This past week we had two essentially decadent "holidays." Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday and Valentine's Day (umm, tough break on Valentine's for those that decided to give up chocolate for Lent). I hope that you all at least got yourselves a dose of good music... whether the quintessintal "Second Line" or even some of that "Careless Love." Maybe next week you'll be hearing bands playing "Dead Presidents" (also referred to as "federal issue stationary" which is what I ask folks to write their requests on when I'm performing!) HA!
The Clearwater Sea-Blues Festival happens this weekend in Clearwater, Florida along with a few others around the globe... the Linn County Blues Society is having their annual Blues N Buffet Chili Challenge (see articles this issue). As a reminder to Blues Societies, please order your FREE magazines ASAP... festivals and artist... post your listing online!
Don't forget to check out all of the Blues Festivals (see our listings) and artists' gig listings on our website! AND, if you haven't already... please join us on Facebook!

CD & DVD Releases
Charles "CD" Davis :: 24 HOUR BLUES
Nominated for a 2013 Blues Music Award for the Best New Artist Debut, 24 Hour Blues is a surprisingly, smokin’-hot album produced by Charles “CD” Davis, guitarist for the late Calvin Owens. Traditional with a contemporary flair, the album features a gang of veteran musicians and vocalists that bring the house down. 24 Hour Blues demonstrates Davis's versatility on guitar with fiery leads and solos that are, as Frank-John Hadley writes in Downbeat, “...always shot through with soul and heart.
Jabo, the Texas Prince of Zydeco and blues and soul giant Rue Davis know how to have a good time, laughing, cutting up, and telling the joys of an “Old Fashioned Woman.” The sexy-voiced styling of jazz singer Roberta Donnay tempers the mood with “That’s How I Learned to Sing the Blues” and “A Minor Thing.” Blues and soul diva Trudy Lynn tears up “It’s Tight Like That” in Davis’s killer, foot-stompin’, arrangement.
“I always wanted to record a quality album that has a variety of blues styles featuring the guitar in different roles. So, we have unplugged style tunes, small group tunes, and medium-sized band with horns. We also included a tune I wrote for Calvin Owens that features his style of big band,” says Davis.
“He can wail on the guitar and finger-pick deep blues, but it's full-on, soulfully arranged brass and guitar-driven songs [that] show the essence, the power, and the pull of big-band blues,” writes Jim Beal Jr.
Rounding things off on 24 Hour Blues is Davis, whose guitar “cuts through ice, fire, and smoke” and “closes with [an] incendiary instrumental showcase,” says Mark S. Tucker who adds, “This is the blues CD of early 2013.”
Teeny Tucker's new 2013 CD, Voodoo To Do You has been released to rave reviews. “…the best female blues vocalist on the scene today!” declared James “Skyy Dobro’ Walker, in a Feb 2013 Blues Blast magazine review.
In 2012 Teeny Tucker continued to receive standing ovations at major Blues Festivals while preparing material for Voodoo To Do You and her YouTube video hit 90,000 views. In 2011 Teeny was nominated by the Blues Foundation for “Best Traditional Female Blues Artist” (Koko Taylor Award) and “Traditional Female Blues Artist of the Year” by Blues Blast. This was also the year her “Sun Session” TV episode aired on PBS TV stations across the USA. “Sun Session” was recorded live at the world-renowned Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. In 2010 Teeny took home the “Monterey Bay Blues Artist of the Year.” Her 2010 release, Keep The Blues Alive, had Blues Blast exclaiming, “Following her 2008 critically acclaimed CD, “Two Big M’s,” Teeny Tucker and her band lay down one of the best CDs of the year!”
“Each of the thirteen selections on Voodoo To Do You, (five originals and eight covers, including a stunning, masterpiece version of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Death Don‘t Have No Mercy”) center on the tantalizing titular subject,” says Blues Blast. “Each track showcase Teeny’s vocals magnificently, especially the original compositions, "Love Spell," "Shoes," and "Sun Room."
Enjoy this vocalist and entertainer extraordinaire in her prime. Teeny has never been better, and the band is squeaky tight on Voodoo To Do You.”

24 HOUR BLUES NOMINATED FOR 2013 "BEST NEW ARTIST DEBUT"
24 Hour Blues has been nominated by the Blues Foundation for a 2013 "Best New Artist Debut Album" Blues Music Award.
A veteran of the late Calvin Owens’ Blues Orchestra, this first-time album from Charles “CD” Davis is smokin’ hot and along with the diner motif and accompanying menu describing each song, features something for everyone.
"Davis and the crew hit the big-blues‐band mark with originals and a couple of classics. Davis can wail on the guitar and finger-pick deep blues but it's full-on, soulfully arranged brass and guitar-driven songs … show the essence, the power and the pull of big-band blues. Here's to several more hours of Davis' blues.”
– Jim Beal Jr, San Antonio Express-News and Third Coast Radio
Awesome vocals and strong instrumental solos have propelled this album to be aired around the world. Now he'd like your vote to take it over the top.

The Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club and the Linn County Blues Society traditionally hold their Annual Blues ‘n’ Buffett Chili Challenge,
Sunday, February 17, 1-4pm, at the Cedar Rapids Marriott Hotel
1200 Collins Rd NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402. (Weather Date: March 10)
The Chili Challenge is a friendly competition between the two clubs to raise money for charity.
Proceeds from the event benefit the H.D. Youth Center and the Community Free Medical Clinic of Cedar Rapids. The Parrot Heads chose the Free Medical Clinic to help support costs for those who need medical assistance that is not affordable. LCBS chose H.D. Youth Center which provides a safe place to go as well as food to under-privileged youth. In 2010, the event raised over $5,000 for these two fine organizations. Over $35,000 has been raised and donated to local charities in the first 10 years of the event’s existence.
The public is invited to attend to taste the various chilis and vote in a variety of categories. Additional vote tickets for the People’s Choice award are available for 50 cents each. The club receiving the most votes will receive a plaque and their club’s charity will receive 51% of the proceeds from the event; the runner-up club 49% of the proceeds for their charity.
The contestants in the Chili Challenge are members of the two clubs, and each brings their own special chili and booth decorations to share. There have been as many as 30 chilies for tasting. Celebrity Judges will be on hand to taste and vote on the Best Chili. The club receiving a majority of judge’s votes for the Best Chili receives a traveling trophy and bragging rights for their club. Video of The Week
"Careless Love Blues"
Janis Joplin (Live at Threadgills, Austin, TX 1962)
CRITTERS ~ CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS ~ GUYS DAVIS & more
They can be man’s best friend or his worst enemy. They can be cute and cuddly, or fierce and, frankly, slobbery and gross. This week the Bluesmobile is swarming with… Critters!
Then, in the second hour of the program…the blues began on porches and in backyards, ramshackle juke joints, barns, and wide places in the road. And some musicians are perfectly happy to keep it there. But even though the music is unplugged, that doesn’t mean it does not rock. The Grammy winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, Guy Davis, and more – keeping the traditional blues alive.
Spiders, dogs, bees, gators and more critter Blues PLUS the traditional Blues…next time, in The BluesMobile.
