Curtis Salgado :: SOUL SHOT |
|
"Everything that makes Curtis Curtis is here at a high level [on Soul Shot]. His searing but nuanced gospel-drenched blues and soul vocals and his hip, fat-toned harp, applied judiciously but to great effect, are highlights as always. Four strong originals blend his deep immersion in the legacy of the genre with his up-to-the-minute street sense, as does his informed and tasteful selection of covers (of The O'Jays, Otis Redding, O.V. Wright, Parliament, Johnny "Guitar" Watson/Frankie Lee, Bobby Womack et al on ), all conveyed with swagger and virtuosity.
With production from Marlon McClain and Tony Braunagel and his own co-production, and using a foundation of the highly regarded Phantom Blues Band plus some distinguished cameos, Curtis and his cohorts pack a seamless and powerful punch..."
(Excerpts from liner notes by Dick Shurman)
Soul Shot is set for release on Alligator Records April 10.

Red Lotus Revue ~ FOURTEEN STORIES |
|
Fourteen Stories, the self-produced debut of San Diego-based band, Red Lotus Revue, is an ode to old-school, bare-knuckle Chicago Blues. Recorded live in the studio, the CD features seven originals and seven favorite and obscure interpreted tales by Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Johnny Shines and Smokey Smothers. The Red Lotus Revue consists of the songwriting duo of Karl Cabbage (vocals and harmonica) and Jimmy Zollo (guitar) with Pete Fazzinni also on guitars and Kurt Kalker on drums. As Michael Kinsman, critic for Blues Revue and the San Diego Union Tribune writes, “Red Lotus is a band whose strength comes knowing what it wants to do and each member executing that precisely. A great example of what a band can be.”
Despite Fourteen Stories being a debut, all band members have participated in the annual International Blues Competition finals in Memphis, TN. Cabbage and Fazzini also won the Best Blues Award at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards. The CD is currently in the IBC Final 5 for "Best Self-Produced CD." Fourteen Stories charted on the Living Blues Report in December. Elwood Blues (Dan Aykord), exclaimed that Red Lotus Revue is "A very tight band."

CLARKSDALE FILM FESTIVAL UNDER HOLLYWOOD SPOTLIGHT |
Clarksdale, MS - For its third year in a row, the Clarksdale Film Festival aims to make you laugh, cry and, occasionally, rock out. Organizers promise attendees a feast of Mississippi and Southern filmmaking – plus a little fresh popcorn.
According to Garden & Gun magazine, "Mississippi gets its close-up... to celebrate the Magnolia State's films and filmmakers" at the festival.
"The Clarksdale Film Festival isn't just about great movies," said Nan Hughes, president of the non-profit that organizes the event. "It's also a wonderful excuse to experience the entertainment and restaurant mini-mecca that our revitalized downtown has become. What other small Delta town offers such great movies, food, history tours, museums, shopping and live music in the middle of winter?"
The Clarksdale Film Festival runs Thursday-Sunday, January 24-27. The main downtown screening venue is historic Delta Cinema (11 Third Street) with a secondary venue at Channel Ziltch (119 Third Street). More information is available at www.jukejointfestival.com or 662-624-5992. Tickets are $5 per day or $10 for a weekend pass; available at the Delta Cinemas box office during festival hours. Official festival hats and shirts are also available.

BLUES FOUNDATION AFFLIATED BLUES SOCIETIES INJECT IBC |
The Blues Foundation affliated blues societies keep blues fresh by sponsoring self-produced cd's, bands, solo/duo acts and youth entrants to IBC. While we don't have room here to list ALL the IBC entrants, some of you may have heard the news about these particular artists' efforts who have already reached "Finalist" status. Once the IBC Best Self-Produced CD winner has been chosen however, "finalists" are, well, just that. I know... So, a heartfelt congratulations from myself (your esteemed editor, Michele Lundeen) and everyone at BFG go out to those advancing to the Final Round of the Best Self-Produced CD competition. "Thank you to the affiliates," says The Blues Foundation, "for continuing to foster new Blues acts to keep this genre alive!"

JACK WHITE'S LABEL TO REISSUE BLUES CLASSICS ON JAN 29 |
Aboutblues.com - Jack White Has The Blues... This is an extremely cool, albeit totally unexpected bit of news. While it's nothing new that former White Stripes frontman, solo artist, record producer, and label executive Jack White has long had a thing for the blues, none of us ever thought that he'd take it beyond the odd Robert Johnson cover on a Stripes' LP.
Putting his money where his mouth is, White's Nashville-based Third Man Records has inked a deal with U.K. archival label Document Records to reissue a number of classic blues collections on uber-cool 180-gram vinyl with funky new 21st century cover artwork. The first three releases will feature Delta blues legend Charley Patton, a major influence on bluesmen like Howlin' Wolf; Piedmont bluesman Blind Willie McTell, made popular by the Allman Brothers Band's cover of the guitarist's "Statesboro Blues"; and the Mississippi Sheiks, whose "Sittin' On Top of the World" has become a bona fide standard covered by hundreds of blues, rock, and pop artists. The Third Man releases follow Document's The Complete Recorded Works series, presenting each artist's songs in chronological order.
