Greetings From Your Editor... |

Hold the tobacco... the blues are smokin' |
Some of you may be waiting (or not) to hear what wacky Holidays are happening this weekend. I just can't resist to tell you that Friday, May 31st is "National Macaroon Day!" It's also "World No Tobacco Day"... now these are two holidays to celebrate in my book. Haven't smoked in years and I've been known to spend $$ on giant macaroon's at David's Deli in San Francisco!
Blues birthdays of note: Rich Delgrosso (June 1), blues mandolin master, multiple BMA Nominee and KBA Recipient. Othar "Otha" Turner (June 2), one of the last well-known fife players in the vanishing American fife-and-drum blues tradition. He sadly passed in 2003. Memphis Minnie (June 3), the influential guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter that held her own on all fronts.
Whether planning a road-trip or drving across town, you can mark your calendars for a numbers of great festivals coming your way. See some highlights in this issue plus check our listings frequently!
Talk to ya next week!
Your ever-grateful editor...
Michele Lundeen

Billy Boy Arnold, Charlie Musselwhite, Mark Hummel, Sugar Ray Norcia, James Harman :: REMEMBERING LITTLE WALTER |
|
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Little Walter Jacobs receives a fitting tribute on this sparkling live recording, Remembering Little Walter, bringing together five of the greatest harmonica players currently on the blues scene - Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Boy Arnold, Mark Hummel, James Harman, and Sugar Ray Norcia.
The virtuosic Little Walter is without doubt one of the most influential blues harmonica players of all time. All five of these fine players share a deep love for and keen insight into the revolutionary force that Walter's music brought to bear on the Chicago blues scene of the 'fifties and 'sixties.
Two of the participants, Charlie Musselwhite and Billy Boy Arnold, actually knew and played with him and are joined here by three other harpists, each renowned in his own right.
On Remembering Little Walter, each artist performs two tracks from Jacob's discography, then they collaborate on a balls-out, jamming finale of Walter's signature tune, "My Babe." Backing throughout is crisp and solid, featuring Little Charlie Baty, world renowned guitar slinger and former bandleader of Little Charlie and the Nightcats who also solos on harmonica on the finale. The band also includes Nathan James (guitar), June Core (drums) and RW Grigsby (bass). This one of a kind live harp showcase is a recording no blues fan will want to miss.

Austin Young & NO difference :: BLUE AS CAN BE |
|
Fasten your seatbelts for Blue As Can Be, the debut recording from Colorado's Austin Young on Vizztone. At 17, he delivers deep passion, exciting showmanship and electrifying musicianship. His inspirations range from blues giants to guitar masters.
Austin is an astounding guitarist, naturally emotive singer, and prolific songwriter. His songs deliver Blues feeling in both traditional and original styles. Blue As Can Be showcases a nice variety from Austin and his NO difference bandmates.
“I enjoy the ‘crossroads’ moment of Austin Young as his live and recorded efforts reveal an exciting prodigy claiming his destiny. I see no limit to his talent as a guitarist, singer, entertainer, bandleader, and magnetic new force of nature. The buzz has already begun in his home of Colorado and from his performances in Helena and Memphis. Austin proves himself every day. Am I hyping him or actually too restrained? Austin Young will deliver an obvious answer.” – Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin

TRIPLE BLUES THREAT NIGEL MACK WITH BLISTERING SLIDE, KILLER HARP AND POWERFUL VOCALS NOW BOOKING! |
Don’t try to put bluesman Nigel Mack in a box. Bucking the usual labels, the multi-instrumentalist/songwriter and disciple of Chicago blues knows how to unite American roots music into one hot sound.
On his latest award-winning album, Devil’s Secrets, and live on stage with his band, the Blues Attack, Mack shows that harp players can wield a mean slide guitar, that zydeco, funk and R&B can blend with expert blues and that origins and background mean less and less in Chicago’s welcoming, but hard-hitting scene.
This kind of defiant mix comes naturally to the Saskatoon-born, Vancouver and Chicago-forged musician, who grew up catching blues and jazz legends before launching his own career as an artist in his late teens. “You’re not just painting in one color, but you’re mixing colors together that work,” reflects Mack. “I’ve tried to bring in all these elements from American music and fuse them together. It’s all blues, but not stuck in a box, though I really respect the musicians who play traditional blues. My trip’s just a bit different. I like to engage listeners when they put on my albums or watch my show, so that they’re never bored. We’re upbeat, up-tempo and very dynamic!”
Diverse sounds heat up Mack’s latest release of original songs, Devil’s Secrets (#1 Canadian Blues CD of 2012 on Galaxie Satellite radio in Canada). From the rootsy, steel guitar-powered “Chicago Bound,” an unintentionally prophetic song that foretold Mack’s own big move to the city, to the zydeco two-step of “Come Back Baby” (with an accordion cameo by CJ Chenier), from rock tales (“Mid Life Crisis”) to raucous funk (the instrumental shout-out to The Meters, “Meet Her Funk”), to the horn-drenched soul of “Here’s To You,” Mack and his band don’t hesitate to bring other related roots genres back to the blues fold. “The whole thing we call blues is giant,” notes Mack. “It touches everything -- all of American music.”

B.B. KING TO LAUNCH LINE OF SIGNATURE WINES IN THE USA |
Blues legend B.B. King, in collaboration with Votto Vines Importing, is proud to release a new line of signature wines bearing his name across the United States. The Rock and Roll and Blues Hall of Famer has debuted the B.B. King Signature Collection. The Blues Festival Guide is partnering with the distributors to get the word out to blues fans throughout the U.S.
Exemplifying the grace and elegance of the blues, the B.B. King Signature Collection represents the tradition, quality and excellence of B.B. King and his music. At 87 years old, B.B. King has won over 15 Grammy awards, has performed in 88 countries and still frequently tours all over the world. With hundreds of performances throughout Europe under his belt, the emerging region of Spain was selected as the source for this signature collection. A fitting choice for the wines of one of the most-beloved musicians of all time, Spain was also the host of the original all-star “Guitar Legends” concert series, which in 1991 gathered and celebrated 27 of the world’s best guitarists, including B.B. King, over 5 days of completely sold out shows.
The B.B. King Signature Collection will be comprised of a red wine and a white wine for music fans and wine lovers alike. Both wines are sourced from the award winning Bodega Santa Cruz Winery, which has been producing wine for over 60 years and is located in the up-and-coming D.O. wine region of Almansa, Spain. B.B. King Signature Collection Red 2010 is a Crianza blend made from Garnacha, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and B.B. King Signature Collection White 2011 is comprised of 100% Verdejo grapes. Both wines are food friendly and meant to be enjoyed as everyday drinking wines.
The wines will first launch in Memphis and Nashville, and soon thereafter the B.B. King Signature Collection will be available through select national, regional, local and online outlets. The suggested retail price of the wines is $13.99.
