The program will be held in the hospital’s community room, located at 31872 Coast Highway in Laguna Beach. Joining Dr. Steinmeyer in the presentation of this workshop is Anne Lee, MS, RD, Nutrition Therapist with the Eating Disorder Program at South Coast Medical Center. Together they will discuss how a negative body image can sabotage your happiness and health. Plus, they will share 10 steps to achieving a positive body image.  Reservations are necessary. Online Interactive Recovery Tools:

Using Self-Help Resources in Treatment: Research indicates that self-help resources, including books and computer-based programs, can be effective with a wide range of problems – including eating disorders and depression. Guided self-help, however, has shown to be more effective than unguided, suggesting that self-help works best when combined and integrated with ongoing treatment. In addition, research is beginning to suggest that computer-based self-help programs may be more effective in promoting therapeutic change than other forms of self-help. In this era of managed care, with the limitations imposed on treatment of mental health problems, healthcare professionals are increasingly looking for resources that can provide help between sessions.  Self-help Internet programs, such as the ones provided by MySelfHelp.com, can help to augment treatment and fill in some of the gaps caused when the number of sessions have been limited.  They can add value to treatment by:

·         Addressing myths and misconceptions about mental health problems and treatment

·         Promoting compliance with treatment recommendations

·         Facilitating self-monitoring and measurement of progress

·         Providing 24/7 access during symptomatic periods

·         Helping individuals change more complex patterns of thinking and behavior, as well as specific symptoms

·         Teaching relapse prevention strategies

·         Providing information to treating clinicians

·         Freeing clinician time, so that it does not have to be spent on repetitive tasks

MySelfHelp.com programs are “treatment friendly”, so that they can mesh smoothly with the clinician’s efforts.  A number of features have been incorporated in support of that goal, including:

·         Material geared to all levels of insight and readiness for change

·         Capability to print out materials so that they can be shared with one’s therapist

·         Frequent reminders to subscribers to share pertinent information with their therapists

·         Information on both psychotherapy and medication, socializing subscribers in treatment norms and expectations, and helping them to become educated consumers

·         Self-monitoring tools that enable subscribers and clinicians to track symptoms and evaluate progress

·         “Clinician Tip Sheets”, which help clinicians guide subscribers’ use of the program by identifying exercises that are relevant for addressing particular treatment goals

Online Binge Eating, Bulimia, and Depression Programs Support Treatment: MySelfHelp.com online, interactive self-help programs include Stop Binge Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating Depression, Overcoming Guilt, and Working on Low Self-Esteem. These programs include information, tools, and exercises that enable people to identify underlying issues and problems, overcome misconceptions, learn techniques to identify and manage triggers, and prevent relapses. The programs also include sections on nutrition, body image, psychotherapy, medication, and personal stories.  If you would like to take advantage of their free 30-day program preview for healthcare professionals, please send an email to info@myselfhelp.com and identify yourself as a healthcare professional. Healthcare professionals interesting in viewing MySelfHelp.com tip sheets should go to http://www.myselfhelp.com/About/providers.htm.

New York Treatment Center News - Psychotherapy for Males at CEDaR's Mount Kisco Center: The Center for Eating Disorder Recovery (CEDaR) of Westchester and Rockland Counties, New York, has launched an Eating Disorder Treatment program exclusively for male adolescents, over the age of 12, and adult men. Of those suffering with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa (including Exercise Bulimia) at least 10% are male. Often under-diagnosed or hidden, eating disorders among males remain untreated. Sports programs often ignore symptoms or see symptoms as part of “training.” In general, male sufferers are often more reluctant to seek help. CEDaR’s program for males is conducted by licensed mental health practitioners who specialize in the unique treatment of eating disorders. Both male and female therapists are on staff, and nutritional care, which is conducted by eating disorder nutritionists with additional training in sports nutrition, is also available.  Treatment will be offered for males with: Anorexia Nervosa; Bulimia Nervosa; Exercise Bulimia; Binge Eating Disorder; Body Image Issues (Body Dysmorphic Disorder). Compulsive Eating Groups for males are being formed at all CEDaR centers. Along with CEDaR’s Mt. Kisco, Scarsdale and Nyack offices, a forthcoming office in Mamaroneck will offer treatment for Eating Disorders for both males and females. Patients already receiving psychological services are welcome to participate in CEDaR groups and/or nutritional services. Anyone interested, should call 914-244-1904.
