Celebrate treasures while digging for roots...
|
With the holidays in full swing, I want to wish a Happy Hanukkah to those of you who are celebrating during this December 16-24. It's also exactly a week until Christmas day arrives on December 25. I do love Christmastime and see it as a season of renewal and hope. Kwanzaa, the celebration of family, community and culture, starts December 26 and ends January 1.
December 23 is "Roots Day," a day to celebrate your genealogy and heritage. I think we all have a sense and a need of belonging, that is ingrained in our being. You may discover a treasure while digging for your roots.
Here's a quote I'd like to share...
"I'm convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they're stones that don't matter. As long as you're breathing, it's never too late to do some good." - Maya Angelou
Upcoming Birthdays of note: Dec 18 Pee Wee Crayton (1914), Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (1917), Lonnie Brooks (1933), Peg Leg Sam (1911), Rod Piazza (1947); Dec 19 Professor Longhair (aka Henry Roeland Byrd) (1918); Dec 21 Peetie Wheatstraw (1902), Carla Thomas (1942); Dec 22 Lil Green (1919); Dec 23 Little Esther Phillips (1935); Dec 24 Lee Dorsey (1924); Dec 25 Joe Louis Walker (1949)
Good tidings to you & yours!
Your ever-grateful-editor,

Blues aficionado Tom Yearnshaw and Delta blues musician/folk artist Pat Thomas having fun at the Highway 61 Blues Museum in Leland, Mississippi.
Pat has been serenading visitors for years at the museum. He's the son of late bluesman and folk artist, James "Son" Thomas. Considered Leland’s ambassador of the blues in full partnership with this museum, Pat carries on his father's legacy.

Shane Dwight :: THIS HOUSE
|
|
Native Californian Shane Dwight relocated to Nashville in 2009 to further advance his musical career. Within six months of arriving on the scene he swiftly attained a solid reputation as a “guitar slinger” in his newly adopted hometown. Not one to completely abandon his roots, Dwight still chooses to divide his time between Nashville and his childhood ranch in Morgan Hill, California. Performing over 200 shows per year worldwide, Dwight has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music, including B.B. King, Etta James, Jimmie Vaughan, Taj Mahal, the Doobie Brothers, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys and Johnny Winter. Read more details here

Devon Allman :: RAGGED & DIRTY
|
For Ragged & Dirty, Devon Allman has left his Southern comfort zone, hired a crack Chicago band, and enlisted the producing and writing talents of Grammy winning producer Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, James Cotton, Joe Louis Walker).
“I’ve done all my records in the South,” says Allman, who is also member of the Royal Southern Brotherhood (RSB) band. “I decided it was time to go to the electric blues Mecca, tap into that vibe, and surround myself with cats who live and breathe it. Besides producing, Tom custom wrote some songs for this record that really aligned with my path.”
Though Hambridge wrote four tunes and Devon picked three to cover, it’s his original tunes that speak to his artistic journey. Read more details here...

Hurricane Ruth :: BORN ON THE RIVER
|
Hurricane Ruth’s sophomore album, Born On The River, is an eclectic group of 11 original songs, the title track of which together with several other songs were inspired by lead vocalist Ruth LaMaster’s hometown of Beardstown, Illinois, a small town on the Illinois River. Joining Ruth on the album and on stage are the powerhouse trio of David Lumsden (lead guitar), Gary Davis (bass guitar) and Jim Engel (drums). The album is produced by Andon T. Davis, an accomplished, producer, guitarist, and vocalist and a very dear friend of the band. Andon’s direction enabled the quartet to deliver an intense and heavy album that has the same high energy as a live Hurricane Ruth performance. Read more details here...

Paul Butterfield’s blend of blues, psychedelia on East-West sparked Hall of Fame nod
|
East-West stands as a cornerstone for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s just-announced induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
That arguably the first psychedelic might have come from a blues band was one thing. That arguably one of the most influential blues albums of all time might have come from a white guy, well, that was another.
That both things were wrapped up inside the Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s East-West, however, is undeniable — and, in the end, this 1966 triumph (recently given a badly needed remastering by Audio Fidelity) became a cornerstone for the group’s just-announced induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Big Surprise for San Diego, California's IBC entrants
SAN DIEGO, CA - Missy and Heine Andersen, winners of Blues Lovers United of San Diego's regional solo/duo blues challenge, already had their plane tickets to Memphis in hand and gigs lined up when they got a huge surprise. They foundout they would have to be disqualified from the January 2015 IBC competition in Memphis due to a conflict. Turns out that Missy Andersen was recently nominated by the Blues Foundation for Soul Blues Female Artist of The Year! The pair will still be performing some showcases in Memphis during IBC week. Maybe give Missy a congratulatory hug but she still might be numb!
