Movies that score with blues...
|
Do you have a favorite "blues" movie that features great blues music? This weekend are the 2014 Oscars and thanks to our friends at Elwood's BluesMobile, they've reminded me of how special it is to not only find blues music in a movie score but also how many movies have been based on the blues genre itself. This year, one of the movies up for Best Picture, 12 Years a Slave, features blues, no doubt. Over the years there's been movies such as Lady Sings The Blues, Crossroads, Roadhouse, Leadbelly, The Commitments, Mo' Better Blues, Cadillac Records, Richard Johnston: Hill Country Troubadour, Honeydripper, Black Snake Moan, Martin Scorsese's amazing series, The Blues and more. What are your fave musical movie moments?
Speaking of awards... February 28 is the last day to vote for your favorite Blues Music Award nominee. See Blues Foundation News this issue for details.
Birthdays of Note: Mar 2 Alvin “Youngblood” Hart (1963), Rory Gallagher (1948), Mar 3 John Primer (1945), Mar 4 Bobby Womack (1944), Willie Johnson (1923), Mar 5 J.B. Lenoir (1929), Peg Leg Howell (1888), Tommy Tucker (1933), Mar 6 Walter "Furry" Lewis (1893), Walter Trout (1951).

Eric Jerardi :: EVERYBODY'S WAITING
|
|
Everybody's Waiting marks a milestone, seventh national release for Eric Jerardi. Produced and recorded by Grammy award winner, David Z (Prince, Fine Young Cannibals, Johnny Lang, Etta James) who said it best: "I've watched Eric grow over the years to be a serious contender who has truly established himself.” The Eric Jerardi Band along with Budweiser launched a five-city CD release party in Ohio (Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland) to kick off the new CD, with a new video premiering as well.
The band will continue touring the rest of 2014 across the United States and is looking for a european tour to jump on. Everybody's Waiting has several bonafide hits and any lover of blues/rock will enjoy it. The band has produced an excellent blend of music and lyrics that have exceeded all expectations.

Billy Branch & Sons of The Blues :: BLUES SHOCK
|
Blues Shock represents the first studio-recorded release in nearly fifteen years from veterans Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues, and their first for Blind Pig.
The result is a fascinating mix of daring, and full-bodied new compositions and fresh-sounding standards that followers have long savored at their live shows.
Speaking of ‘blues shocks,’ it hardly seems possible that Billy Branch—once touted as one of the ‘new generation’ of blues musicians—is verging on elder statesman status in the blues community.
Over a career spanning close to forty years now, Branch has become one of the blues’ most eloquent spokespersons and an ardent evangelist and teacher of the blues, not to mention an award-winning veteran artist on the Chicago, national and international music scenes. Read all about it here...

Music and Film Mix Tells History of Blues Women
|
Gisborne Herald - American filmmaker Jean Antolini is known for her contemporary approach to creating visual stories — her most recent documentary, My Pocket Pal, explores her on-line relationship with a fellow Instagram user. However, for her project, Mama's Got The Blues, with musician Ruth Wyand, Antolini looked back in time to the seedy streets of Storyville, the red-light district of New Orleans which, in the 20 years until 1917, was home to madams and their brothels, musicians and their jazz and blues.
