BIG JAMES AND THE CHICAGO PLAYBOYS : : RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW
|
"Big James" Montgomery is a young man with a solid pedigree in the world of rhythm and blues. He played with Little Milton, Albert King and Buddy Guy before becoming trombonist and lead vocalist with the Chicago Playboys, the Windy City's premier R&B ensemble. Some years after the passing of former bandleader Johnny Christian, James and saxophonist Charles Kimball reformed and revitalized the band, turning it into a dynamic, soulful sextet that's turning heads and making new fans in Chicago and out on the road. "Right Here Right Now" is a great introduction to the Playboys' unique blend of straight ahead blues and gospel-tinged, horn-driven soul.

JIM BYRNES : : MY WALKING STICK
|
|
MY WALKING STICK is the latestblood and guts, behind your knees, love, life, death, and after-life release from blues and roots artists Jim Byrnes, whose prior albums have won him numerous Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the US Grammy). It's the follow-up to his multi award-winning Black Hen Music CDs, HOUSE OF REFUGE (2006) and FRESH HORSES (2004), both produced by one of North America's most critically acclaimed roots music producers, Steve Dawson, and who once again produced the new album and also contributes his multi-talents as a musician.
Recorded in Vancouver, MY WALKING STICK features Jim's take on some classic gospel, mixed with his original songs and some classic Candiana by The Band, and Oh Susanna.
"You know, since I first got in cahoots with Steve Dawson, I knew I'd found a great ally in genre bending and eliminating the pigeon holes often foisted on musical creativity," says Byrnes. "I've been at this professionally for more than 40 years and I really feel that I'm only now discovering my true voice."

COME SEE LEGENDS PLAY AT THE 25TH IH MISSISSIPPI VALLEY BLUES FESTIVAL
|
Three of the Five Nominees for Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year to Play Fest
The IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, one of the longest running blues festival’s in the nation, is known for the depth of its lineup and its laid-back, noncommercial atmosphere. This year’s 25th anniversary festival, July 2 – 4, is sure to be a firecracker of a good time with 28 acts playing for three days on the banks of the blues-inspiring Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa’s LeClaire Park.
The IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival offers something for everyone—from contemporary blues to gospel and jazz. For those who love the traditional blues, three of the five nominees for the 2009 Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year are playing this year’s festival: Honeyboy Edwards, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater and Magic Slim.
Honeyboy Edwards, a 94-year-old Grammy Award winner, is one of the last original Delta blues players and has played with some of the biggest blues legends of the 20th century. Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, known for performing west side Chicago blues in his recognizable headdress, has also been nominated for a Grammy Award. Magic Slim, a national treasure and six-time National Blues Award Winner, will be performing his intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style with the Teardrops.
Magic Slim, and legendary stage performer Sugar Pie DeSanto, will be presented with RiverRoad Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year’s festival. The Mississippi Valley Blues Society annually presents this award to recognize artists who have devoted their lives to bringing river blues, music that runs deep in the soul, to anyone they meet on life’s highway. The artists may not have been as recognized as the “stars,” but they are the true legends of the blues and the art form’s living history.
Advance three-day passes are available for only $30. For more information about the festival, artists, ticket locations and lodging, please visit www.mvbs.org or call 563-32-BLUES.

"WOODSTOCK" EXTRAS INCLUDE 2 MORE HOURS OF MUSIC
|
Original Woodstock Poster
(77Square.com) Ah, Woodstock. Three days of peace and music, 40 years of being a cash cow for the entertainment industry.Cynical? Maybe. Ironic? Certainly. Depending on your age or your politics, the generation-defining concert event known as Woodstock represents either the best or the worst of the 1960s. But regardless of age or politics, one can still appreciate the documentary that sprang from the event, now on a recently remastered DVD loaded with extras.
"Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music" comes out in advance of the 40th anniversary of the event, which took place Aug. 15-18, 1969, on a farm near Bethel, N.Y. (Woodstock, N.Y., is 50 miles away.) It's the same director's cut that originally came to VHS in 1994 and then to DVD in 1997, adding 40-some minutes to the original three-hour theatrical release. This time around, however, the picture and the sound are gorgeous, much better than the grainy footage that seems to circulate when clips of this event are shown.
The 40th anniversary edition comes in two DVD versions and one on Blu-ray. There's a two-disc set (retailing for $24.98) with the sole extra being a featurette, "The Museum at Bethel Woods: The Story of the Sixties & Woodstock," that is more a tour through the museum that opened last summer than a documentary of the '60s or the concert.
The Ultimate Collector's Edition, available in a three-DVD ($59.98) or Blu-ray ($69.98) set, is where the goodies live. The third disc includes 18 performances that didn't make it into either the original film or the director's cut. They add up to nearly two hours of music, and include some acts that previously weren't seen on screen: the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, Johnny Winter and Mountain.
There's also a reprint copy of a 60-page Life magazine commemorative issue and an iron-on patch with the festival's iconic dove and guitar emblem. The Blu-ray has various interactive features, like the ability to create a "virtual screening" where friends with Blu-ray players can all connect up and watch and discuss the film together.
Another featurette, just over an hour long, collects vignettes of the making of the film. Director Michael Wadleigh and associate producer Dale Bell discuss making the film, with some comments from a director who assisted them, Martin Scorsese. Some vignettes are more for film students about film stock or camera choices. Many of their recollections are all the more amazing 40 years on when one considers the monstrous project was pulled off in a world pre-cell phones, laptops and other modern technological conveniences.
It's easy to think of "Woodstock" as a concert film, but Wadleigh and his crew capture the feel of the event beyond the music. Even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized this and awarded it the Oscar in 1970 for best documentary.
For instance, it was a stroke of brilliance to shoot the portable toilet cleaner, who had to have the worst job there. The announcements also were legendary, and give as much a sense of the event as the music does. ("The brown acid that is circulating is not specifically too good. ... It is suggested that you stay away from that. Of course it's your own trip.") The bleak ending that combines the music of Jimi Hendrix with visuals of the trash left behind was one that studio executives at Warner Brothers wanted changed (presumably because it was a bummer, man). Hippies and stoners aside, "Woodstock" shows a far more genteel world than a gathering of 400,000 might create. It doesn't portray the "us vs. them" attitude that seems to be the stereotype of the era, and it certainly exudes way more goodwill between the concertgoers and the townspeople than would likely happen today.
Time and time again, residents of the area smile through their inconveniences and talk about how nice the kids are and express concern that they'll get enough to eat. Even the guy cleaning the portable toilets says, "Glad to do it for these kids." The hippies might like to think they were all about peace, but this film shows the folks in upstate New York were pretty good about showing some love, too. And that's pretty far out, man.

