Since the evolution of juju music in Nigeria in the thirties no exponent has made a more lasting impact in the genre than King Sunny Ade. As a singer, composer and guitarist, he has succeeded over the years in taking this Nigerian social music type to international heights. Ade came on the scene in 1966 following his induction as a samba player in a small group led by showman and comedian Baba Sala, known in real life as Moses Olaiya. And with his own ten-piece band, the Green Spots, Ade made his first record in 1967, playing the guitar solos himself. He however, blazed into prominence a year after with a hit single in praise of Stationery Stores football club which carved him a gold disc as a result of its massive sales. Since then Ade has been in the limelight.

MARLEY COFFEE
Rohan Marley is pleased to announce the launch of Marley Coffee
(www.marleycoffee.com), a certified organic coffee brand cultivated from the Marley family farm in Jamaica.

The brainchild of long time friends Rohan Marley and Shane Whittle, the company is a labor of love and a tribute to Rohan's father, Bob Marley. "My father came from the farmland in Nine Mile. There, he learned a deep respect for nature and humanity; a respect that helped guide his life and ours. He said he would return to the farm one day. That was his dream," said Rohan.

Bob Marley's dream has now become a reality, which is very much alive in the company's core philosophy ITAL, meaning for all things Pure, True and Vital. ITAL is embodied in the ethical treatment of the companys' farm workers on the Marley Coffee farm to the sustainable cultivation of coffee trees. Additionally, proceeds from the sale of the coffee will go to the Marley Coffee Foundation, which helps youth soccer programs in rural coffee growing regions of Jamaica.

All of the companys' coffee is certified organic, with the beans sourced from the highest Class One Specialty grade. Additionally, each bag has Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, a coffee bean picked by hand and known for its distinctive floral bouquet, rich body and smooth taste. The 5 coffee blends offered are: Mystic Morning Wake Up Coffee Medium Roast, Simmer Down Organic Swiss Water Decaf, One Love Organic Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Lively Up! Organic 5 Bean Espresso Blend and Jammin Java Organic Bold Full City Roast.

Marley Coffee is currently available for purchase online at www.marleycoffee.com. Marley and Whittle also recently opened a Canadian facility for international distribution and a U.S. distribution center in Los Angeles was opened to better serve domestic customers.

CHEF MAYRA’S REASONS TO BUY LOCAL PRODUCE
Why buy local?
There are countless reasons why buying local food is both rewarding and delicious, including enjoying the taste of fresh food, improved health and nutrition, environmental stewardship, support for family farms and rural communities, and ensuring animal welfare.

There is also significant peace of mind in knowing where our food comes from. One of the biggest benefits to buying food locally is having someone to answer questions about how it was grown and raised. What goes into that loaf of bread? Can we be certain that the hog that is now bacon lived a life without suffering? How do we know those jalapeños are salmonella free?

Another significant reason to buy local is to keep food miles to a minimum. "Food miles" refer to the distance a food item travels from the farm to your home. The food miles for items in the grocery store are, on average, 27 times higher than the food miles for goods bought from local sources.

In the U.S., the average grocery store's produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator. About 40% of our fruit is produced overseas and, even though broccoli is grown all over the country, the broccoli we buy at the supermarket travels an average of 1,800 miles to get there. Notably, nine percent of our red meat comes from foreign countries, some as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Our food is trucked across the country, hauled in freighter ships over oceans, and flown around the world. A tremendous amount of fossil fuel is burned to transport foods such long distances, releasing carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter and other pollutants that contribute to global climate change, acid rain, smog and air and sea pollution. The refrigeration required to keep our fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meats from spoiling during their long journeys burn up even more fossil fuel. In contrast, local and regional food systems produce 17 times less CO2.

Economics of buying local
The significant difficulties of earning a living wage as a farmer are often masked by headlines about subsidies and record high crop prices. In reality, farmers are earning less producing crops these days than they did in 1969, despite the fact that American farmers have almost doubled productivity over the past four decades. Farmers aren't just earning less, current prices do not even cover the cost of production. Until just recently the difference between farm income nationwide and what it cost to grow and raise American crops could be counted in the billions. To make ends meet, and often to get health insurance, more than half of American farmers work a second off-farm job.

Buying locally or directly from farmers can dramatically increase a farmer's income. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardener's Association published a study that demonstrates what would happen if consumers shifted 1% of their purchasing power to buy locally grown products: farmers would see a gain of 5% in their income. Even better, buying direct from a farmer sends 90% of those food dollars back to the farm. Increasing farm income means more money can be spent locally by the farmer to run their business and home, helping keep the local economy alive.

Annually, Americans consume more than $600 billion in food. In most communities today food is purchased entirely at a grocery store or market, with only about 7% of local food dollars staying in the community. The other 93% of the modern food dollar travels to pay processors, packagers, distributors, wholesalers, truckers and the rest of the infrastructure that a global food system demands, a stark comparison to 40% in 1910 by contrast, 40% of food dollars spend remained in the local economy. When more food dollars stay in the community, through buying local, they are transformed into thriving main streets and local jobs.

