I Literally Love the Blues....

It's almost International Literacy Day which celebrates and promotes literacy all over the world. There are so many back stories about blues that one can read, whether legend or true, that speak of the pure depth of life and how blues music is truly a savior. Years ago, when I first started reading about blues history, I discovered many words and phrases, slang and double entendres, that revealed a much clearer picture of life, love, grief, etc.; the raw, expressive and poignant language of the blues really resonated with me and my own situations. While reading and writing is second nature for most of us, it is unfortunate that some youngsters are still fairly illiterate. There are blues in the schools programs that encourage kids to write lyrics — blues lyrics — about life, as a way to have them express themselves while practicing the skills of writing.

 

The written word is a beautiful and expressive thing. Express yourself.

World's Best Blues & Beer Meet in Ventura:

Two-Day California Beer Festival is Back Sept. 14-21

(Ventura, CA) – All roads lead to Ventura as the world's best blues music and craft beer meet at the 6th Annual California Beer Festival, Mission Park, 185 E. Santa Clara St., Saturday, September 20 for the Craft Beer Heaven (12:30 pm -5 pm) and Sunday, September 21 for the Blues & BBQ Festival

(11 am-6 pm).

 

It’s Ventura County Beer Week, September 14-21, featuring nightly Craft beer-themed activities at selected venues throughout Ventura. The California Beer Festival is now a yearly post-Labor Day event that draws several thousand people during each of it's two distinctly different days - Saturday primarily for craft beer enthusiasts; Sunday for blues lovers of all ages permitted (children 12 and under, free).

Blues Go Pink to Benefit Uninsured Women

(Warrendale, PA) - On Sunday, September 21, 1–7pm at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille, (285 Northgate Dr.), Warrendale, Pennsylvania, women of the blues will come together in concert for a heartfelt cause. Proceeds from The Blues Go Pink event will benefit breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women in Western PA through Hot Pink Pittsburgh Adagio Health’s Signature Fundraiser.

~ New auction item: The BF has another autographed LP this month to auction: Bad Company's Run With The Pack signed by lead singer Paul Rodgers. Paul signed this album specifically to raise funds for The Blues Foundation. Paul is donating proceeds from his latest release The Royal Sessions to the Stax Music Academy so in keeping with his generosity, we will assign all proceeds from this albums to our own Generation Blues youth music scholarship program. The great soul singer John Nemeth caught the blues bug in Boise, Idaho. He moved to Oakland, California to hone his skills. And now he has settled in Memphis, Tennessee. Nemeth hooked up with the Bo Keys, the premiere horn section for Memphis soul, on a new release called Memphis Grease.
