Liz Mandeville, Mary Lane and Shirley Johnson with Johnny Drummer & The Starliters :: ANGELS SING THE BLUES
|
|
The angels in this live performance recorded in 2007 at Chicago’s Taste Entertainment Center are truly the voices you will hear when real angels sing the blues. Divas Shirley Johnson, Mary Lane and Liz Mandeville serve up a funky batch of uptempo and slow blues with an attitude, Chicago style.
Backed by keyboard player Johnny Drummer, known as a “storyteller under a groove,” and his soulful band The Starliters, these powerful blues women ease from rowdy and risque, to sweet and soulful and everything in between, — an ensemble of award winning all-stars who could teach the heavenly host what the real blues is all about. Johnny Drummer and his band also take vocal turns on five tracks. ... Find more details about this release

Julie Rhodes :: BOUND TO MEET THE DEVIL
|
Bound To Meet the Devil (February 26, 2016) marks the arrival of a powerhouse, new vocalist on the blues scene: Julie Rhodes. Just two years ago, she hadn’t yet graced the stage, though she was an ardent fan and working at an ice cream parlor. Yep Roc Records artist Jonah Tolchin heard her singing along to one of his songs in the audience; after the show, they talked and Tolchin was shocked to learn that Julie wasn’t (yet) an artist with the vocal talents that she possessed. Less than a year later, Tochin was co-producing and playing guitar on Bound To Meet the Devil.
Already, she’s earned a northeast fanbase, has performed at venues like NYC’s Baby’s All Right, and has played CMJ. Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz said, “Get ready to be amazed by Julie Rhodes.” ...Find more about this release

Saskatoon Blues in the Schools offers a Lesson in First Nations Indigenous Indian history
|
SASKATOON, SK, Canada – A Juno Award-winning blues musician is hoping his performances at Saskatoon schools introduce people to a rarely acknowledged aspect of music. Murray Porter is a Mohawk piano player from the Grand River Territory in southern Ontario.
He’s also one of the presenters of Blues in the Schools, a week-long program during the Saskatoon Blues Festival. The series uses music to educate students on topics like racism, classism and history. The Mississippi Delta is often considered the birthplace of the blues. The songs of slaves later inspired rock n’ roll and other forms of popular music.
“The natives and the African American people, we all have a shared stake in this,” Porter said. As black slaves escaped persecution via the Underground Railroad, they would often encounter Native Americans, and later, indigenous Canadians, according to Porter’s manager Elaine Bomberry, who is also First Nations. ...Find more about Saskatoon Blues

Cobbling junk together to make good music
|
GREYTOWN, NZ - Art and depression era blues music have combined in Greytown, with an exhibition of artisan guitars gracing the walls of the town's newest art space.
Musician and former producer Alan Galbraith is exhibiting a range of his cigarbox guitars at The Hub, an art gallery and photographic studio on High St, launched in December in Greytown, New Zealand. Galbraith makes the distinctive string instruments using a simple wooden box and various found objects from junk shops. Cigar box guitars had their origins in the American South during the Great Depression, with cash-strapped musicians cobbling together instruments from an empty cigar box, a broomstick and a few strings.

Jimmy Carter is the only remaining original member of the Blind Boys of Alabama. He has been singing with the Blind Boys of Alabama for seven decades and he's still going strong.
