LEAF Cultural Vignette: Catch the Kiyoshi Nagata Japanese Drummers from 7:30-8:30pm in Eden Hall on Friday, October 19 and from 5-6pm on the Main Stage on Saturday, October 20. The taiko has played an invaluable role in the life and culture of the Japanese people for thousands of years. In ancient times, the taiko was sounded to determine village boundaries and to send messages such as signaling the time. Its deep, thunderous reverberations also made it the perfect instrument to communicate with the Shinto gods during festival time to pray for rain and a bountiful harvest as well as to scare away evil spirits harmful to the crops. Festival Finale with Doc Watson the Legendary NC-born guitarist and singer and his grandson Richard Watson as Hills Of Home on Sunday at 3:30pm at the Mainstage. 7-time Grammy winner Doc Watson joins Grammy-winning folk guitarist and claw hammer banjoist David Holt for a musical jamboree of the finest folk music. Watson’s mountain roots seamlessly blend with bluegrass, country, gospel and blues, and he possesses a mastery of instrument and voice that strikes awe in the listener.
