Acclaimed Blues artist Greg Nagy's third CD, Stranded, is a soulful exquisitely sung collection that’s easily the singer - songwriter – guitarist’s most mature and nuanced work to date. Stranded stands poised to become one of the years most celebrated releases.
Nagy’s star has been on the rise since his days in the successful Midwestern soul and blues band Root Doctor, whose Change Our Ways, was nominated in 2008 for a Blues Music Award for Best Soul Blues album. A year later saw the release of Nagy’s first solo album, Walk That Fine Thin Line, which found itself nominated the following year for a BMA Best New Artist Debut category.

Long lost soul man Ironing Board Sam ... Video of the Week
|
Long lost soul man Ironing Board Sam is the subject of our Video of The Week. The 25-minute documentary, Ironing Board Sam's Return, tells Sam's incredible story, from playing the TV show Soul Train in 1965 to Jimi Hendrix sitting in with his band around then; from playing Jazz Fest while submerged in a tank of water in 1979 to inventing the keytar (really). The Music Maker Relief Foundation found him and he moved to Hillsborough, NC. The former New Orleanian is returning to Jazz Fest this year. It's inspiring, touching, and full of incredible soul music from the '60s to today.

Reminders of Katrina and Resilience
|
NEW ORLEANS, LA - “This P Bass was with me for years and I had it cleaned up in Houston, still worked,” says Gary Edwards, owner and producer of Sound of New Orleans Records. “I gave it to the son of a guy that was very nice to me when we were there. His son is doing well in the biz, working for Red Bull shows, whatever they do. This picture is from 2005 I think, sometime after Katrina. Things were so damned confused then that I am not sure. [I] sent the picture to Fender. They used it in their magazine and sent me a new case and a nice bass amp. I gave that away to Carl Marshall,..."

Documenting the Blues in the Mississippi Delta
|
The urgent need to preserve a cornerstone of American culture led folklorists like John Lomax to travel the country documenting early blues recordings and writers like Amiri Baraka to publish “Blues People: Negro Music in White America.” Although Margo Cooper did not know it when she began more than 20 years ago, she has followed that tradition and produced a documentary project that archives the oral and visual histories of blues musicians, their families and communities in northern Mississippi and the Delta.
Her project, “Deep Inside the Blues,” includes B. B. King, Sam Carr, Bobby Rush, R. L. Burnside, Otha Turner and many others. It is, for her, a love letter to the people she befriended in the Deep South.

Given the show’s large stage and production areas, the Cook Convention Center can comfortably seat 1450 attendees at tables of ten. I might still give a call just in case something opens up or if there ends up being a waitlist, 901-527-2583.
