Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers :: SPARE KEYS
|
|
Jimmy Thackery has made his career as a musician for over 40 years, traveling the globe from big festivals to everyone’s favorite neighborhood bars. A true professional musician, Jimmy gives his audience his best each and every performance, respecting and appreciating his fans along the way. His music reaches people’s lives in personal and profound ways, as witnessed by the touching messages he receives during and after each tour.
Spare Keys is an all-original album, with six instrumentals and six tunes with vocals. These songs use all the keys available on guitar, running the gamut from soulful blues in "Blues All Night," to heart-wrenching blues in "I Even Lost the Blues" and "You Can’t Come Back." His rock roots shine in "Puttin’ the Word Out" and "Fightin’ in the Jungle," which also features howler monkeys recorded at the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins in Belize.

Fans Prompt Ojai Bowlful of Blues Return Sept 17
|
(Ojai, CA) - On Saturday, September 17, after an 11-year hiatus, Ojai’s Bowlful of Blues will return to Libbey Bowl, in Ojai’s Libbey Park, Ojai, California, with performers scheduled from 3-9pm, including headliner, blues legend Arthur Adams, and featuring Mitch Kashmar, Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan, Calire-Marx Organ Quartet, and rising star Jade Hendrix. Gates open at 2pm with popular locals Richard Kaller and Annieville Blues on the lawn stage.
“Part of our reason for the return of the Bowlful of Blues after all these years is due to the fans,” says Michael Kaufer, Co-Founder/Producer of the festival in 1983, with the late Clarence Sterling. “Since the last concert in 2004 after Clarence’s death, people have continually stopped me on the streets asking for the concert’s return. Due to the event’s immense popularity, and the circumstances being right, the decision was made to reinstate the concert.

Slim Harpo Blues King Bee of Baton Rouge biography from LSU Press
|
(Baton Rouge, LA) - Slim Harpo finally gets a full biography thanks to a new release by music journalist Martin Hawkins. Slim Harpo: Blues King Bee of Baton Rouge, from LSU Press, delves into the history of this Baton Rouge performer whose work formed the foundation for the city's blues scene and was later covered by the Stones, Muddy Waters, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, Van Morrison and dozens more.
As Louis Armstrong forever tethered jazz to New Orleans and Clifton Chenier fixed Lafayette as home to zydeco, Slim Harpo established Baton Rouge as a base for the blues. In the only complete biography of this internationally renowned blues singer and musician, Hawkins traces Harpo’s rural upbringing near Louisiana’s capital, his professional development fostered by the local music scene, and his national success with R&B hits like “Rainin’ in My Heart,” “Baby Scratch My Back, and “I’m A King Bee,” among others. ...Read full article and see photos here

Janis: Little Girl Blue: Basking in the limelight of the blues
|
Hollywood loves its messed-up, tragic rock stars, and a biopic of hippie icon and “white blues” singer Janis Joplin has been in the works for longer than anyone can remember, with everyone from Pink to Amy Adams slated for the lead role.
That it never seems to come together is telling. The ending to Joplin’s arc — death by heroin overdose in 1970 at age 27 — provides no redemption, just stone-cold tragedy. Besides, the Joplin story has already been told well, albeit thinly fictionalized, by the movie that made Bette Midler a star — 1979’s The Rose.
In the absence of a biopic, American public broadcaster PBS offered up another Joplin documentary: Janis: Little Girl Blue, by director Amy J. Berg [now on Netflix]. While the doc is aimed squarely at PBS’ generous baby boomer audience — doing little to contextualize Joplin’s significance for a younger generation — ...Read full article and see photos here
