Intel Math Program for K-8 Teachers

The State of New Hampshire is on the move to improve student learning in mathematics and is proud to bring the Intel Mathematics Program to K-8 mathematics educators.

The Intel Math course is a content-intensive professional development program developed by Dr. Kenneth Gross, Professor of Mathematics and Education at the University of Vermont.  It provides 80 hours of professional development in the form of a course co-facilitated by a practicing mathematician and a mathematics educator.  The course places emphasis on deepening the participants' understanding of core K-8 mathematics concepts.  It is grounded in a problem solving approach to topics such as integer arithmetic, the decimal number system, place value, rational number arithmetic, rates, linear equations, and functions. About 90% of the course is focused on mathematics content knowledge and the remaining 10% on pedagogy.

You are eligible to participate in this program if you meet both criteria:
1. You currently teach in New Hampshire at K-8 level.
2. You are K-3, K-6, or special education certified, but not 5-8 or secondary math certified.

Dates for the NCES, Gorham, NH location: June 24, 25, 26, 27, July 1, 2, 3 and July 8, 9 & 10, 2013 from 8:00 to 4:30.

Cost: Free, $30 fee for the optional 6 (paid-in-full) graduate credits.

Help Your Students Succeed with Algebra by Implementing Common Core Standards

All grade 6 – 10 Mathematics teachers are invited to participate in a free, grant-funded, 3-day institute at NCES. This institute is led by the New Hampshire Impact Center at Plymouth State University, in alliance with the Rural School Educator Effectiveness Collaborative.

Participants will be encouraged to explore how to:
  • build algebraic reasoning using multiple representations
  • use differentiated instruction in presenting algebraic ideas
  • adhere to standards for mathematical practice
This institute is a continuation of the one offered in September 2012. At the same time it can be considered as an independent unit. While everyone interested in innovative ways of teaching algebra is welcome, teachers who participated in the first part of this institute offered in September are especially encouraged to apply.

Dates/Times:

Location: North Country Education Services, Gorham, NH

Institute for Nature-Based Learning

  • Conduct a field investigation
  • Investigate and analyze a local environmental issue
  • Work with scientists and natural resources professionals
  • Build inquiry skills for project-based learning
  • Be part of a professional learning community
The Institute for Nature-Based learning is a year-long professional development series for middle and high school educators that is aimed at providing a greater understanding of ecological concepts and forest management, products and issues as related to cultural, social and economic contexts while preparing students to be environmental volunteers in their community.

Sessions will provide the inspiration, knowledge and investigative skills required to transform classroom teaching into effective and exciting project-based education about natural resources using public and community-based lands. You will be part of a professional learning community that will increase content knowledge and develop skills that will allow you to integrate Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards into your classroom.

Teachers who participate in the program develop (or modify) their own curriculum unit to increase student literacy skills, critical and systems thinking as well as scientific practices required for field investigations. The project-based approach integrates hands-on study of the natural and cultural resources of the local community, address concepts in ecology, sense of place, civics, and forest land management and stewardship. At the heart of the program is the belief that students who are immersed in the interdisciplinary study of their own “place” are more eager to learn and be involved in being environmental volunteers in their communities and on public lands.

Although the value of this package is over $3500, the all-inclusive registration fee for this yearlong series is $400 per person. This includes eleven days of professional development, extensive curriculum materials, great food, implementation grants up to $200, and seven nights’ accommodations at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest - http://nrs.fs.fed.us/ef/locations/nh/hubbard-brook/ , home of the world-renowned Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study. Graduate credits are available for an additional fee.

Study in Ireland
“It was the best and most enjoyed learning experience in my long history of college and university study,” said one teacher about last year’s 23-day study trip, Seminar: Education in Ireland.  Teachers and administrators spent three weeks at the National University of Ireland (NUI) ,Galway, as students of how education is organized and structured in Ireland.

Bernard Keenan, NUI Galway coordinator, noted “this course is designed to study the Irish Education System and concurrently to study the history, literature, and culture of Ireland through lectures, seminars, visits with Irish educators and guided cultural tours”.  Along with meeting their Irish contemporaries, the participants conducted their own research in areas which represent their professional interests such as curriculum, assessment, special and vocational education, and school administration.

The summer 2013 program is scheduled from July 4 – July 27 and the enrollment deadline is April 1, 2013.  Six graduate credits will be awarded for successful completion of the program of study. For additional information contact:
