutsy authority and fret board prowess that leave stunned audiences in her wake. Simply put, her live shows have to be seen to be believed. The heady combination of Richey’s powerful alto voice and the sheer intensity in her playing solidify Kelly Richey’s standing among the best blues guitarists known today.

JOE BONAMASSA TALKS GUITARS NOT POLITICS |
Utica-area native Joe Bonamassa now calls Malibu, Calif., home. / Christie Goodwin
Chronicle.com
Yes, Rochester and Joe Bonamassa go way back. Back to 1990, when he remembers playing here as cherubic 13-year-old, opening for B.B. King in the Downtown Festival Tent during the Lilac Festival. And poking around in the House of Guitars: “645 Titus Ave.,” Bonamassa says, proving he still remembers the address of that Irondequoit musicians’ Mecca.
And the Red Creek Inn, he remembers it as well. Bonamassa was minutes from taking the stage to play a sold-out show when someone from the state Labor Department showed up and said the kid didn’t have the right permits for a minor to play a place where liquor was being served. Bonamassa had been performing in clubs all over western New York for the year prior. New York City, Boston and Hollywood as well. But in Rochester he had to answer to, as he figures it, “some old woman concerned citizen.”
The morality police can relax. Bonamassa is 35 years old now, a handsome, smart guy showing no ill effects from his derelict pre-driver’s license days. His interest in guitar was first ignited at age 4, when he heard a recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and it has been an unrelenting upward spiral since then.
A case could be made that Bonamassa has been the busiest blues-rocker on the planet this millennium. He’s released 16 albums since 2000, plus three with his hard-rock side project, Black Country Communion. And he plays about 200 shows every year, including one Friday at the Auditorium Theatre.
Bonamassa long ago left his hometown of Yorkville, 15 miles northwest of Utica, fashioning a life as World Traveler With Guitar. He confesses to watching cable news on the tour bus when he’s not asleep, but that’s all you’ll get out of him on that angle.
“Politics, that’s something we will not discuss,” he says adamantly. “That’s something I’ve learned after 1,000 interviews. Do not discuss politics with news reporters.”
He’s careful what he reveals. Geography is a safe topic. “You go to Germany and see the dome in Cologne and you think, ‘That’s something I used to look at in books, and now there it is, for real,’ ” he says. “When you’re standing in Red Square, as someone who grew up in the ’80s, if I had gone there at that time I would have been arrested, tried as a spy, thrown in prison and never come back. Now you go to Red Square and you see a Cartier and Lenin’s Tomb. The paradigm has shifted. The world’s come a long way.”
