Greetings from your E-Editor...

Surrounded by the blues...
|
I'll never forget my first, what I called, Country blues performance and how it moved me. I was invited to see Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee play on a college campus in the San Jose, California area... it was around 1973-74. Yes, I'd heard some blues-based music on the radio during the mid-late 60s. I was into the Stones, Big Brother & Janis, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield, and more. I never saw those particular artists live nor thought or desired at the time to make a connection to their blues roots.
By the early to mid 70's I was living in the Santa Cruz Mountains listening to the eclectic, non-commercial station, KFAT, on a battery-powered radio (we had no electricity). KFAT (now known as KPIG) played a lot of varied artists that you didn't hear on commercial stations. They introduced some amazing artists to me including folk, Delta and Country blues.
I thought I'd check out Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, even though I wasn't familiar with them (they are technically considered Piedmont blues artists but I called it Country blues). As I stood listening and watching, I was smitten with their raw sound and appeal. It was there that I realized what had captured my deepest attention about the music I'd always loved.... yes, that blues root, that raw, pure, simple truth. My own blues Pandora's box had been opened. I would later become a performing artist myself, and an editor and promoter of the music that moves me and surrounds me... the blues.
There's nothing like seeing an artist live and even better yet, discovering a new-to-you artist's sound that will be embedded in you forever. Thank goodness for festivals that bring together a plethora of artists. I'm honored to be a part of the Blues Festival Guide team that is here to share and help introduce you to some of your own poignant "memory moments."
Upcoming Birthdays of note: Oct 23 Rufus "Speckled Red" Perryman (1892), Boozoo Chavis (1930), Carol Fran (1933); Oct 24 Sonny Terry (1911), Willie Mabon (1925), Bill Wyman (1936); Jimmy Dawkins (1936).
Your ever-grateful-editor,

Columbia's Blues Festival will skip 2014
|
COLUMBIA, SC — Columbia's Blues Festival, a fall tradition for 19 years, will take a hiatus in 2014.
Organizers say corporate sponsor dollars were tighter this year, and they had a tough time landing a suitable marquee act at a lower rate. Plus, many of the volunteers who put on the free festival at Martin Luther King Park each year needed a break, said Geoffrey Graves, who organized the event through Word of Mouth Productions.
“It’s a free festival (to those who attend), but it costs plenty to put it on,” Graves said. “We could have done it this year, but we would have had to pare down the expenses.”

Our sales director Cheryl O'Grady Yearnshaw and her blues lovin' husband Tom continue their journey through the Delta.
Oct 16 "Taking care of business in Clarksdale, MS" While walking downtown I came across Michael Frank, of the Earwig Music Company and Earnest "Guitar" Roy (pictured here L-R) on the streets in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Earnest was interviewing Michael. I thought it worked the other way around? It was good to see both of them.
Oct 17 Tony Davenport is the artist who painted our cover in 2012 and Cheryl was happy to run into him at the Paint The Burg Purple and Gold Festival in Vicksburg, Mississippi at his vendor booth.
