for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders in
conjunction with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical
Center at Dallas. The
Symposium is on Friday, March 4, 2005 at the Southern Methodist

prevalence, secrecy, and devastation of eating disorders. This
year, The Elisa Project has expanded this idea into the
National Community Gathering™ which involves people hosting
their own gatherings all over the world in coffee shops, homes,
restaurants, and university campuses. Their plan is to have
over 250 sites gathering on March 3, 2005 to create a huge

Research
in Progress:
National
Institute of Mental Health
- International study seeks to determine whether a gene(s)
might predispose individuals to develop anorexia nervosa.
Investigators need families with at least two members who have
or had anorexia nervosa and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. For additional information
call 1-888-895-3886, email EdResearch@msx.upmc.edu
or visit http://www.angenetics.org.
Available
pharmacological treatments for anorexia nervosa - Currently,
no medications are approved by the FDA for the treatment of
anorexia nervosa (AN). However, there are several promising
pharmacological targets. Treatment includes a weight
restoration and a weight maintenance phase and different
pharmacological treatments may be useful in one phase, but not
the other. Although cyproheptadine has some modest benefit
during the weight restoration phase, it is not widely used.
Fluoxetine administered during the weight maintenance phase
decreases relapse rate. The medications currently being most
widely studied are the atypical antipsychotics, particularly
olanzapine. Emerging evidence suggests that some AN patients
have psychotic symptoms that may respond to antipsychotic
agents. There are promising case reports and open-label studies
of the atypical antipsychotics, but as yet, no randomised,
placebo-controlled, double-blind studies have been reported.
Additional novel treatment approaches are urgently needed for
this group of severely ill patients who have a high premature
mortality rate. Expert
Opin Pharmacother. 2004 Nov;5(11):2287-92
Resting
tachycardia, a warning sign in anorexia nervosa: case report - BACKGROUND:
Among psychiatric disorders, anorexia nervosa has the highest
mortality rate. Upon hospitalization, anorexia nervosa patients
are often markedly bradycardic (slow heartbeats), which may be
an adaptive response to progressive weight loss and negative
energy balance. When anorexia nervosa patients manifest
tachycardia (fast heartbeats), even heart rates in the 80-90
bpm range, a supervening acute illness should be suspected.
CONCLUSIONS: Bradycardia is a characteristic feature of anorexia nervosa particularly
with significant weight loss. When anorexia nervosa patients
present with nonspecific symptoms, resting tachycardia should
prompt a search for potentially life-threatening conditions.

Eating
Disorders Psychotherapists Needed for Clinical Practice Survey.
The Academy for Eating Disorders Psychodynamic Psychotherapy,
CBT, and Hispano Latino American Special Interest Groups are
collaborating on a clinical practice survey that investigates
the types of clinical interventions and approaches
psychotherapists are currently using in their treatment of
eating disorders. They hope to gain an understanding of what
clinicians from around the world are actually doing in their
clinical practice. If you are a psychotherapist who treats
eating disorders please take a few minutes to complete their
survey. To complete the survey online, go to www.aedweb.org

