JIMMY THACKERY AND THE DRIVERS : : Solid Ice
Taking a break from the road introduces a new dimension to veteran guitarist Jimmy Thackery's songwriting and playing
For more than three decades, blues guitarist Jimmy Thackery has been a road warrior. In keeping with the rich blues tradition that spans nearly a century, this versatile guitar slinger has practically lived his life on the road, first as the co-founder and frontman for The Nighthawks in the ‘70s, and later with his current band, The Drivers (bassist Mark Bumgarner and drummer Mark Stutso)
But a recent six-month stretch of rare down time opened new creative channels for Thackery. Kicking back with a four-track recorder and sufficient time to conjure his muse at a more comfortable pace, he was able to plumb some of the lesser known depths of his creative well. The result is SOLID ICE, an 11-song set that provides a snapshot of Thackery on the road less traveled. Even the long-time Thackery fan is likely to find some aspects of the picture surprising.

Ray Charles Estate At Odds With Albany State Over $3 Million Gift
|
Six years after music legend Ray Charles donated $3 million to Albany State University to build a performing arts center in his name, his estate wants to know why $2 million of the donated money was used for scholarships.
At issue is whether that money was explicitly earmarked for the center, since no written instructions accompanied the $2 million gift, given to the historically black college in Charles' hometown after he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2002. Albany State maintains that while the school does plan to name the center after Charles, the money was an unrestricted gift to the college. Construction on the performing arts center, which was also to include a theater named for Charles' late mother, Reatha Robinson, has not yet begun.
Charles gave two gifts of money to Albany State: $1 million in 2001 and $2 million in 2002. "Mr. Charles always expressed, and the university always acknowledged, that Ray Charles was going to make a gift for the construction of the performing arts center and the theater in his late mother's name," said Ivan Hoffman, general counsel for Charles' estate.
The project will cost at least $23 million, said Albany State University spokeswoman Sophia Glover. The $3 million from Charles' estate is the only money contributed toward the center so far, she said.
Glover said it was always understood that the funds were unrestricted.
"It has always been clear that we would use (the money) for our most immediate need, and that would be scholarships for students to attend the university," Glover said. "In return for the gift, to show our appreciation for Ray Charles, we wanted to name the fine arts building for him."
In a letter dated June 22, 2006, to Charles' longtime manager, Joe Adams, Everette Freeman -- then the president of Albany State -- wrote that state Board of Regents did not recommend the project be forwarded to the Legislature for funding.
"Consequently, we likely will not see funds appropriate (sic) for the building until at least the fiscal year beginning in July 2008, if we are lucky," Freeman wrote.
The letter said the $1 million gift remains in a bank, and the $2 million was given to 125 students chosen to be Ray Charles Presidential Scholars, according to the university. The donation is the largest gift the university has ever received, officials said.
Architectural renderings of the building have been drawn, and a site has been selected on campus.
Charles was born on Sept. 23, 1930, in Albany. He died of acute liver disease on June 10, 2004, at the age of 73.
In 2001, Charles also gave two gifts of $1 million each to Morehouse College toward building the 40,000-square foot Ray Charles Performing Arts Center. Morehouse broke ground on the building in May 2007.
Last year, Charles' estate also donated his midnight blue tour bus to Morehouse. The bus will be displayed outside the college's arts center, which will house a collection of Ray Charles memorabilia.

