Blues Festival Guide
April 24, 2014
Vol 9/Issue 17
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Blues... telling the stories of life

We've wrapped our 12th annual Blues Festival Guide magazine and are very proud of our pre-teen, which will be shipping soon! We are also proud to have the Jackson Rhythm & Blues Festival as this years' sponsor. After a roaring debut in 2013, the Jackson Rhythm & Blues Festival is back Aug 15-16 for their 2nd year with a packed lineup of over 30 acts. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Blues Musicians Benevolent Fund via the Mississippi Blues Commission.

We want to congratulate and thank our 2014 cover photographer, Marilyn Stringer, for her terrific photo of Mike Zito trading licks with his special guest, Samantha Fish, at the 11th annual Blues From The Top Festival in Winter Park, Colorado, 2013. The photo captures the essence of one of those killer, jamming moments that ends up as the highlight for many a festival-goer. This festival is produced by the Grand County Blues Society.

April 27 is "National Story Telling Day" in the U.S. (Scotland and England's is October 27). This day celebrates story-telling of all kinds. Of course no one can deny that blues has told a distinct story that has chronicled the life and times of countless "human" situations. Like Charlie Musselwhite once said, "The Blues reminds us that we are human." Pass on a story, write a story, sing a story... share!

Birthdays of the following week's storytellers: April 25 Albert King (1923), April 26 - Gertrude "Ma" Rainey (1886), Johnny Shines (1915), J.B. Hutto (1926), April 27 Ann Peebles (1947), April 29 Big Jay McNeely (1927), Otis Rush (1934), Frankie Lee (1941), April 30 - Rev. Gary Davis (1896), Mabel Scott (1915), Frankie Lee Sims (1917), Jimmy Lee Robinson (1931), May 1 Big Maybelle Smith (1924), Little Walter Jacobs (1930).

CD & DVD Releases
Joe Louis Walker :: HORNET'S NEST
On his dynamic new CD, Hornet’s Nest, Walker’s music is equal parts rock ‘n’ roll fire and blistering, passionate blues. The New York Times raves, “Walker is a singer with a Cadillac of a voice. He delivers no-nonsense, gutsy blues. His guitar solos are fast, wiry and incisive, moaning with bluesy despair.” Rolling Stone simply calls him “ferocious.” Hornet’s Nest was recorded in Nashville and produced by songwriter, drummer Tom Hambridge (producer of James Cotton’s Grammy-nominated Cotton Mouth Man, Buddy Guy’s Grammy-winning CDs Skin Deep and Living Proof, as well as albums for Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood and Walker’s previous CD, Hellfire). Hornet’s Nest—featuring 12 songs, including nine new originals... Read all about it here

The Bluesmasters :: VOLUME THREE
Under the enlightened guidance of blues guitar slinger, producer and session cat extraordinaire Tim Tucker, the Bluesmasters have evolved into a powerhouse band gaining momentum with each release. Initially a vehicle to feature former rock star singer Mickey Thomas as he proved to be a bona fide blues singer, the new release is a showcase for Tucker to strut his stuff, as well as for the devastating blues singer Hazel Miller. Tucker knows his blues from the inside out, having personally known both the late Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin, along with other legends of the genre, and his playing exudes the three “Ts” of great blues guitar: taste, tone and technique. Read more here...

Stiff-Finger Guitar Slide Holder
What is a Stiff-Finger? It’s a guitar slide holder. And no one knows what a guitar slide is better than the millions of blues players around the world. This patent pending (possibly a patent by the time you read this) guitar slide holder is changing the way slides are used in Live Blues Performances! The key to the holder is that it allows you to easily access and store your slide during a song. Typically a song played with a slide mandates you wear the slide through the whole song- unless you’re fortunate enough to have a guitar tech to toss it to, but good luck catching it when he tosses it back. More info and photos here

This last week the 15th Annual Bare Bones International Independent Film, Arts & Music Festival program proclaimed: Honorees - Music Legend 2014 - Selby Minner - Blueswoman, Artist & Founder Of The OK Blues Hall Of Fame.
