SIR LAWRENCE : : He's Back

This CD has something for everyone, young and old.Sir Lawrence has cooked up a Texas southern soul banquet on his Power Pack Entertainment CD, He's Back.

The young Lawrence D. Haynes began his musical journey with the stirring gospel music of his youth. Mix in the funk from Houston’s Kashmere High School band under the direction of Conrad Johnson. Now add the influence of great artists such as Tyrone Davis, Earth Wind & Fire and Maze and stir in 15 years of singing in front of Texas audiences. The result is a varied and tasty array of bluesy soul tunes. The sonic feast includes humor ("Cheating Is A Risky Business"),heartbreak ("It’s Over"), dancing ("Party Don’t Stop"),straight talk ("I’m An Old Dog") and the closing gospel tinged ("Keep Looking Up").

Sir Lawrence is enthusiastic about the album. He says that the songs “go in all directions and provide listening pleasure for both young and old alike.” Sir Lawrence declares that his goal is to have He’s Back “remembered for generations to come.”

B.B. KING RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTOR OF MUSIC DEGREE

Blues legend B.B. King received an honorary doctor of music degree Sunday, May 27th at Brown University’s commencement ceremony and then took the microphone to serenade the graduating class.

“I didn’t bring Lucille; she’s asleep today,” said King, referring to the name he’s given his guitars that made him famous.

“I would like to do something I’ve never done before,” he said.

“I’ve played in 90 different countries around the world, but I’ve never tried to do what I’m going to try to do for you …”

He then launched into an a cappella version of “Guess Who,” dedicating the song to the more than 2,000 graduating students who responded by giving King a standing ovation.

Buddy Holly's Widow, Lubbock Dispute Naming Rights

LUBBOCK, TX (AP) -- Don't plan on strolling down the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in his birthplace of Lubbock.

The Lubbock City Council had faced a dispute with the singer's widow over payment for use of the rock 'n' roll legend's name on two Buddy Holly-themed sites.

So the council has endorsed a plan to rename the sites by the group that oversees the places.

Maria Elena Holly sought a licensing agreement and name usage fees for the sites, which will now be known as the West Texas Walk of Fame and West Texas Terrace.

In a statement through CMG Worldwide, Holly has said she was always honored by Lubbock's efforts to remember her husband.

She said the current misunderstanding involved the failure of certain entities associated with the city in using Holly's name -- without first consulting her.

Buddy Holly died in a 1959 plane crash in Iowa.

Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock Performance Is Turned Into An Exhibit

Late rocker Jimi Hendrix's legendary performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock has been turned into an art exhibition in Gateshead, England. The guitarist played the U.S. national anthem as dawn broke over the last morning of the New York state festival in August 1969.

Now, the performance is being shown repeatedly across a 12 panel grid with each panel starting half a second after the last. Called Star-Spangled Banner Recurring, the exhibition by artist Graham Dolphin runs at the Baltic Center For Contemporary Art until June 28th.
Cheryl and Tom back on the Blue Highway

This time Cheryl O’Grady-Yearnshaw, BFG Representative and her husband, Tom, traveled to San Jose, CA for the Metro Fountain Blues Festival held on Mother’s Day weekend. They arrived a day early and caught multi-talented Ron Thompson backed by the Cindy Chen Band at the Poor House Bistro. Ron’s high energy blues heated up the place and he was joined by longtime San Jose area Blues harp legend Gary Smith. Ron is always a blast to watch on his own and the combination of these musicians together, along with some incredible Cajun food, was a great way to kick off the festival.

The following day the line-up at the Metro Fountain Blues Festival included the Laura Price Band, J.C. Smith Band, Jason Ricci, Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers, Sista Monica, & Buddy Guy. All the bands played solid sets, and the energy of the crowd seemed to build all day. Highlights included Laura Chavez (Laura Price Band) throwing down some incredible guitar licks, J.C Smith not only playing blues, but entertaining the crowd with his personality. Sista Monica with her rich and sassy voice captivated the audience as she belted out her set. By then, it was obvious it had been a great day for the Blues and now it was time for Buddy Guy.

Before Buddy Guy started his set Ramon Johnson, KSJS Director and organizer of the San Jose Blues Week and Ted Gehrke (festival promoter) and several City Council members presented Buddy with a plaque signed by Chuck Reed, Mayor of San Jose, for his contributions to the Blues. When Buddy started to play his guitar and sing he showed why he is known for his style of Chicago Blues and why he was being recognized. He put on an amazing show and it was obvious he was having fun trading licks with his bass player, Orlando Wright, and his rhythm guitarist, Ric Hall. Buddy came off stage and went out into the audience and the crowd went nuts and it seemed like everyone was rockin’. Whoa, what a day!

Thanks to the Metro Fountain Blues Festival for giving us a full day of memorable Blues in a comfortable setting on the San Jose State University Campus.

See ya on the Blues Highway.
