Greetings from your Editor...
Are you kidding? July is almost over? I guess the time does fly when you're having fun. Actually, I'd like to hear what kind of fun you are having. Demographics generally determine what events we attend and I know some of you are die-hards that never miss your favorite regional festival. That's terrific as your continuing attendance and loyalty helps keep them in existence. Some of you may even save your dough, put work on hold and head out on the road to experience various festivals... like deadheads of the blues. We are always interested in hearing your stories about memorable festival encounters.
August is slamming with festivals. Many festivals are produced by regional blues societies. If you're not a member of your local blues society please seek one out. Every little bit helps to keep what we love in motion so step up and don't you lie to me now.
We can't list every single festival in the weekly e-Guide since there are so many (and that's a good thing) so remember, if you don't see a particular festival here, check our website. We encourage promoters to post, so in the event you don't find what you're looking for on our website, please contact the promoter or post for them if you're so inclined. Being proactive helps all of our blues brothers and sisters.
Birthdays of note: July 26 Popsy Dixon (1942), Mick Jagger (1943); July 28 Roy Rogers (1950), Mike Bloomfield (1943), Junior Kimbrough (1930), "Banjo" Ikey Robinson (1904); July 30 Buddy Guy (1936), Big Jack Johnson (1940), Otis Taylor (1948); July 31 Roy Milton (1907), Ahmet Ertegun (Atlantic Records founder) (1923); Aug 1 Robert Cray (1953).
Your ever-grateful editor,

Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers :: EMERGENCY SITUATION
Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, have long been regarded as one of the best and most entertaining blues bands around. The release of Emergency Situation marks a reunion between Blind Pig Records and Rod - in 2004 Blind Pig released the CD Keepin' It Real and the following year the label put out a high-definition full length concert video entitled Big Blues Party.
Combining some smoking original tracks with obscure gems from R&B masters like Lee Dorsey, Jimmie Rogers, James Wee Willie Wayne and Amos Milburn, Rod and the Flyers amply demonstrate on "Emergency Situation" why they have risen to their position in the top ranks of blues acts. Dixie Peach :: BLUES WITH FRIENDS
Dixie Peach has risen again playing Southern blues-rock on their latest release Blues With Friends. Based in Ohio, Dixie Peach was formed in 1972 by slide guitarist extraordinaire, singer and songwriter Ira Stanley with Steve Williams (keyboards), Mike “Roscoe” Rousculp (bass), Tony Paulus (guitar, keyboards) and Jerry Barnhart (drums), they released one album (out of print) before breaking up in 1975. Reforming in 1998 and releasing Butta in 2002, they jam out better than ever, their spicy-as-barbecue sound featuring the original members save for drummer Steve Benson.

Recessionary times have left many of Bay Area's blues festivals with a bad case of the blues but Aki Kumar makes the blues his calling
(San Jose Mercury News) - Recessionary times have left many of Bay Area's blues festivals with a bad case of the blues. The first to fall was the most painful, as 2009's economic meltdown forced Tom Mazzolini to close the world famous San Francisco Blues Festival. The financial collapse of the Monterey Blues Festival in 2012 was another body blow. And now comes word that Ted Gehrke is putting the Metro Fountain Blues Festival on hiatus for the first time since 1981, meaning that Northern California has lost three of its most visible and long-running blues showcases in just five years.
But just when blues fans are thinking it's time to drink muddy water and sleep in a hollow log, along comes this weekend's Redwood City PAL Blues, Arts and BBQ Festival. Launched eight years ago to raise funds for the Redwood City Police Activities League, the event has become one of the best blues events in the region by tapping an impressive cross section of Bay Area blues talent.
