The Seat of the Student
Wonderfully, we humans are born with an explorer's heart, that ever seeks expansion and growth. As Alfred, Lord Tennyson painted hauntingly in his poem Ulysses about King Odysseus, gazing at the horizon and excited for learning 'til the very end,

"I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnished, not to shine in use!"

So we, too, are wired to seek new horizons. Whatever thrills your soul to learn - yes, it may well turn out to be useful in your skills repertoire - but more than that - simply the accelerated heartbeat you hear may be the very divine wind that your soul longs to hear and to swell to. How often do we follow simply that?

This season I am intrigued by what I am hungry to learn next. What draws your curious and enraptured mind? For me, ongoing yoga and AcroYoga with colleagues, and add to that harmonium with Miles, Yoga Tune-Up Anatomy with Taylor, Non-Violent Communication, Hay House lectures, varied & assorted workshops from Contact Improv to Waking Down, and I am curious what I am open to next. What about you?

What more privilege might we claim than the freedom we give ourselves to sail forth in our ever-exploring boat of discovery? Bon voyage ...

Free Will: NVC & Don Miguel Ruiz
Free Will: NVC & Don Miguel Ruiz
Freedom and Free Will are central concepts in every spiritual tradition. This spring I face that theme by setting an intentional goal for the rest of my life ~ to create a "voluntary world" around me in which to live and move.

The NVC term means: I only wish actions that are voluntary and willing from anyone I interact with, me included. That has many implications, the most obvious : I do not want to "make" anyone do what I would like them to do. No actions motivated by guilt, fear, duty, or pressure. From myself nor others.

Toltec author Don Miguel Ruiz describes this as shedding our lifelong "domestication" of receiving and giving conditional love that is based on what we do or do not do, on fear and guilt.

In our undomesticated "wild and free" state we receive and we give unconditional love. All our tools to find that state are worthwhile!

Yoga, biking, dancing, and connection are all places where I find a freedom of soul and body that approaches Don Miguel's "wild and free" state. As I bike through the freedom of spring in NYC, I am willing, like John Lennon, to "imagine" the freedom I want to create for everyone in my voluntary universe.
