Otis Clay's Last Song :: MISSISSIPPI POOR BOY
|
In 2014, Otis Clay and Johnny Rawls recorded their award-winning, critically acclaimed Soul Brothers album at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas. During the sessions, Otis recorded an a capella version of what he said was one of his favorite Gospel songs, “Mississippi Poor Boy,” more or less as a demo. It was a song the Canton Spirituals had recorded years ago. "We were going to record the song later for a solo album which never was made due to Clay’s untimely death in January of this year," says Bob Trenchard.
When Johnny Rawls, bassist Bob Trenchard and guitarist Johnny McGee were working on demos for an upcoming LTD album, it was decided to find the song on the Soul Brothers drive and try to finish it.

Intro from Mako Funasaka:
"Henry Butler is a legendary New Orleans musician, pianist and vocalist...but that really doesn't begin to tell the whole story. He is an artist, teacher, photographer and so much more. Henry works in many different musical genres and makes them all sound like Henry Butler. I first met Henry in Fredericton, New Brunswick at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival a number of years ago. Since then our paths have crossed a number of times including last November when he played Toronto with the Butler, Bernstein and the Hot 9 Band. This interview took place hours before his performance at Koerner Hall that night. (Music: "Leaving" by Steve Strongman. Special thanks to Henry Butler, Bruce Greenaway and Gary Vaughan)."
