J.B. Hutto & His Hawks with Sunnyland Slim ::
HAWK SQUAT
|
|
"The raw-as-an-open-wound Chicago slide guitarist J.B. Hutto outdid himself throughout an outrageously raucous album anchored by an impossible-to-ignore 'Hip Shakin,' the blaring title cut, and savage renditions of '20% Alcohol' and 'Notoriety Woman'." - Bill Dahl, allmusic.com.
The rough and rowdy blues heard at Turner's Lounge was the inspiration for this explosive 1968 recording. Blues legend Sunnyland Slim guests with The Hawks on piano and organ.
This Digipak Deluxe Edition of Hawk Squat contains the previously unissued song "I'll Cry Tomorrow," alternate takes of "Hawk Squat," "Too Much Pride," "Same Mistake Twice," two alternates of "Speak My Mind" and a 20-page booklet with many never-before-seen photos from the recording sessions and Turner's.

The dynamic dual slide guitarists Tom Gray and his “blues brother” Mark Johnson once again shatter perceptions of what the music is and what it can become. Their 10th album, Low Down, is another landmark for a band formed in the new millennium. Consisting of nine originals and three hip covers, it enervates the genre as a timeless, evolving cultural treasure. Gray (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, & harmonica) and Johnson are backed by Franher Joseph (bass) and Marlon Patton (drums) and backup singers Anna Kramer and Francine Reed.
The ominous “Wrong Side of Town” opens with a funky N’Awlins groove and Gray’s whiskey-cured voice. The dark, minor key “Afterglow” mines similar voodoo rhythms as Gray’s lyrics jab passionately with Johnson’s melancholy lead guitar speaking volumes.

Family to Honor Oakland Blues Pioneer Bob Geddins May 23
|
OAKLAND, CA - Even though blues pioneer Bob Geddins wrote and produced numerous national hit records between 1948 and 1961 – by such blues and R&B artists as Lowell Fulson, Sugar Pie DeSanto and Jimmy McCracklin, the Oakland resident received scant notice from Bay Area media following his death on February 16, 1991.
Today, more than 24 years later, Geddins remains a largely forgotten man, even to some members of his large extended family.
Irma Geddins, 55, the youngest of Geddins’ 14 children, hopes to raise awareness of her father’s accomplishments. She will pay homage to his legacy with an event on Saturday, May 23 at 2pm on the 7th Street sidewalk in front of the West Oakland BART station where a plaque was recently inlayed honoring Geddins in “The Music They Played on 7th Street Oakland” Walk of Fame Project.
