Mike Zito & The Wheel :: SONGS FROM THE ROAD
|
|
The natural habitat of the true musician is not the gleaming studio, a glitzy showbiz party or a five-star hotel. It’s the road. And if multiple Blues Music Award winner Mike Zito had a dollar for every mile of tarmac he’s burnt since his breakout in the early-’90s, they’d be piled up to his chin. “There’s just something in me,” considers the solo bandleader and Royal Southern Brotherhood co-founder (with Devon Allman and Cyril Neville), “It’s there in all musicians. You gotta love the road to be a part of this world. You’re right there, looking in people’s eyes, swapping stories, shaking hands…”
Zito’s Songs From The Road is a two-disc set from Ruf Records’ Award winning live series that captures Mike at full throttle on his adopted home-turf.

Peaches and Crime : DO BAD THINGS
|
The gang is back and their third release is just as full of musical diversity and theatricality as the last, if not more so! Peaches and Crime, known for their old timey and dramatic flourishes, have released Do Bad Things, yet another astounding album that takes you on a journey of sound and emotions with colorful characters, riveting stories and even comedy skits as a preface to their dark sense of humor that shines through every song, courtesy of lyricist Daniel Schwartz. His wife, Angela Schwartz transforms these sagas into many diverse musical escapades.
The impressive vocal prowess of Angie Diamond soars atop the musical anecdotes of lost love, tall tales and even crime and punishment.

Victoria musician celebrates five years since life-changing Christmas present
|
Justin McElroy/GlobalNews.ca
VICTORIA, CANADA - Michael Thompson strums his guitar and rasps out another song from his seemingly endless catalogue. “Sometimes you get the blues – and sometimes the blues be you,” he sings.
Thompson, who goes by the stage name Black Velvet, was homeless and busking on the streets of Victoria for over four years. Today he has a house, a resurrected music career and is now in Toronto for the holiday season, meeting his grandchildren for the first time.
And if you ask Thompson where the transition started, he’ll point to a simple CD he was given on Christmas day five years ago. “It was one of the best Christmas gifts I could ever receive,” he says. “I could house myself, I could eat better…that was the moment.”

A Listener's Guide to Blues Appreciation
|
By Marcus Singletary - Assembling a list of the five most essential blues albums is difficult, but this chronologically-themed compendium covers each era in the genre's history, with considerations including the album's authenticity, the artist's ability to transcend influences to create a new style, and the record's amount of subsequent influence. B.B. King once defined blues as a basic, American style that creates a great artist-listener intimacy, but much of this intimacy is lost if it remains hidden from view. Ultimately, blues albums must be sold in order for the style's rich, multicultural appeal to be revealed.
1920-1940 Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings (Sony) Robert Johnson is considered the 'Father of the Blues' today, but he only reached a sizable audience in the compact disc era, when all of his recordings were released in the form of this box set.
