Julie Rhodes :: BOUND TO MEET THE DEVIL
Bound To Meet the Devil (February 26, 2016) marks the arrival of a powerhouse, new vocalist on the blues scene: Julie Rhodes. Just two years ago, she hadn’t yet graced the stage, though she was an ardent fan and working at an ice cream parlor. Yep Roc Records artist Jonah Tolchin heard her singing along to one of his songs in the audience; after the show, they talked and Tolchin was shocked to learn that Julie wasn’t (yet) an artist with the vocal talents that she possessed. Less than a year later, Tochin was co-producing and playing guitar on Bound To Meet the Devil.

Already, she’s earned a northeast fanbase, has performed at venues like NYC’s Baby’s All Right, and has played CMJ. Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz said, “Get ready to be amazed by Julie Rhodes.” ...Find more about this release

Blues Foundation Announces 2016 Blues Hall Of Fame Inductees

MEMPHIS, TN -
On May 4, 2016 five legendary blues performers, two individuals who were instrumental in the creation of blues music, five single blues recordings, one blues album and an important piece of blues literature will be inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Elvin Bishop, Eddy Clearwater, Jimmy Johnson, John Mayall, and The Memphis Jug Band will each take their places beside performers who have been deemed by a group of blues scholars and industry veterans to be the Best in the Blues.

Each of these musicians has carved his place in blues history. Bishop's beg
innings with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to his more recent recognition for the 2015 Blues Music Awards "Song of the Year" have elevated him to the highest stature in blues music. Clearwater, Johnson, and Mayall each boast careers that have spanned more than a half century, and their talent has not waned as they each continue to produce music and to perform for devoted audiences, yet each are distinguishable by their stage presence and musical talent. The Memphis Jug Band's music crossed the racial divides of the first half of the twentieth century and inspired many musicians to follow in their footsteps. ...Find more info and bios about the inductees

Episode 5: Rick Holmstrom

Intro from Mako Funasaka:
Rick Holmstrom is probably best known for his work as the musical director for Mavis Staple's band. However, he spent many years playing with some of the finest west coast blues musicians (William Clarke, Johnny Dyer and Rod Piazza) before establishing a career of his own. His Hydraulic Groove album is a stunning example of how one can expand the language of the blues and his Cruel Sunrise album on MC Records is another example of his versatility as a guitarist. I sat down with Rick in August of 2015 at the Kitchener Blues Festival to talk about his life in music.
(Music: "Lord Please" by Rick Holmstrom. Special thanks to Andrew Galloway, the Kitchener Blues Festival and Mark Carpentieri of M.C. Records)
