LISTEN buttons are now available

Starting this week, you'll be able to listen to the artists whose CDs are being promoted and the House of Blues Radio Hour promo.

Just click on the LISTEN button and you'll hear an entire song from the CD. (You may need to over-ride your pop-up blocker by holding down the control key when you press Listen)

This week in the CD section we continue to feature some of our favorite artists from the IBC. Artists that many in attendance thought could easily have been picked the overall winner. The competition is that good, and that tight.

The timing of the LISTEN button is perfect because it's important for blues fans to hear just how good these artists really are.

Take a listen, and if you like what you hear, support the artists by purchasing their CD.

THE LARA PRICE BAND : : I Got News

This band competed against Mighty Lester at B.B. King's Blues Club at the IBC. And while they didn't win their venue, they impressed a lot of people and created a big buzz about their talent.

Lara Price is an All American singer with a sultry stage presence and a voice that demands you're attention-smoky, lonely, sexy, and powerful. It's no wonder her music transcends the blues and crosses a line into music that is unequivocally superb. "It’s all about the love of music and letting the crowd share in my passion."

And Laura Chavez the guitar player is quite impressive also. Based on the strength of her guitar leads, The Lara Price Band was featured on the Ruf Records international release "Blues Guitar Women" and was specifically mentioned as the "Hot Pick" on the CD by Guitar One Magazine.

ARE YOU THE NEXT "KING OF THE BLUES"

Guitar Center, the nation's leading music instrument retailer, announced “King of the Blues” '07 -- the world's largest guitar competition. Geared towards promoting players with deep passion and commitment to the craft, “King of the Blues” is an annual celebration of a genre that is the root of today's music.

“'King of the Blues' is more than a talent contest,” said Dustin Hinz, Manager of Event Marketing and Promotions for Guitar Center. “This is about finding someone who loves making music and helping him or her become a working artist. The Blues define today's music -- from Robert Johnson to The White Stripes and B.B. King to John Mayer, this genre forms the bulk of what people are listening to right now. By tapping into this rich and deep musical form, our goal is to find true original talent -- not clones of great guitarists, but rather great guitarists in their own right who deserve a place alongside the legends.”

This year's grand prize winner will receive: 7 days in the studio with Grammy Award winning producer and guitar aficionado Pete Anderson; 2007 Ford Mustang; Gibson '59 VOS re-issue Les Paul; 1-year Gibson endorsement deal; write-up in Guitar World magazine; Gibson GA40 Amplifier; Apple MacPro 2.66 GHz computer with 23-inch Cinema HD monitor; $2500 Levi's Shopping spree.

Esteemed musician Hubert Sumlin will be honored during this year's event through a set of interviews that will run exclusively on www.gckingoftheblues.com, and will also perform at the finals. Named one of Rolling Stone's “100 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time,” Sumlin developed a passion for the instrument at age six when he plucked one guitar string that his brother had crudely nailed to the wall of their home. Since then, Hubert has achieved iconic status as the guitarist for blues great Howlin' Wolf and has been acknowledged as a key influence by such guitar greats as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmy Page.

“Mr. Sumlin personifies what the “King of the Blues” is all about and we're delighted that he's participating,” said Dustin Hinz, Manager of Event Marketing and Promotions for Guitar Center, “We're looking for original talent, and Sumlin is an incredible example of just that.”
Blues greats, experts to discuss life of B.B. King

NO HAIGHT, BUT PLENTY TO LOVE ABOUT "JANIS" THEATER REVIEW

[reprinted from the Kansas City Star] Oh, what a strange feeling it is to sit in the spotless new seats of an immaculate new theater nestled in the gleaming new offices of a leading local corporation and watch a show about a self-destructive '60s rock icon.

Maybe this is all that's left of the '60s. We put on our jackets and ties, our pearls and high heels, and come to a safe, clean, drug-free environment to vicariously experience a decade remembered for its music, its ideals and its own unique brand of chaos.

Yes, the February 7th performance of 'Love, Janis,' the inaugural production in Kansas City Repertory Theatre's impressive new 320-seat playhouse, Copaken Stage, was in many ways a study in contrasts.

The show was preceded by a handful of speeches and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the lobby. Then some of the most generous arts supporters in town eagerly took their seats and in short order were blasted by music loud enough to rattle their sternums.
The show is an effective piece of theater that draws most of its power from the raucous music recorded by Janis Joplin during her blazing four-year career. This is a good-faith effort to capture the reality of Joplin -- the vulnerable human being dwelling behind the Southern Comfort-chugging public persona -- and to put her death by drug overdose in a humane context.

To accomplish this, the director employed an interesting device. Janis is portrayed by two performers -- one non-singing actress and a singer who can capture Joplin's throaty vocal quality.

Lena Kaminsky plays the 'acting' Janis with range, subtlety and conviction. Then we have the 'singing' Janis, who bowls us over repeatedly with her explosive vocal performances. On Wednesday the role was filled by the volatile Mary Bridget Davies (who, in the interest of protecting vocal cords, alternates in the part with Kacee Clanton).

The Kansas City Repertory Theatre production of 'Love, Janis' runs through March 18th.

Elmore Magazine is ideal for all readers from junior high school level to adult, and can help students relate to their teachers and vice versa.

A bill passed by the 100th U.S Congress and U.S. Senate to preserve American Music stated: "it is now in the best interest of the national welfare and all of our citizens to preserve and celebrate this unique art form," further citing, it is "a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support and resources to make certain it is preserved, understood and promulgated."

Boards of education and school officials are encouraged to contact Elmore Magazine with a formal request for their free subscriptions.

That may change this year. St. Joseph's Historic Foundation Inc., which runs the festival, is negotiating with the county to hold the event at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

The stadium, off Duke Street north of downtown next to Durham Regional Hospital, would be a larger venue than the old ballpark.

The two-day blues festival in early September typically draws between 15,000 and 20,000 music fans; this year, a Thursday night acoustic performance will be added to the usual Friday/Saturday slate.
