Greetings from your Editor...

Nighttime is the right time...
|
I don't know about you, but the time change always throws me off some. I realize not everyone around the globe observes Daylight Savings Time (DST) or the reverse of that, which is Standard Time (ST) when we"Fall" back. But as of this week, in my corner of the earth, it's back to ST. It now gets darker sooner which makes me think I didn't get enough done... however, then it feels like my nighttime is extended. I guess this is okay since I'm a night-owl but I do feel like I have to get up earlier now. Not so crazy about that option.
"We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long." (Willie Dixon/Koko Taylor). "Big star fallin,' mama... t'aint long before the break of day. Maybe this sunshine will chase my blues away." (Blind Willie McTell)
By the way, speaking of a wang dang doodle... a special Happy Birthday shout-out from the girls at BFG to our friend Mr. Bobby Rush, one of last remaining blues stalwarts and entertainer extraordinaire.
Next Monday, November 11th is Veterans's Day, a day that honors all members of the US Armed Forces who have served valiantly. Please pay your respects. Lest we forget.
Blues Birthdays of Note this week: Nov 8 Bonnie Bramlett (1944); Bonnie Raitt (1949); Nov 9 Linda Hopkins (1925); Nov 10 Bobby Rush (1934 per Bobby himself), George "Mojo" Buford (1929); Nov 11 LaVern Baker (1929), Mose Allison (1927), Chris Smither (1944); Nov 12 Bukka White (1906), Booker T. Jones (1944); Nov 13 Louisa "Blue Lu" Barker (1913), John Hammond, Jr. (1942), Nov 14 Carey Bell (1936), Anson Funderburgh (1954); Nov 15 Little Willie John (1937).
Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

Chris James & Patrick Rynn :: BARRELHOUSE STOMP
|
|
Barrelhouse Stomp, Chris James and Patrick Rynn’s third album for the Earwig label, is firmly rooted in traditional Chicago Blues, yet the San Diego-based duo continues to evolve and take chances in the studio, as this collection attests in eloquent fashion. This is tough, real-deal electric Blues to party to... dance to.. sit down and savor.
You’ll never find a blues guitarist who appreciates the integral role of piano in the idiom more than Chris; every hard-hitting selection on Barrelhouse Stomp boasts rock-solid ivories accompaniment. Read all about it here

Blues? At the Beach? In November? Yes. Yes. And Yes!
|
Attendees at the November 2, 2013 Blues At The Beach Festival were treated to a sensational day of musical performances in a picturesque state park environment, on a sun-soaked Saturday in Ventura, California.
Rumor has it that musicians have two venues on their itinerary these days... Austin, Texas and Ventura, California. This fits well into the master planning of Ross Emery of Roadshow Revival and Kat Merrick of Totally Local VC, who foresee growing this one-day event into a premier two-day spectacle in the coming years. Kat told me their vision is that Blues at the Beach will become a fall season, Doheny-like event for blues fans to soak up the San Buenaventura State Beach experience.
