We love all Blues festivals, from tiny, medium, large to humongous, but we thought it would be fun to share with our readers what makes any one of these festivals truly a standout (besides the fine artists of course).

SUE PALMER - Winner for Best Self-Produced CD from the Blues Foundation : : Sophisticated Ladies
San Diego' s Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sue Palmer, has amazed audiences all over the world with her unique style and phenomenal left hand. She delights in creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the small clubs and cafes of 1932 Paris, Harlem, West Texas and Hawaii.
Palmer may now add producer and visionary to her resume." Her 2007 release, "Sophisticated Ladies," has won the 2008 International Blues Challenge (IBC) Award for Best Self Produced CD, awarded by the Blues Foundation in Memphis.
Sue Palmer is no stranger to the spotlight. For five years, Sue was the musical partner of blues diva and recording artist Candye Kane. They toured France and most of Europe, including Scandinavia, Greece, and Turkey. Their travels also took them to Reunion Island, Canada, Australia, and all over the U.S. Under the moniker Sue "Beehive" Palmer with Candye Kane and the Swingin' Armadillos, she appeared on the Penn & Teller Show and the Roseanne Show, where Sue acted as the talk show band leader (1999).
Equally at home with 12-bar blues, boogie woogie, swing, jazz or country, Sue is a successful band leader in her own right. She fronted her own swing band Tobacco Road for twelve years and produced and played on four independently released CD's.

Various Artists- Grammy Winner for best Traditional Blues Album : : Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen
Once in a lifetime you may experience a brief moment when the stars align and something truly extraordinary happens. This was the case in October 2004, when four of the greatest living blues legends were assembled in Dallas, Texas for one incomparable night of music. At the time they ranged in age from 89 to 94 and all had received the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship Award, the highest honor in the USA for traditional arts.
These musicians have devoted their entire life to playing the blues, and staging such an epic event was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Once reunited, the old magic reemerged. It was if they were long lost school buddies.

JJ CALE and ERIC CLAPTON - Grammy Winners for best "Contemporary" Blues Album : : The Road to Escondido
After years of admiring each others musical masterworks and Clapton covers of Cale songs such as "After Midnight" and "Cocaine," guitar greats J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton teamed up for the first time to create an original album together, THE ROAD TO ESCONDIDO. The 14 track CD was produced and recorded by the duo in August 2005 in California.
In a true collaboration, Cale and Clapton jointly produced and recorded the album, each playing and singing on the tracks. Cale wrote 11 of the songs, Clapton wrote "Three Little Girls," John Mayer wrote "Hard To Thrill" and the duo cover the blues classic "Sporting Life Blues." J.J. Cale's touring band accompanies them on the album as well as guest musicians including, Taj Mahal, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II, Albert Lee, Nathan East, Willie Weeks and Steve Jordan. Particularly special is the involvement of Billy Preston, who donated his classic keyboard talents throughout the album.
The Road To Escondido marks the first full-length album the two have created together.
Cale's entire 40-plus year career has produced only 13 albums. Clapton's career, also spanning more than 40 years, has resulted in 18 Grammy Awards (now 19) and the distinct honor of being the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Jackie Greene and the Tower Of Power Horn Section in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, 2-17

Jackie Greene and the TOWER OF POWER HORN SECTION will be performing at MontBleu Resort on Sunday, February 17. The doors open at 7:30pm and opening act: Martyn Joseph will kick off the evening at 8:30pm.
Jackie Greene just played guitar, harmonica, and keyboards for the Dead at the Obama benefit in SF last weekend at the Warfield. He also is a full time member of Phil and Friends (Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead).
When DIG Music owner Marty DeAnda happened into a local Sacramento folk pub’s Monday hoot night in the autumn of 2001 he was clearly not expecting to hear a musician that changed his life. But he did. A scrawny young kid with a big old-soul voice, guitar chops and plenty of musical confidence stepped up to the mike and made all room conversation cease. A few more club visits, a few more dawning nights of insight, and DIG Music had their first new artist signed to the label.
Jackie Greene had blown into Sacramento only months earlier from a tiny old Northern California gold rush town that was, in its day, called Hangtown, but now is more discreetly named Placerville. Greene, a local just turned 21 then, sounded like a displaced Delta boy, picked up by Guthrie’s dustbowl winds and set down in Harte, Steinbeck and Saroyan Country.
Greene is strikingly unself-conscious in the way he envisions his time-out-of-mind place. His voice is big and casually seductive in the way that Bob Dylan and Tom Waits and Gregg Allman’s voices are. His tone and inflections seem naturally born, from an old soul inhabiting a skinny body. When he needs to wail and growl, the words pour out like smooth whiskey; when he offers intimacies, they can almost seem too private. Like his heroes, Dylan and Waits, his source material embraces folk, blues and country; the end result is both cutting edge and timeless.
Greene’s compactness of phrase with feeling is impressive. He can turn a beautiful line, he can lay down a lowdown lick and leave you wanting some more. He’s a smart young man who is an accomplished musician on acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, piano and Hammond B-3 organ.

