ARTISTS CLAIM SAMAS WERE RIGGED
|
South African Music Awards (Sama) organisers have rejected claims that
last week's awards were rigged. A group of musicians said the
selection process had been unfair and that artists from big music
companies were chosen at the expense of smaller production houses.
Organisers say they are disappointed but appear unfazed by the allegations.
Jabulani Tsambo, popularly known as Hip-Hop Pantsula, won awards for
the Best Male Solo Artist of the Year, and the Best Rap Album.
The late reggae king, Lucky Dube, was honoured with the Lifetime
Achievement Award. Tributes were also paid to other musicians who had
passed away.

CHEF MAYRA: YUMMY RECIPES
|
Vegan Key Lime Cheesecake Recipe INGREDIENTS: • 2 containers vegan cream cheese (Tofutti brand is best) • 1 cup sugar • 1 tsp vanilla • 1/4 cup lime or key lime juice • 2 tsp lime zest • 2 tbsp cornstarch • 1 9-inch pre-made vegan graham cracker pie crust • fresh fruit for garnish (optional) PREPARATION: Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a blender or food processor, combine the vegan cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, lime juice and zest, and cornstarch. Process until smooth and creamy. Pour into pie crust
Bake for 50-60 minutes, until cheesecake is lightly golden brown on top. Allow to cool, then chill for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve topped with slices of fresh fruit if desired.
“Sausage Idea” INGREDIENTS • Olive oil • Onions, sliced • Pinch of fennel seed • Garlic powder • Dash of cumin • Salt • Pepper • Vegetable of choice (eg. italian zucchini)
METHOD Here's an idea I came up with for a tasty vegetarian meal without having to resort to packaged soy or faux meats. Do you like sausage? Did you know that the sausage flavor you love so much has nothing to do with it being made of meat? It is merely the seasoning used in the sausage that gives it that distinctive flavor.
So to make any vegetable taste like sweet Italian sausage, just saute or grill the vegetable in olive oil, with some sliced onions and add a pinch of fennel seed, some garlic, a dash of cumin, salt and pepper - to taste.
NOTES I have found garlic powder works better than fresh garlic because it soaks into the vegetable. I have found sliced or diced Italian zucchini is the best vegetable for making this faux sausage but any vegetable will do.
This "vegetable sausage" and onion mix tastes great on top of a bowl of spaghetti and tomato sauce. Yum!
Enjoy these yummy recipes and check back here next week and I will tell you the about the pros and cons of different cooking oils.

BILLY OCEAN INDUCTED INTO INTERNATIONAL REGGAE MUSIC HALL OF FAME

Marvin Walker : : Strangest Things
Marvin Walker a.k.a Walker T a former sergeant in the US Marine Corps, who recently gave up his military career to pursue one in music has a message for the world. However, he is not drawn by the promise of bling and fame, but instead owes his switch to a higher calling: to open the eyes of the world to the pain and injustice inflicted on the poor.
He has penned the song, I Cry, a song that addresses the cycle of violence and poverty that often afflicts Third World nations struggling to secure their future in a world of arms proliferation and economic struggles.
“My songs are inspired by my experiences in life itself. I know about guns, I can say what guns do, and write as close to home as possible and not in rhymes, in real terms about conflict and what it means to be on a battlefield,” he said.
“I believe in what I am doing, there is a message that people need to here. There are people who are suffering in this world, but who are so used to this lifestyle that they don’t know there is a better tomorrow but for an outsider looking in, I cry for them, because I see the devastation and what could be,” the former resident of August Town said.
The lyrics to I Cry written just one month after Walker opted to leave the military speak volumes of his mission:
The yutes dem a cry everyday for pressure and pain The yutes dem a cry everyday and ah pure bloodstain The yutes dem a cry everyday and who is to be blamed Everyday I see dem a pray, but it is still the same
Now that he is doing music full time, financing his promotion through his own pockets, he admits that he misses the military which took up a large chunk, eight years of his life.
“I loved doing what I used to do, helping people, building schools and bridges, painting churches, but I love the music, so I am giving this all I have,” he said. He will be shooting his I Cry video soon.
