CD & DVD Releases
Nathan James :: HEAR ME CALLING
:: NATURAL BORN WAY
Roots and Blues maestro Nathan James has chosen to showcase both sides of his talents with the simultaneous release of Hear me Calling an acoustic based outing featuring Nathan performing solo in his one man band set up; and Natural Born That Way, a full ensemble recording featuring his band the Rhythm Scratchers with special guests. Both are recorded, mixed and mastered by Nathan at his renowned Sacred Cat Studios, and released on his own Sacred Cat Recordings label. A unique theme is a couple original tunes that feature different versions on both records.

Fans of traditional acoustic blues will delight in Hear Me Calling, a mix of delta and country blues, ragtime, Piedmont, and gospel tunes.

Junior Wells :: SOUTHSIDE BLUES JAM
Delmark’s reissue of Southside Blues Jam features 7 new, previously unissued tracks, and a 16-page booklet with liner notes and many never-before-seen photos from Delmark’s Bob Koester. This recording features Junior Wells (vocals, harmonica) with Buddy Guy (guitar), Otis Spann (piano), Louis Myers (guitar), Earnest Johnson (bass) and Fred Belows (drums).

Delmark say’s, “We’ve tried to capture, on this album, what a listener would hear any Monday night at Theresa's Blues Bar (now defunct) at 48th and Indiana on Chicago's Southside. The blue Monday regulars, including Buddy Guy, are joined by the late Otis Spann, the greatest blues pianist of his generation, making his last studio appearance and to whom this album is respectfully dedicated by Junior, the musicians, and... the Delmark staff.”

Put Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise on your Bucket List
Hi Blues Friends;
This is Kaati, the publisher of the Blues Festival Guide. My friends and I just got back from the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. It was the #24th Western Caribbean Cruise and it was awesome!

The stand-out acts for me were Mr. Sipp (former IBC winner) and The Peterson Brothers (teenage brothers from Texas), although all the music was amazing.

We enjoyed Billy Branch, Bobby Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, Coco Montoya, Dwayne Dopsie, James Harman, Keb Mo, Tommy Castro, Danielle Nicole, Tasha Taylor, Samantha Fish, Keith Crossan, Lucky Peterson, Madeline Payroux, Matt Anderson, Poppy Chubby, Roomful of Blues, Shemekia Copeland, Tab Benoit, Taj Mahal Trio, Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, special guest Janiva Magness and so many more.

You can’t play the blues, you have to be the blues
IBC Recap & Photos by Tim Parsons

“Hi, I’m Little Steve-O and I am here with Bongo Joe. We’re checking in.”

The introduction would sound strange at most registration tables, but not this past week in Memphis, Tennessee. Around here, Coyote Bill, Blue Jay Slim and Honey B aren’t critters. They are people. Blues people.

More than 250 contestants in band and solo/duo categories represented blues societies from all across the globe at the Blues Foundation’s 31st International Blues Challenge. Each had aspirations of making it to the finals in which the top eight in each category performed in the cavernous and regal Orpheum Theatre up the hill on Beale Street.

The Blues Foundation Reports Successes in Memphis
MEMPHIS, TN - The Tas Cru Jam at the Rum Boogie Cafe during IBC week raised $1769 for Generation Blues youth scholarships.

The Great Canadian Polar Bear Blues Showcase at the Kooky Canuck restaurant on Thursday afternoon raised $626 for the HART Fund.

ChefJimi’ raised $720 for the HART Fund from on-street sales of his Cooking with HART recipe book.

The Silent Auction Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre was very successful. All but two items received bids and brought in more than $6500.

Thanks to all the donors and bidders. It will also mean a few less items to move when we depart our temporary digs and move back into 421 by March 1.
We also received a single donation in the amount of $10,000 for the Blues Hall of Fame, bringing that amount to $2.925 million!