PC Magazine rounds up top 12 customizable streamers. Get Free Music!

(by Kyle Monson for PC Magazine) 12 sites offer free music streaming and go beyond Internet radio by matching your individual tastes or even letting you pick the songs yourself.
To all the oldsters who say that kids these days are spoiled for refusing to pay for music, I say "bah!" Free, legal music has existed forever—or at least since the invention of the radio—and you folks had good radio stations and programs to listen to, back in the pre-Clear Channel era.
These days, a good radio station is hard to come by and CDs are $20 a pop. So, what's a music lover to do? Turn to the Internet, of course, where you can find music-streaming services that are not only free and legal (like all radio) but customizable.
There are plenty of services out there that offer either loose customization or full-blown playlist building. Services like Pandora, Slacker, and Jango let you enter the name of an artist or artists and listen to a stream of songs tailored specifically to your tastes. Other music sites like BoomShuffle and finetune allow you to pick the actual songs you'll hear; once you've added X number of songs, your playlist is treated as a full-fledged Web radio station and you can listen to it as often as you like, pass it around the Web, and embed it on a blog or social network.
As with anything free, there are some caveats. In order to get the blessing of the music industry, these music sites can't just let you play any old song you want, whenever you want. The playlists you build and the streams you customize need to be considered Web radio stations. Here are some of the conditions that have to be met to be considered Web radio:
- Any playlist you build must include songs from at least 15 different artists
- The playlist order is randomized
- The listener can only skip a certain number of songs per listening session
- The site—not the user—must make royalty payments
These are minor hang-ups—after all, the payoff is that you get to listen to free music legally—but they're worth mentioning.
These sites are a perfect match for a certain type of music listener: the kind who wants a little more control than typical Web radio affords, but who also wants to listen to new music that might not be in his or her iTunes folder. They're also perfect for office workers who can't store their personal music libraries on work machines but go crazy in their cubicles without tunes.
Even better, they're all free, and you won't get sued for using any of them. So what are you waiting for?

The most full-featured and rich of the free music sites, last.fm lets you enter an artist's name and then plays a radio station of the artist you picked as well as similar artists. On the artist's bio page, you'll find free tracks and videos, pics, concert listings, and other last.fm users who are fans of the artist. And the site does a good job of linking popular bands to more obscure ones that sound similar, making it easy to discover new music.

The granddaddy of free, customizable Internet radio, Pandora lets you enter a favorite artist or track name and gives you a customized radio station full of similar songs. It works well and allows you to skip a few tracks if you don't like them, and you can give songs a thumbs-up or thumbs-down to let Pandora know if it's on the right track with its recommendations. And if you find a station that you love, you can send it to your friends. All in all, Pandora's great, but the next one is better…

Slacker (and its Web 2.0-y sibling, Jango) is Pandora on steroids. Enter the name of an artist to start a customized radio stream of similar bands, and at any time, you can edit the list of bands your station pulls from. Tweak it to your heart's content to get the perfect radio station, mark your favorite songs, and do it all without even registering.

Like BoomShuffle for lazy people, finetune lets you build a playlist from its catalog of songs, and if you're too lazy/busy to choose all of the requisite 45 songs (required for your playlist to qualify as a Web radio station), it uses your selected songs to extrapolate and add more songs it thinks you'll like. The BoomShuffle interface is more polished and it's easier to search, but finetune's "Lazy" auto-complete feature is great, and it can lead you to music you wouldn't otherwise have discovered.

NEW DATES FOR THE 2009 IBC ANNOUNCED
|
The scheduled date for the 25th International Blues Challenge has been changed to February 4-7, 2009. This is a change from what we thought a few weeks ago. At that time, we thought we would have to go at the same time as the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise, January 24-31. It now looks like the hard core will be able to do both in 2009.

BLUES MUSIC AWARDS WEEKEND ANNOUCEMENT
|
The 3rd Annual Delta Groove Blues Revue will take place the night after the Blues Music Awards. On Friday May 9th, at Clarksdale, Mississippi's Ground Zero, the historic and intimate blues club, owned by Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett, Delta Groove will bring their authentic blues from 2pm to 2am. For the lucky audience in this 270-person club, this will be blues heaven on earth. On Saturday May 10th, the party is tentatively scheduled to continue at the Bluesville club at the Horseshoe Casino with Eclecto Groove artists, Jason Ricci and New Blood and Mike Zito.

