Pedro Almodvar -- In the News!

Pedro Almodvar wins the 2006 Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts

Pedro Almodvar (centre) during the presentation of the film with Carmen Maura (left) and Penlope Cruz (right) (Photo credit: EFE).

Spanish film maker, Pedro Almodvar, has today been named as the winner of the 2006 Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. The jury said they have rewarded the Manchego film director because of the integration of his roots, which are our roots, in a society of a planet on the edge of a nervous breakdown making a reference to one of his most famous films. The mastery and sincerity of his work was also praised, along with the joy and vitality of his scripts.

Pedro Almodvar was given the news before heading to Cannes, where his latest work Volver, staring Penelope Cruz, is taking part in the Film Festival. Pedro Almodvar was chosen in the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts ahead of other finalists this year, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Violinist Anne Sophie Mutter and the Architect Tadao Ando. The award is worth 50,000 .

AND, THIS JUST IN:
Rave reviews for Almodvar latest at Cannes

Pedro Almodvars latest film, 'Volver', got a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival today, the first in this years festival, and the rave reviews have started to flow.

Barbara Scharrer, from the Chicago Post described the film as the most authentic Almodvar yet, and his film to contains much sentiment.

Many consider 'Volver' now to be favourite to win the coveted Golden Palm award.

Antonio Canales Video

Canales gives an inspiring impromptu bulerias. Cristie sings and dances flamenco in the academy of Antonio Canales. Cristie was a professional flamenco dancer before she did castings for operacion triunfo in 2002.

Canales Video from "VENGO"

Tony Gatlifs Vengo featuring a host of artists, and a wonderful brooding Antonio Canales! Rumba Anyone? This scene is called 'A Night in Andalusia'.

For Algerian-born gypsy filmmaker Tony Gatlif's, 'Vengo' is a vision so pure you can almost feel the flamenco beats working their way through your blood. Gatlif's music is a life force, as we`ve seen in his previous films "Latcho Drom" and "Gadjo Dilo"..... the same is true of his latest, "Vengo". Celebrating the flamenco of Andalusia "Vengo" is really a presentation of musical events - terrific musical events - linked by the drama of a blood feud.

I believe this is the gypsy flamenco band Las Cigalas.

GIPSY KINGS
Over the years, the Gipsy Kings' trademark sound of vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals has been highlighted by a consistent winning streak in the U.S., where the group is the biggest selling French act ever. With more than fourteen albums sold worldwide, such as the gold certified Mosaique and The Very Best of Gipsy Kings, the gitane speaking group had provided a steady stream of hits to Billboard's world music, Latin and pop charts. Gipsy Kings is hoping to carry the tradition into the future with their most recent Grammy nominated acoustic release, Roots- an album that brings their music back to their Flamenco origins.

WHO WE ARE!

The above reflects my on-going passion for flamenco music, song, and dance. We strive to bring you the most current information in our flamenco community local, national, and internationally.

In addition to the listing of events above, we also produce shows and host workshops for some of the best flamenco artists in Spain, and the United States. Here is a short outline of who we are.

VIDA FLAMENCA has dedicated itself to advancing and preserving the Spanish dance and music tradition. Our programming emphasizes increased awareness of Spanish culture, while maintaining a high level of artistry in presenting authentic dance and music of Spain. We draw from a select group of artists, internationally and here in the United States. Since the company's inception, VIDA FLAMENCA has become the premiere calling card for flamenco artists in Los Angeles. In addition to providing this free community service of up-to-date information (via these email newsletters) on local, national and international events including educational flamenco forums, we also arrange performances for corporate events, private parties, and theatrical venues and continue to host workshops for visiting artists such as: Cristbal Reyes (Madrid) choreographer for Joaqun Corts, just recently as part of the 2000 Academy Awards presentation choreographed by Reyes and Debbie Allen; Domingo Ortega (Madrid); Antonio Granjero (Jerez); Canito and Alegria Suarez (Sevilla); Maria Juncal (Madrid); Silvia Duran (Tel Aviv), Maribel Herrera, Claudio Arias, (Buenos Aires); Yaelisa (San Francisco); La Tania (San Francisco); and La Conja (New York City).

Over the past several years, VIDA FLAMENCA has worked with NBC Studios (NBC children's programming), Oasis Bar & Restaurant, Tzali's Food & Wine Group, NOHO Theater & Arts Festival, the Nosotros (Latino Emmy) Awards Show rewarding excellence in the Latino Film and Television industry, and numerous private and corporate events.

The 2003 co-production of Ay! Flamenco at the Ford Amphitheatre with Rodri Entertainment was the company's first foray into producing flamenco shows on a large scale in a major 1,200-seat venue. The show was a great success and thus prompted a much larger production in October 2004, bringing an entire 12-member company from Spain in the premier original production of "Orfeo," featuring Compaa Domingo Ortega. This acclaimed production of the classic Greek myth spins this heart-breaking tale of love and lose through the timelessness of Flamenco. Additionally, in 2005, Ortega and company returned to Los Angeles for the closing night performance for the 2005 World Music Institute as part of UNESCO hosted by the city of Los Angeles' Cultural Affairs Department and Major Antonio Villaraigosa. Packed workshops followed that included dancers Domingo Ortega (Jerez), and La Tania (Sevilla/San Francisco); singer Javier Riquena (Malaga), and guitarist Jorge Rodriguez (Barcelona). We look forward to future projects, and to continue to bring you the best in flamenco entertainment.

For further information including booking please contact
beth@vidaflamenca.com or call 213-713.4719.
We pride ourselves in tailoring flamenco performances to your individual needs.
