THE TRIBUTES BY CARIBBEAN ARTISTS TO U.S. PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL BARACK OBAMA KEEP ON COMING
The latest artist to sing the praises of Obama is Jamaican dancehall star, Mavado. The singer recently dropped `We Need Barack` for Russell Simmons and Green Lantern’s official Barack Obama mix tape. The album will be given away as part of the candidate’s campaign and feature other artists Lenny Kravitz, Kanye West, Jay Z, Common and Mos Def.

Mavado joins artists like the Mighty Sparrow and Cocoa Tea, who have all sung tributes to Obama.

ELEPHANTS MAN’S `LET’S GET PHYSICAL` DEBUTS AT #1 ON THE REGGAE BILLBOARD CHARTS
Dancehall King Elephant Man released his latest studio CD, `Let’s Get Physical,` on April 8, 2008, and it went straight to the #1 spot on the Billboard Reggae Top 10 charts.

The album is the first release from a new venture which joins Sean `Diddy` Combs’ Bad Boy Records with the largest independent Jamaican music label, VP Records. `Let’s Get Physical` features the hit lead single `Five O,` on which Wyclef appears.

The remix for `Five-O` is blazing a trail with rising digital sales and has caught attention at radio with an all-star line up from Swizz Beats, Assassin, Yung Joc and Diddy. `Jump,` the hard-hitting, high energy second single, also features Swizz Beats. Barbados-born Rihanna appears on the steamy dance track `Throw Your Hands Up` and Elephant Man-fan Chris Brown lends his vocals to the bouncy `Feel the Steam.`

GOSPEL ALBUM FROM REGGAE GOSPEL ARTIST KIRK DAVIS
"Don't Deny Me," the highly anticipated debut gospel album from reggae gospel artist Kirk Davis formerly known as Little Kirk, was released on May 5, 2008.

"Don't Deny Me," the first full-length gospel album from Kirk Davis, is beautifully lyrical and thoroughly inspiring.

As one of the most respected vocalists in reggae music, Kirk Davis teams up with brother Beenie Man, St Matthew, brother Shamrock, Andrene Lewis, Chief Mutsembi and his youngest daughter Breanna Davis to bring a 16-rack rousing testimony to the power and glory of the Holy Spirit.

ARTISTS CLAIM SAMAS WERE RIGGED
South African Music Awards (Sama) organisers have rejected claims that last week's awards were rigged. A group of musicians said the selection process had been unfair and that artists from big music companies were chosen at the expense of smaller production houses.

Organisers say they are disappointed but appear unfazed by the allegations.

Jabulani Tsambo, popularly known as Hip-Hop Pantsula, won awards for the Best Male Solo Artist of the Year, and the Best Rap Album.

The late reggae king, Lucky Dube, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Tributes were also paid to other musicians who had passed away.

CHEF MAYRA: YUMMY RECIPES
Vegan Key Lime Cheesecake Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 containers vegan cream cheese (Tofutti brand is best)
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 1/4 cup lime or key lime juice
• 2 tsp lime zest
• 2 tbsp cornstarch
• 1 9-inch pre-made vegan graham cracker pie crust
• fresh fruit for garnish (optional)
PREPARATION:
Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a blender or food processor, combine the vegan cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, lime juice and zest, and cornstarch. Process until smooth and creamy. Pour into pie crust

Bake for 50-60 minutes, until cheesecake is lightly golden brown on top. Allow to cool, then chill for at least 2 hours before serving.
Serve topped with slices of fresh fruit if desired.

“Sausage Idea”
INGREDIENTS
• Olive oil
• Onions, sliced
• Pinch of fennel seed
• Garlic powder
• Dash of cumin
• Salt
• Pepper
• Vegetable of choice (eg. italian zucchini)

METHOD
Here's an idea I came up with for a tasty vegetarian meal without having to resort to packaged soy or faux meats. Do you like sausage? Did you know that the sausage flavor you love so much has nothing to do with it being made of meat? It is merely the seasoning used in the sausage that gives it that distinctive flavor.