Late blues great Koko Taylor gets musical sendoff
|
Hundreds of mourners turned out Thursday at a music-filled wake and memorial service for Chicago blues icon Koko Taylor, whose regal bearing and powerful voice earned her the nickname ``Queen of the Blues.''
Another visitation will be held today, also at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters, followed by her funeral with a eulogy to be delivered by the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Among those who paid tribute to Taylor Thursday were Mayor Richard Daley and musicians Delores Scott and Vance Kelly. The ``Queen'' lay in a glass-topped casket at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition headquarters on Chicago's South Side, dressed in an elegant off-white silk brocade dress, gloves and a tiara,
Daley told mourners, who included blues legend Buddy Guy, that Taylor's legacy will endure because of the power of her life story.
``You really haven't lost her,'' Daley said.
Clarence Stevens, host of an Indiana blues radio show, recalled that Taylor always insisted that he stay for dinner when he visited her. He noted her influence on a new generation of blues artists and her efforts to keep the music alive.
``We have to educate our children. We even have to educate our adults'' about the blues, Stevens said. ``But the blues will never die.''
Taylor's daughter, Joyce ``Cookie'' Threatt, introduced her mother's band to those attending the memorial service, which included performances by musicians in town for this weekend's Chicago Blues Festival.
``This was my mother's family for 18 years,'' she said.
Taylor's funeral is today.
Born Cora Walton just outside Memphis, Tennessee, Taylor said in a 1990 interview that her dream to become a blues singer was nurtured in the cotton fields outside her family's sharecropper shack.
``I used to listen to the radio, and when I was about 18 years old, B.B. King was a disc jockey and he had a radio program, 15 minutes a day, over in West Memphis, Arkansas and he would play the blues,'' she said. ``I would hear different records and things by Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Sonnyboy Williams and all these people, you know, which I just loved.''
Although her father encouraged her to sing only gospel music, Cora and her siblings would sneak out back with their homemade instruments and play the blues. With one brother accompanying on a guitar made out of bailing wire and nails and one brother on a fife made out of a corncob, she began on the path to blues woman.
Orphaned at 11, Koko - a nickname she earned because of an early love of chocolate - moved to Chicago at age 18 with her soon-to-be-husband, the late Robert ``Pops'' Taylor, in search for work. He would later be her manager.
While Taylor didn't have widespread mainstream success, her career spanned more than five decades and she was beloved by blues aficionados.
Her work included the best-selling song ``Wang Dang Doodle'' and tunes such as ``What Kind of Man is This'' and ``I Got What It Takes.''
Taylor made numerous national television appearances, was the subject of a PBS documentary and had a small part in director David Lynch's ``Wild at Heart.'' She earned seven Grammy nominations and won in 1984.
Taylor last performed on May 7 in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Blues Music Awards.
She died June 3 at age 80 shortly after having surgery because of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Another visitation will be held today afternoon also at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters, followed by her funeral with a eulogy to be delivered by the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

NEW ORLEANS BLUES SOCIETY
VOODOO BLUES KREWE (NEW ORLEANS BLUES SOCIETY)
The VooDoo Blues Krewe is gearing up for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January by staging events now in preparation for it. First, tomorrow night (Sat, June 13) the VDBK BLUES 'N' BREWS event, a benefit performance by three New Orleans blues bands and great guest artists throughout the night.
30 X 90 (all female blues band who took their name from New Orleans longitude/latitude coordinates) kicks off the evening at 6pm, followed by Lil' Red & Big Bad. The night will close with the Danny Alexander Blues Band. Sitting in will be Jumpin' Johnny Sansone (Poor Man's Paradise), Ed Wills, and others! The $5 admission charge will go directly to fund the New Orleans VooDoo Blues Challenge this fall (Sep 19-Oct 10) and sponsorship of our local winner at the International Blues Challenge. Our Platinum Sponsor, NOLA Brewing, is providing free craft beer and we'll have great door prizes. McGuire's Grill & Pub (869 Magazine) was kind enough to provide the venue. If you're in the area (live here, or visiting), c'mon out and support our Society and our great local blues players.