Big-Time Overhaul For Graceland
|
Managers of Elvis Presley's famous home want to overhaul its tourist complex - with a new visitors center bigger than a football field, a convention hotel and high-tech museum displays that can give a new, digital life to the King himself.
All it will take to bring about those wonders is $250 million or so; the total reorganization of CKX Inc., the New York-based company that controls all things Elvis; and a publicly supported facelift for Graceland's struggling neighborhood.
The obstacles are far from small, but the people behind the plans, led by CKX Chairman Robert F.X. Sillerman, have a history of putting together big deals and making money for investors.
Sillerman, a multimillionaire dealer in media and entertainment assets, took over Graceland in 2005 when he bought the rights to Elvis' name and image from daughter Lisa Marie, Presley's sole heir.
When Presley died, his finances were in sad shape. Led by his ex-wife Priscilla Presley, the estate formed Elvis Presley Enterprises, opened Graceland to the public and solidified the legal rights to make money on Elvis' name and image.
Last year, Graceland took in $27 million in revenue, and the overall Elvis business brings in more than $40 million a year. That made him the second-highest grossing dead celebrity in 2006, behind only Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, according to Forbes.
Lisa Marie Presley still owns her father's house and 15 percent of Elvis Presley Enterprises, but CKX controls Graceland and its sprawling complex of souvenir shops and memorabilia museums.
Graceland's current visitors center, souvenir shops and museums were cobbled together by renovating a small strip mall across the street from what the Elvis faithful affectionately call ''the mansion.''
The new plans call for leveling all that and building a 80,000-square-foot visitors center designed from the ground up for handling big crowds and high-tech exhibits.
''To put that in perspective, that's about six or seven times the size of the mansion,'' Sillerman said.
The center will be equipped for the kind of technical wizardry that allowed singer Celine Dion to recently perform what appeared to be a live duet with Elvis on the ''American Idol'' TV show, which CKX also owns.
For years, Elvis Presley Enterprises, now a CKX subsidiary, has been buying land for expansion and has put together 100-acres needed for the renovation, which would move the tourist center to the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as Graceland.
Graceland's 128-room Heartbreak Hotel, also on the wrong side of the four-lane street, is to be replaced by a convention hotel, on the better side, with up to 500 rooms.

Jug Band Music Takes Center Stage in New Documentary Featuring Legendary Musicians
|
Having greatly influenced the folk and rock music that defined the 1960s, jug band music is being rediscovered thanks in part to the new documentary, "Chasin' Gus' Ghost".
The film features live performances by such notable musicians as John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful, and Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Bill Keith, Maria Muldaur and the late Fritz Richmond of the influential Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Rock luminary Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, blues icon Charlie Musselwhite, and many other artists who were influenced by the great jug band musicians of the past appear in the film, which weaves live performances with interviews, archival footage and photography.
The documentary's name, "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" pays tribute to Gus Cannon and Cannon's Jug Stompers, a band from the 1920s, a time when Gus' band and others, such as The Memphis Jug Band and the Dixieland Jug Blowers, were creating their unique sounds in Memphis and Louisville.
Chasin' Gus' Ghost will have its live premiere as part of the San Francisco Jug Band Festival on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the Roxie New College Film Center in San Francisco.

"LED ZEPPLIN - THE RIDE" READY FOR 2008 PARK OPENING
|
Construction on Led Zeppelin's new theme park roller coaster ride has been completed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The speedy attraction, "Led Zeppelin - The Ride," will open to the public at the new Hard Rock Park in 2008, as part of a number of rock-themed rides.
"Led Zeppelin -- The Ride" reaches 150 feet and is located in the park's "Rock & Roll Heaven" zone. The six-and-a-half-minute looping ride will hit 65 miles per hour -- and speakers will conveniently be located behind each rider's head, playing Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." Before getting on the roller coaster, riders will enter a silver airship, similar to the cover of Zeppelin's debut album. There will also be multi-media players showing Zeppelin footage for people waiting in line.
Singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones took part in the roller coaster's design.
Also completed is a three-story tall sand sculpture featuring the faces of John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, and Jimi Hendrix.
The 140-acre Hard Rock Park will feature more than 40 attractions, including shows, children's play areas, restaurants, cafes and retail stores.

Improved Copyright Search System To Replace Current Search Systems In Mid August
|
In mid August, the Copyright Office will launch a powerful new records search system that accesses more than 20 million digital records of registrations and recorded documents from 1978 to the present. The new system allows searching by title, name, keyword, and registration or document number. Through a command keyword search, elements of any or all fields can be combined to search the records.
Users can also search by type of work, such as sound recordings, dramas, motion pictures, visual materials, or preregistrations. The search method combines three separate databases that previously permitted only limited searching. The search tool uses Voyager software, the same system used by the Library of Congress Online Catalog.

