Greetings from your Editor...
|
|
|
We just returned from the Sin City Soul & Blues Revival in Las Vegas, NV where we were immersed in a huge batch of blues and roots and friends from far and wide. The camaraderie onstage and off was such a treat. It was uplifting to see so many familiar faces of friends we've met on the cruise and various festivals over the years, many whom might even be reading here! Great to see Amanda Gresham and Barbara Gresham-Hammerman of DME and their wonderful staff (and lineup); Michael Frank (Earwig Records and Honeyboy Edwards Fund); Jack Sullivan and Art Tipadli of Blues Music Magazine; Roger Naber and Geoff Alexander from the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise; Matt Marshall of American Blues Scene; Bob Corritore (Rhythm Room) and more not to mention countless musicians.
It was also fun (for me anyway) to run into so many blues fans from the Omaha area! Omaha used to be the base for Terry O'Halloran, the producer of the festival and boy does he have some loyal followers himself!
I met our BFG Facebook "Sin City" prize winner, John Shearer in the lobby. Surprise... he's from Omaha. We visited for a few about some of the highlights and also all the cool places to perform at in the Omaha area... thanks John, hope to tour there someday soon! :]
Too many names to mention here but the rewards of all those smiling faces, arm wavers and butt shakers at this festival was a'plenty.
Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

Blues and folk master Guy Davis has signed with M.C. Records to release his new recording Juba Dance which debuted in North America on September 10. The recording features Fabrizzio Poggi on harmonica and The Blind Boys of Alabama as special guests.
Weaving through the rhythms and musical narrations of this 13-track, stripped down acoustic recording are the American storytelling traditions that Guy Davis has pulled from since he came on the scene in 1978. Original Davis compositions played alongside choice covers of iconic pre-war blues figures Blind Lemon Jefferson, Rev. Robert Wilkins, and Blind Willie McTell provide a seamless musical hand-off that is as familiar and undulating as their source in the southern countryside.
What in lesser hands could have descended into easy sentimentalism instead comes together under Davis' passionate musicianship into an original and soaring sonic journey. Juba Dance has feet planted in worlds both old and new; in blues, folk, and our country's singular, rich African American musical heritage, and it impresses with every step how vital to our understanding of American life these authentic musical forms still are today.

Book inspired by author finding and returning B.B. King's stolen guitar
|
BND.com - CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. — For many people, finding a sought-after item in a pawnshop is something that seldom, if ever, happens. But in 2009, when Fruitland, MO native Eric Dahl found an electric guitar in a Las Vegas pawnshop that had been stolen from blues legend B.B. King, it led to a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with his idol and the publishing of his book, "B.B. King's Lucille And The Loves Before Her," which chronicles the guitars King has played throughout his storied career.

Sin City Soul & Blues Fest proved decadent indeed
|
The highlights of the Sin City Soul & Blues Fest are many and of course subjective but I tell you, the overall level of talent there was to be commended. The staff did a tremendous job in pulling this festival off despite some unforeseen obstacles for them on the way. There were multiple stages in various parts of The Riviera Hotel/Casino including the pool stage, the huge main pavilion stage, the casino center stage and the top floor Delta Music Experience (DME) stage. All were teeming with stellar talent and some had impromptu special guests. The Casino Center Stage also played host to late-night pro-jams that not only featured combinations of the artists appearing at the festival but also artist attending the festival that were lucky enough to make it onstage to share their talents. too! We thank Terry O'Halloran and his fine crew including countless volunteers for pulling off a great event. We're rooting for a 2nd annual! Like John Nemeth says, "Terry O'Halloran rules!"
This great photo here of John Nemeth was captured by Mary Ann Haskell. We will be posting a photo album of our combined photos on our website and Facebook.

The days before the Blues Festival in Colne
|
BURNLEY EXPRESS - The 24th Rhythm and Blues Festival was held here, in our ancient market town of bonnie Colne, just a few weeks ago.
Founded by “Mr Cool” Gary Hood in 1990 and organised now by “Miss Smooth” Alison Goode, once again big names are heading here, including one of my heroes, the 76-year-old Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings.
But, wait, today’s annual event could have had much earlier origins, for back in the spring of 1956 our local svengali Lew Askew mooted the idea of a summer “music jamboree” being held in the town. Read more here