Programs Can Provide Extra Support During Holidays:
The holidays can be particularly difficult for people suffering
from eating disorders and depression, since they may encounter
many potential triggers for symptoms and episodes. This time of
year poses many special challenges for people who have
difficulty maintaining appropriate self-care. Shopping for
holiday gifts can be stressful and exhausting, as well as
financially draining. Most
holiday gatherings are centered around large amounts of food,
and there is a great deal of social pressure to eat and drink
to excess. Those who use restrictive eating to “prepare”
for these occasions may unwittingly set themselves up for
overeating. Family interactions and social situations, and the
issues they raise, can be a source of stress or discomfort. In
addition, for many of us, the holidays never seem to live up to
our expectations. All of these factors can contribute to binge
eating and purging, as well as anxiety and other negative
emotions.
Therapists
can help their clients through these difficult experiences by
anticipating potentially stressful scenarios, developing a plan
for dealing with those situations, and teaching the appropriate
coping skills. For example, some clients may benefit from
rehearsing how they will diplomatically but firmly resist
pressures to eat or drink to excess.
Similarly, those who are returning to dysfunctional
families of origin, particularly college students, may need to
develop a plan that enables them to limit their exposure to
“toxic” people and destructive interactions. In addition,
those who have lost a loved one or anticipate being alone
during the holidays need to think about how they will manage
their time and the painful feelings of loneliness they may
experience.
Since
therapists cannot always be available when a client’s
symptoms appear or worsen – especially during the holidays
– they can refer their clients to online self-help programs
that reinforce techniques taught during sessions.
The
MySelfHelp.com family of online, interactive self-help programs
is gaining widespread acceptance from therapists and other
healthcare professionals throughout the world because it fills
the gap by offer the following features:
Reinforcement
of Therapeutic Treatment Goals:
Therapists and clients can work together to select features of
the programs that complement the therapeutic plan and that will
be most useful during particular events and episodes. Clinician
Tip Sheets, available at http://www.myselfhelp.com/About/providers.htm
help therapists identify parts of the programs designed to help
achieve specific treatment goals.
24-Hour
Access: All programs,
including the moderated Discussion Board, are available 24
hours a day, so individuals can use parts of the program to
plan, practice, and reinforce coping skills prior to, after,
and even during stressful events. Relaxation and visualization
techniques, including downloadable audios, are particularly
useful during highly stressful incidents.
Comprehensive
Family of Programs: Including New Stress Management Program: The
MySelfHelp.com family of programs currently includes Defeating
Depression, Stop Binge Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Stress

Joyful
Affirmation Cards Encourage Girls and Women to Love Themselves:
So many girls and women have a hard time loving themselves and
their bodies—and understandably so in a culture that gives
them the message that they must live up to a narrowly defined
and unrealistic standard of beauty. Many girls and women
believe that in order to be loved, they must look like the
images presented in the media. They are given the message that
they should not accept themselves as they are. This leaves many
girls and women feeling insecure, depressed, self-hating, and
struggling with eating disorders and/or self-harm. There are
very few images and messages that reflect the true diversity of
women’s different sizes, shapes, races, and ages, and that
encourage women to love themselves and their bodies. Love
Yourself affirmation cards offer this support. The cards show
girls and women of many races, ages, and shapes and sizes and
offer messages that build self-esteem. They encourage the
reader to listen to themselves, to see their inner beauty, to
love and accept their bodies, and to depend on their own
strengths, as well as to reach out to others when they need to.
It’s time that
girls and women had positive messages and images about
themselves.
Love Yourself Affirmation Cards are available at http://www.CherylRainfield.com.

first-served basis.
We now have an opening for two banners on our high traffic www.edreferral.com/findingatherapist.htm

promote the service you provide.
Is
your profile still listed on EDReferral.com? Many people incorrectly assume that since they are
receiving this monthly newsletter, that their information must
be listed on the EDReferral.com web site. Your membership lasts
for one year and then it expires. Check here to make sure that
the thousands of clients who come to our site each day looking
for referrals can find you: http://www.edreferral.com/us_search.htm

Newsletter Protocol: Our
newsletter goes out to thousands of professionals and laymen
via email, mail and fax. Edreferral.com receives numerous
requests by professionals to have information included in the
newsletter. Unfortunately, we have limited space to include
information, thus here is the current protocol:
1. All information must be
submitted to edreferral@aol.com no later than the 20th of each
month. Inclusion in the newsletter will be based on a first
come - first serve basis.
2. Information is subject to
review and editing for space considerations.
3. If you are a member, send us
information on conferences, workshops, support groups and
projects and we will list this information on the website
for FREE as we have always done. We want to support your
work. If you are a member and you would like your event to also
be announced in the newsletter the charge is $75.00.
