Greetings from your E-Editor...
Howlin' for ya baby

It's Halloween on Friday although some of you may have been celebrating since last weekend (okay, maybe your entire life, but that's different). Most everyone loves an excuse to throw a wang, dang, doodle-themed gig and some of us can hardly wait to don a disguise, usually an alter-ego. My mom made me dress up as a carrot one year! A hand-me-down carrot no less! For cryin' outloud, what was she thinking? I mean, we may not have had money for a costume that year but I would have rather donned a large paper bag and went as a sack lunch!

I bet we can all recall some crazy get-ups and times over the years. Spooky, mysterious and fun music has also been a part of Halloween festivities. It's a time to conjure up magic potions ... maybe mojos and goofer dust... "I believe my good gal has found my black cat bone. I can leave Sunday morning. Monday morning I'm sitting back at home." (Blind Lemon Jefferson "Broke and Hungry Blues"). "I ain't superstitious, but a black cat just crossed my path." (I Ain't Superstitious" Willie Dixon). Was Willie still thinking about that poor cat when he wrote, "I got a black cat bone, I got a mojo too. I got a John The Conqueror, I'm gonna mess with you." (I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man"). Whatever you do this Halloween, I hope it's fun and full of the good kind of howlin' at midnight!

Upcoming Birthdays of note: Oct 30 Bob Koester (1932 Delmark's Founder); Oct 31 Julia Lee (1902), Ethel Waters (1896); Nov 1 Sippie Wallace (1898); Don Robey (Duke/Peacock Records 1903); Nov 2 Mark Wenner (1948); Nov 3 Mable John (1930); Sonny Rhodes (1940); Nov 4 Delbert McClinton (1940); Nov 5 Ike Turner (1931), Studebaker John Grimaldi (1952); Nov 6 Rory Block (1949); Nov 8 Bonnie Bramlett (1944); Bonnie Raitt (1949), Eddie “Vann” Shaw Jr. (1955); Nov 9 Linda Hopkins (1925), Susan Tedeschi (1970)

Generation Blues Experience :: PRIVATE ANGEL
The phenomenon of exceedingly young blues guitarists has reached its logical conclusion. The Generation Blues Experience was co-founded by dedicated 12-year old singer and guitar virtuoso Ray Goren in 2012 in South Central L.A. together with veteran blues septuagenarian, Sammy Lee, and octogenarian, Jamie Powell. A true product of his “generation,” Goren learned from YouTube videos of the legends and was playing blues guitar in gigs before the age of 10. But together with Powell and Lee the band busted age and musical barriers, resulting in a landmark recording of blues power.

JP Soars :: FULL MOON IN MEMPHIS
The release of JP Soars’ third solo CD, Full Moon Night In Memphis, promises to best illustrate his broad range of styles and tastes. Beginning with the release of the critically acclaimed 2008 CD Back of My Mind, JP Soars has channeled uncommon influences into a signature sound. After winning the International Blues Competition and the Albert King award for most promising guitarist, Soars channeled the excitement into the 2011 release of More Bees With Honey. All three CD’s received airplay on XM Radio and More Bees With Honey was played regularly on Little Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage program. Read more details here...

The Bogalusa Blues and Heritage Festival Raises the Bar in short time
The Bogalusa Blues and Heritage Festival was born in 2012 after Mayor Charles Mizell, who was working to reclaim and enhance Cassidy Park as part of an overall transformation of the economically struggling city, added the component of culture to the purview of the city's Parks and Recreation Committee.

The park had already hosted several small music events, and the time was right for growth. Acting on a realization of the genre's deep local roots, Committee Member Malinda White assembled a team to create a premiere celebration of the Blues in Bogalusa, and Mizell quickly upgraded the main stage and vowed to help ensure success.

We left Mississippi and headed South to Louisiana and arrived in Bogalusa, LA to meet with Malinda White, Executive Chair and Marcelle Hanneman, Promotions Board Member for the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival. We were curious about this festival since it had only been around for a couple of years (since 2012) and we had heard many positive comments about this festival.

MEMPHIS, TN - (by Bob Mehr) Blues Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Jay Sieleman is leaving the Memphis-based organization.
The news was announced Tuesday afternoon [Oct 28] in a news release. Sieleman, who has been at the top of the influential blues music organization since 2003, plans to step down in September of 2015. He will leave as the longest-serving executive in the foundation’s four-decade history.

Sieleman helped usher in a new period of growth, visibility and profitability for the foundation during his tenure. Over the past decade, Sieleman has dramatically expanded the annual International Blues Challenge and Blues Music Awards, strengthened relations with various member chapters and societies throughout the U.S. and abroad, and has overseen the development of a permanent Blues Music Hall of Fame, which is slated to open downtown in May.
