Blues Festival Guide
Mar 20, 2014
Vol 9/Issue 12
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Blues Springs Eternal...

Here comes Spring... the time of renewal hope, rebirth and discoveries. More and more festivals are springing up (yes, pun intended) on the calender. It's glorious I tell ya!
This (early) morn, myself and a keyboardist started a six week stint at the beautiful Flowers Fields in Carlsbad, California doing an interactive blues music presentation for K-2 graders! The acres of Fields are in bloom and this location is just incredible. Spring is busting out for sure. I call the kids my little seedlings and we introduce some shuffle, swing, Bo Diddley-type and boogie beats to songs about flowers blooming,"Lost Shoe Blues" and how dirt made their lunch!
Lots of Spring birthdays to wrap this week and next. Keeping with the theme of Women's History Month, along with Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marcia Ball and Gaye Adegbalola, I see we have two power-house, soul divas to celebrate, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin, plus jazz/blues queen, Sarah Vaughan.
"Yesterday this time I sang a love song but today I'm singing the blues."
Let's go smell the roses!
Birthdays of Note: Mar 20 Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973), Marcia Ball (1949), Sam Lay (1935), Eddie Shaw (1937), Jimmie Vaughan (1951); Mar 21 Eddie "Son" House (1902-1988), Otis Spann (1930-1970), William Clarke (1951-1996), Gaye Adegbalola (1944); Mar 23 Iverson "Louisiana Red" Minter (1936), Chaka Khan (1953); Mar 25 Aretha Franklin (1942); Mar 26 Rufus Thomas (1917); Mar 27 Leroy Carr (1905), Robert "Junior" Lockwood (1915), Sarah Vaughan (1924), Little Junior Parker (1932), Johnny Clyde Copeland (1937)

Joanne Shaw Taylor :: SONGS FROM THE ROAD
One night. One shot. No safety net. If there was pressure afoot as Joanne Shaw Taylor walked onstage at The Borderline on May 12th, 2013, then the bandleader used it as rocket-fuel, channeling the vibe into the set of her life. Now, six months later, that explosive performance is captured on Songs From The Road: a live album with the soul power to jostle the greats off the podium. “I’m really pleased with it,” says Joanne. “It’s everything I wanted it to be.”

ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND
The 25th Annual Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 24th & 25th, 2014.
The Blues Stage will feature some of the most talented and renowned Blues & Roots acts in the world both Saturday and Sunday.

The band followed with three studio recordings over the next eight years which, together with tireless touring and unforgettable performances at such festivals as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, won them an expanding and passionate fan base. America’s Blues Brews & BBQ series
A Chicago film production company believes it has an incredible idea for a blues themed television series. James Dill, Executive Producer and CEO of 24 Seven Concepts, who is also known as Jimmy Warren, host of America’s Blues Radio and a blues artist himself, came up with the concept of the show, “America’s Blues Brews & BBQ.” With Warren as host, the show will take viewers from coast to coast to some of the most iconic blues venues in the country, combining travel, food and the blues into one unforgettable experience. This project aims to not only introduce but to help preserve the blues along with these iconic people and places for generations to come. Read cool story here

Home on The Highway with Bart Drolenga (Part II)
Cotton Photo by Bart Drolenga

Photographer, blogger and traveler, Bart Drolenga and his wife Saskia are from Amsterdam, but travel the world looking for inspiration. Bart has agreed to take us along on their journey throught the Delta via writings and photos. This week is our 2nd stop....
"The stretch we are driving runs through the Delta where cotton fields abound as far as the eye can see. Many of the greats of the blues lived here in the vicinity of the highway and worked as sharecroppers on one of the plantations. Their ancestors [were] brought from Africa and kept as slaves."
Continue on the journey in next week's issue.
