Michael Dawkins' Lovers Rock Reggae Single titled
"Baby I'm A Want You"
sat at the #1 position on the
USA Top 100 iTunes reggae chart
for 13 days and remained on the chart
for 3 weeks. The song is currently
#1 in Belgium on iTunes Top reggae chart.

JAMAICA STAR: "Mere hours after singer Michael Dawkins released his cover version of 'Baby I'm-A Want You', it went to #1 on the United States iTunes Reggae Chart.

The song, which was originally written by David Ashworth Gates in 1972, was released on August 31 and went to the top of the chart on September 1. Dawkins said that as soon as he finished recording the song, which is going into its second week at #1, he knew that he had a hit on his hands. However, he said that he did not expect it to reach to the top of the chart so quickly. "I was surprised at the time span which it took, but I knew it was a hit song. A female friend of mine told me it was going to be a number one song the first time she heard it," he told THE STAR

Dawkins said that he decided to do a cover version of the song, which was produced by Big Scope Records, because it has been a favourite of his since he was a kid. "I like the changes in the rhythm spectrum, that strum mix it has," he said. A mail processor clerk in the United States, Dawkins said that he does music after work or when he is on vacation. However, he said that he has been doing music professionally since he was 12 years old. "I used to sing and chat on a neighbour's sound system, then, I met producer Barry Clarke, who teach me how to write music," said 50-year-old Dawkins. Although he has been doing music for some time, his successes have been quite recent. "Actually I have an album, titled Sojourn, which was on the British Top 100 Reggae Chart at
# 5 a month ago," he said."

JAMAICA OBSERVER: "Michael Dawkins was an ardent radio listener in the early 1970s when he first heard Bread's monster ballad, "Baby I'm A Want You". It became one of his favourite songs and he longed to cover the blue-eyed soul classic. Dawkins finally recorded his reggae version this year for Big Scope Records, a company out of Queens, New York. Released in August, it is #1 on the United States iTunes Reggae Chart.

While the progression is similar to the original, Dawkins said he brought something different to the vocals. “The melody in the bridge is different from the original. Also, I do a little slur at the intro which is not in Bread's version,” he told the Jamaica ObserverDawkins recorded Baby I'm A Want You with seasoned New York session musicians, Kendoyle Simpson of Belize on drums,
and Jamaican guitarist Albert Smith.

Raised in Duhaney Park, Dawkins has been recording for over 30 years. He was previously known as Micky D and had a hit song in 1988 with "Don't Give Me No Crack".
In recent years, he has enjoyed success on regional reggae charts in the United States with covers of The Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "Rain From The Sky", made popular in Jamaica by Delroy Wilson. He insists he is not a cover artiste. “Covers are easier to promote 'cause people are more familiar with them. But I write a lot of songs…my album SOJOURN had 17 songs and 14 were originals,” he said. “When I give album to DJs they play the covers.
