"El Cid" Founder Clark Allen Passes in Los Angeles
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 14, 1925, Clark Allen died of respiratory failure at the age of 82 in Los Angeles on January 20th. A musician and musicologist, an artist, sculptor, model-maker, and nautical historian, an actor, linguist, and world traveler, Clark was endlessly creative, a larger-than-life figure who will be greatly missed. He and his former wife and lifelong friend, actress and dancer Margarita Cordova, lived and studied in Granada, Spain, for more than a year, before returning to Los Angeles, where they founded and entertained at El Cid, the renowned flamenco club, for more than 18 years. In 1972, Clark was shot during a robbery at El Cid, and his survival, after more than a year in the hospital, amazed his doctors. The late Vincent Price began collecting his paintings in the 60s, even as Clark toured with Carl Sandburg and Bette Davis in “The World of Carl Sandburg,” as well as appearing in Marlon Brando’s “One Eyed Jacks” and several episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and “Peter Gunn.” Clark continued to perform locally until recently, singing folk songs in several languages and then doing pencil and charcoal sketches of people in his audience. Clark is survived by his sister, Janet Martin, of Prescott Arizona. His daughter Angela, an artist, and son David, a musician, as well as his two grandsons, live in London, England. A private family memorial will be held this weekend.

The group's founder, Raul Rodriguez, plays the Cuban tres (which is like a small guitar, with three sets of double strings), an instrument he discovered after his mother, the vocalist Martirio, was given one after performing in Cuba with Compay Segundo, lead singer of the Buena Vista Social Club.

OUR COMMUNITY NEWS - Tango Events Listed at End!
Announcements from our local, national, and international flamenco communities!
******* Photo: Courtesy Gilles Larrain. El Farruco y Carmen Segura, 1983. © Gilles Larrain.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Gilles Larrain went on a two-week trip to Andalusia in 1983 to photograph flamenco for GEO magazine. He ended up staying for two months in the attic of La Carboneria a flamenco venue in Sevilla as guest to the owner, Paco Lira, a kind of godfather to the flamenco world. The photos of "Flamenco: Landscapes of its Soul" are the result of Gilles' endless nights at the Carboneria and his trips with Paco to the homes of some of flamenco's legendary families. Others were taken at Gilles' SOHO studio where he continues to photograph flamenco artists that come to New York. Gilles' one-of-a-kind gelatin silver prints document major contemporary flamenco artists off stage in intimate settings. His photos capture the privileged studio moment and explore the visual aesthetics of flamenco that reflect the austere beauty of the Andalusian landscape.
Over the years Gilles has photographed many legends from our flamenco community. In the coming months we will be presenting an ongoing series of photographs from Mr. Larrain's "Flamenco" series. I am honored to be able to present extraordinary work from this highly regarded series.
