Music as a potent chill pill...
|
The days are getting cooler across the US but a "chill pill" could come in handy at anytime. Last week I pointed out that it was "Sarcastic Month." I thought that was hilarious. But October is also "Domestic Violence Awareness Month." That is definitely nothing to joke about. It's an affliction that could certainly use a chill pill. Now I love the blues no doubt, but there are a few lyrics by both blues men and women that raise an eyebrow in this day and age.
Domestic abuse shaped the life's of 20s and 30s female blues artists like "Ma" Gertrude Rainey and Bessie Smith. We know that themes in their lyrics often included physical and mental abuse. The songs generally had a "forgiving" theme, a darkly cloaked remedy for ongoing abuse.
"I woke up this mornin’, my head as sore as a boil/ My man beat me last night with five feet of copper coil... He keeps my lip split, my eyes as black as jet, but the way he love me makes me soon forget.”
(“Sweet Rough Man" Ma Rainey)
"I'd rather my man would hit me, than to jump right up and quit me." ("Ain't Nobody's Business" Bessie Smith). But it is.
It's said Bessie Smith was one of the first female blues singers to address the domestic violence issue head on, using empowering lyrics and rough vocals to assert her position and power as a black woman. But she also sang songs of a wronged-woman-getting-revenge.
These may seem archaic, but in truth, domestic violance is just not expressed as much in today's music but it unfortunately still exists in our society. Hopefully music could be a potent "chill pill" when life throws a curve.
So, October 18 is "Sweetest Day"... in light of the theme here so far, spread the good word that Saturday is a day to dedicate to your sweetie! That's a sweet pill to swallow.
Upcoming Birthdays of note: Oct 16 Sugarpie DeSanto (1935), Big Joe Williams (1903), Oct 18 Chuck Berry (1926) and Jessie Mae Hemphill (1923); Oct 20 Jelly Roll Morton (1890), Bugs Henderson (1943) and Vasti Jackson (1959); Oct 21 Steve Cropper (1941), Elvin Bishop (1942), Michele Lundeen (BFG e-Editor); Oct 23 Rufus "Speckled Red" Perryman (1892), Boozoo Chavis (1930), Carol Fran (1933); Oct 24 Sonny Terry (1911), Willie Mabon (1925), Bill Wyman (1936); Jimmy Dawkins (1936).