BLUES MUSIC AWARD CHANGES FOR 2008
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-- August 1, 2007; CONTACT: Jay Sieleman, Executive Director, (901) 527-2583/jay@blues.org
Memphis, TN -- The Blues Foundation announces several changes for the nomination process currently underway in preparation for the 29th Blues Music Awards next May when it will once again recognize the finest in Blues performances and recordings.
Working through its existing committee that annually reviews the categories and the nomination and voting processes, the Board of Directors has made the following changes for 2008:
• Recognize the increasing number of video releases by honoring one DVD title with a Blues Music Award; • Eliminate the Comeback category due to a historical shortage of qualifying releases; and • Restrict eligibility in non-album categories to two consecutive nominations unless the artist has an eligible release in the third year.
While there is likely to be little controversy over adding the DVD category, the elimination of the Comeback Album category may be more surprising because the perennial shortage of real Blues releases qualifying for the category is generally unknown to the public. Filmmakers, record labels and artists may now submit their Blues DVDs for consideration at www.blues.org just as they do with eligible CDs.
The most significant change, of course, is the expanded restriction on the eligibility to be nominated in a given year. The move is actually a continuation of the Foundation’s effort in recent years to address an oft-heard complaint about the Blues Music Awards—the same people win every year. While this has not been as widespread as some suggest and is a problem in other musical genres as well, The Blues Foundation has nevertheless undertaken steps to address this legitimate concern. In recent years, The Blues Foundation has, with their permission, named categories after B.B. King and Pinetop Perkins and correspondingly removed them from future consideration in these categories. Under the change announced today, a two-time winner in a non-album category such as Contemporary Blues Male Artist or Instrumentalist-Bass will not be eligible for a third consecutive nomination unless that musician has released a CD during the current eligibility period. After sitting out a year, the musician would be once again eligible in the following year.
The Board also agreed with the committee, deciding against adding zydeco, international and Blues/rock categories at this time. Individual zydeco releases may have limited Blues content and has just been awarded a Grammy category. The Blues Music Awards are already open to international artists and releases, and artists have been nominated in recent years from Europe and Australia. While there is some sympathy for the Blues/Rock category that appeals to many fans, especially younger ones, the categories already include three Contemporary Blues categories.

BENTONIA AND THE BLUE FRONT CAFE TO BE HONORED BY THE MISSISSIPPI BLUES COMMISSION
|
Bentonia, Mississippi and the Blue Front Cafe will soon join an elite list of historic sites on the Mississippi Blues Trail. The trail, a project of the Mississippi Blues Commission, will eventually include more than 100 historical markers and interpretive sites throughout the site.
The Bentonia marker will be dedicated in front of the Blue Front Cafe, Mississippi's oldest active juke joint, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 21.
Participating in the ceremony will be Broke & Hungry Records recording artist Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. Holmes is both the owner of the Blue Front and a highly regarded country blues guitarist whose two recent CDs have garnered praise around the globe.
Despite its tiny size, the town of Bentonia looms large in the consciousness of blues fans. It was here that a strange and powerful branch of Delta blues was born. Known worldwide as the Bentonia Blues, this mournful blues style is notable for its unusual open-D minor tuning and haunting lyrical content.
Today, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is the sole surviving Bentonia blues guitarist to perform in the style that made his hometown famous. Both of his recent CDs on Broke & Hungry Records - BACK TO BENTONIA (2006) and DONE GOT TIRED OF TRYIN' (2007) - were recorded at the Blue Front Cafe. The rustic juke was first opened in 1948 by Holmes' parents Carey and Mary Holmes. Jimmy "Duck" Holmes took over day-to-day operation of the Blue Front when his father died in 1970.
The juke has been featured in documentaries from around the world. This fall it will be featured in a film for BBC Television in Great Britain.

FESTIVAL VIDEOS AND PHOTOS HAVE A SPECIAL WEBSITE
Independent music portal Virtual Festivals.com has taken its biggest stride yet in its crusade to bridge the gap between live music events and online by unveiling its most ambitious development to date; 'MyStage', a fully-featured, user-generated content platform within the Virtual Festivals website that allows fans to share their own videos, photos and blogs with the world.
This exclusive facility now adds a whole new dimension to the festival-going experience by empowering anyone in possession of a video-capturing device, be it a camera or mobile phone, to upload and broadcast their personal festival experiences to a worldwide audience of millions. Just like YouTube and Flickr, users can rate each other's submissions, subscribe to receive content from particular users, sort footage according to popularity, search by tag (keyword) and even embed content on third party websites (such as their MySpace or Facebook profiles).
Beyond the fans, MyStage offers considerable benefits to the industry. Festival organizers are able to have their own official channels, providing them with unlimited video streaming potential and a ready-made audience at no cost, and Virtual Festivals is currently in talks with several major festivals about integrating a white label version of the platform with their official websites. The service also offers attractive new opportunities for sponsor brands to interface directly with Virtual Festivals' highly targeted audience and several major brands have already signed up for campaigns (to be announced shortly).