We’ve spent the better part of the last week dealing with reliability problems with our server and our domain site. In order to completely eliminate these problems, we are changing the name and the web address of the station. We are no longer known as A World of Blues. Our old web address at www(dot)aworldofblues(dot)com no longer works.
Our new name is The World of Blues. It’s only a slight difference, but an important one. With just this one small change we can increase our reliability tremendously.

The film includes memorable footage of some of the blues' greatest players -- Son House, Bessie Smith, Jimmy Rushing, Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker.

South Carolina celebrates "Nappy Brown Day"
|
The State of South Carolina honored Rhythm & Blues pioneer Nappy Brown with an official state proclamation declaring February 15, 2008 as "Nappy Brown Day" throughout the state. Nappy visited Chapin High School in Chapin, SC to receive the proclamation and spoke to the students as part of Black History Month. Chapin is close to Pomaria, SC, a beautiful small town that Nappy called home for several months. Nappy was both thrilled and a bit taken aback by such an unexpected honor.
Brown is one of the great voices in American music. In the mid-50s, pre-dating soul music, he was a major R&B star, with a number of hit singles on the charts, including his signature tune, "Don't Be Angry" and "The Right Time," a song later associated with Ray Charles.
Brown's most recent recording, LONG TIME COMING, was released on Blind Pig Records last September. Critics have unanimously praised the CD as a triumphant return from a master which swings with the same soulful authority of his hits of a half-century ago. In the words of Living Blues magazine, "At age 77, Nappy Brown is singing better than ever. In fact, he's singing better than just about any other bluesman currently recording."

2008 BLUES HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUCED

The Blues Foundation has announced the 2008 the Blues Hall of Fame inductions.

The Hall of Fame committee is chaired by Jim O'Neal, founding editor of Living Blues, and David Sanjek, recently of the BMI Archives. The induction ceremony will be held at The Blues Foundation's Charter Member Dinner on Wednesday, May 7, at the Tunica RiverPark in Tunica, Mississippi, the night before the 2008 Blues Music Awards.
The 2008 inductees include living performers Jimmy McCracklin and Hubert Sumlin, as well as late artists Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Peetie Wheatstraw, Jimmy Witherspoon, and the Mississippi Sheiks. John Hammond and Paul Oliver are the non-performers inducted this year. The play 7 Guitars, by August Wilson, and the book, Moanin' at Midnight: The Life and Times of Howlin' Wolf by James Segrest & Mark Hoffman, were also selected.
The following singles or album tracks will be inducted during the ceremony: “Back-Water Blues” by Bessie Smith; “Double Trouble” by Otis Rush; and “My Babe” by Little Walter. These albums were also chosen for induction: Piney Woods Blues by Big Joe Williams; Members Only by Bobby Bland; Rocks the House by Etta James; Freddy King Sings by Freddy King; and I'm Jimmy Reed by Jimmy Reed.

Beyoncé to play blues legend Etta James
|
Singer Beyoncé Knowles is set to play blues and R&B legend Etta James in a new film.
Speaking to BlackFilm.com, actor Cedric the Entertainer said that Knowles would star in the film 'Cadillac Records'.
The film looks at the music scene in Chicago in the 1950s and the lives of, among others, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Elvis Presley.
Among the other stars of 'Cadillac Records' are Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Columbus Short, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Tammy Blanchard.
The film will shoot in New Jersey and Mississippi.

NEWS FROM BLIND PIG RECORDS
Blind Pig Records has announced that it will begin issuing high-quality 180 gram virgin vinyl LPs. The first three titles to be released as part of the "Master Vinyl Series" will be The Lost Tapes by Muddy Waters, Drinkin' TNT 'n' Smokin' Dynamite by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, and Painkiller by Tommy Castro. These limited-edition pressings will be released on May 6, 2008, the same date as Blind Pig's CD release by Kenny Neal, entitled Let Life Flow.Blind Pig plans to issue a select number of titles this year under the Master Vinyl Series, most likely three at a time.
"This is in response to the growing audiophile market for high-quality LPs," said label president Edward Chmelewski. "And for those of us who fondly remember listening to LPs in the 60s and 70s, it's a lot of fun to return to that format. For one, it's great to have the larger artwork canvas afforded by the LP packaging, and the warmth and depth of the sound quality on these new versions is amazing. And it's kind of cool to come full circle back to the LP, the only format we were selling when we started the label in 1977."