So to make any vegetable taste like sweet Italian sausage, just saute or grill the vegetable in olive oil, with some sliced onions and add a pinch of fennel seed, some garlic, a dash of cumin, salt and pepper - to taste.

NOTES
I have found garlic powder works better than fresh garlic because it soaks into the vegetable. I have found sliced or diced Italian zucchini is the best vegetable for making this faux sausage but any vegetable will do.

This "vegetable sausage" and onion mix tastes great on top of a bowl of spaghetti and tomato sauce.
Yum!

Enjoy these yummy recipes and check back here next week and I will tell you the about the pros and cons of different cooking oils.

REGGAE SUMFEST 2008 - READY AND SET TO GO
Reggae Sumfest 2008 is definitely on for July 13-19.

2008 will mark the 16th presentation of the festival and, by all accounts, it's shaping up to be another first-class event. As usual, the festival will kick off with the beach party at Tropical Beach on Sunday, July 13, featuring top sound systems. On Thursday, July 17 top dancehall performers will energise the full capacity crowd, while Friday and Saturday will continue the tradition of offering the finest reggae singers and bands, alongside top international stars.

The line up for Reggae Sumfest this year promises to be excellent. While not all contracts have yet been signed, a peek at the wish list for the festival revealed that the local line up promises to be as strong as ever. A long list of artistes are being targeted which include Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Sizzla, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Mavado, Busy Signal, Jah Cure, Richie Spice, Macka Diamond, Brick & Lace, Tami Chynn, Erup, Queen I-Frica, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Anthony B, Voice Mail., Vybz Cartel, Demarco, Courtney John. Harry Toddler. No clues were revealed for the International acts, however it was hinted that negotiations were ongoing with some very 'big names'.

BILLY OCEAN INDUCTED INTO INTERNATIONAL REGGAE MUSIC HALL OF FAME
Trinidad & Tobago-born, UK raised singer, Billy Ocean, was Sunday night inducted into the International Reggae & World Music Awards Hall Of Fame.

The singer, whose real name is Leslie Sebastian Charles, was honored for his lengthy years of service to the music industry at the Apollo Theater by organizers of the annual event, Martin’s International & Associates, LLC.

Ocean had a string of rhythm and blues-tinged international pop hits in the 1970s and 1980s and last returned to the touring circuit after an absence of 15 years, performing in January at the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He released his new album, `Wilberforce 200` and the single, `Chained` last month.

Marvin Walker : : Strangest Things
Marvin Walker a.k.a Walker T a former sergeant in the US Marine Corps, who recently gave up his military career to pursue one in music has a message for the world. However, he is not drawn by the promise of bling and fame, but instead owes his switch to a higher calling: to open the eyes of the world to the pain and injustice inflicted on the poor.

He has penned the song, I Cry, a song that addresses the cycle of violence and poverty that often afflicts Third World nations struggling to secure their future in a world of arms proliferation and economic struggles.

“My songs are inspired by my experiences in life itself. I know about guns, I can say what guns do, and write as close to home as possible and not in rhymes, in real terms about conflict and what it means to be on a battlefield,” he said.

“I believe in what I am doing, there is a message that people need to here. There are people who are suffering in this world, but who are so used to this lifestyle that they don’t know there is a better tomorrow but for an outsider looking in, I cry for them, because I see the devastation and what could be,” the former resident of August Town said.

The lyrics to I Cry written just one month after Walker opted to leave the military speak volumes of his mission:

The yutes dem a cry everyday for pressure and pain
The yutes dem a cry everyday and ah pure bloodstain
The yutes dem a cry everyday and who is to be blamed
Everyday I see dem a pray, but it is still the same

Now that he is doing music full time, financing his promotion through his own pockets, he admits that he misses the military which took up a large chunk, eight years of his life.

“I loved doing what I used to do, helping people, building schools and bridges, painting churches, but I love the music, so I am giving this all I have,” he said.
He will be shooting his I Cry video soon.