If you can't buy local...
While some people may enjoy the challenge of an all-local diet, it doesn't work for everyone. If products are not available locally or regionally, look for items produced in the United States. Remember—local means as close to home as possible, in some cases that may mean oranges from California or Florida, rather than Chile or Israel.

When shopping for more exotic ingredients like chocolate, coffee or bananas, look for products labeled "Fair Trade" or "Rain forest Alliance Certified." The fair trade label means that farmers and farm workers in developing nations receive a fair price for their product, work directly with buyers, and prioritize sustainable farming methods without forced child labor and the use of a dozen of the most harmful pesticides. To be fair trade certified, products must be grown by small-scale producers who are able organize themselves in either cooperatives or unions. Fair trade products and companies are certified by independent third parties like Trans Fair USA or Fair Trade Labeling Organization International. Companies selling fair trade products have also shown commitment to helping the farmers they work with develop long-term sustainable communities and businesses.

Rain forest Alliance labeling follows standards set by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN, formally known as the Conservation Agriculture Network) that are designed to promote tropical conservation. Products with this label are grown with environmentally responsible management practices including integrated pest and disease management, soil and water conservation. This standard also includes requirements for fair labor practices and good community relations. The Rain forest Alliance Certified label standards have been tailored to crops in specific regions. The standards specify that waterways must be protected with buffer zones and monitored for contamination. Workers must be paid minimum wage and have the right to organize.

Both of these labels are third-party certified, which means that independent inspectors ensure farmers' compliance. Since products like coffee and chocolate are difficult to grow in the United States, labels like these can be a good alternative to buying locally.

What you can do:
  • Join the growing movement of consumers around the world who are making a little extra effort to find food raised nearby. If you're not sure how to find them, just enter your zip code into the Eat Well Guide.
  • Start small and don't expect to change all your eating habits overnight Commit to purchasing one thing locally each week or each month. Once you see how easy it is and you enjoy the great taste, you'll surely go back for more!
  • Community supported agriculture (CSA) programs provides a direct link between local farmers and consumers. Each season, members purchase a share of a farmer's crop before it's planted. This allows the farmer to pay for seed, water and equipment upfront, so s/he is less reliant on banks and loans. Each week during the harvest time, usually June through October, the farmer delivers great tasting, healthy food to the members at pre-determined locations. In some instances, members pick up their share directly from the farm.To find a CSA program in your area, visit the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center. If you can't find a CSA program in your area, start one! Just Food, a nonprofit organization based in New York City, helps start CSA programs in all five boroughs.
  • Farmers' markets are a great way to buy local where you can ask the farmer how the food was raised and produced.

Vanguard Communications, a public relations firm in Washington DC, developed a Buy Local Challenge. Visit their Buy Local Challenge for ideas on what you can do.

  • Growing your own food! Whether it's a plot in your backyard or a small window herb garden, growing your own food is a richly rewarding experience. Many towns have gardening classes, but it's easy to simply buy some seeds and experiment. The National Gardening Association has tips on getting started.( Ask me if you live in Las Vegas, Nevada)
  • If you live in an urban area and don't have land to plant on, you can often find community gardens that offer plots in exchange for some volunteer time. Visit the American Community Gardening Association for more information. And once you grow all that great food, learn how to can, freeze or preserve it.

BUZZROCK WARRIOR: JAHDAN BLAKKAMOORE
Gold Dust has teamed up with the Brooklyn-based Dutty Artz crew to present the debut album Buzzrock Warrior from Jahdan Blakkamoore.  A vocalist extraordinaire, Jahdan is as comfortable over classic roots-style reggae as he is over cutting edge dancehall and tropical dubstep riddims.  Hip-Hop heads might recognize the Boot Camp affiliate from his verse on Smiff N Wessun's "Sound Bwoy Burreill."

The album brings together many of the Dutty Artz crew's interests including dancehall, digital cumbia, grime,dubstep and other delicious tropical sounds. Jahdan is in fine form throughout singing and chatting over riddims from diverse producers including homegrown tunes by Matt Shadetek and DJ/Rupture, ragga techno dons Modeselektor, grime super hero Jammer, Zizek crew's Chancha via Circuito and globe trotter Maga Bo. Dutty Artz extended family 77Klash appears twice on guest vocal duties and provides the gorgeous uncategorizable beat for "She Said" while top Grime boy Durrty Goodz goes in hard with JD on "Mesmerized" and Abena Koomson joins in to bring us slowly down on closer "Rise Again."

For an early taste of the vibes check out "The General," out now on 12" with banging dubstep remixes by Noah D. and Marcus Visionary and also look for Jahdan's appearance on Diplo and Switch's highly anticipated Major Lazer project, the roots flavored "Cash Flow," available June 16th.

"Buzzrock is a wobbly, world-cognizant take on Caribbean-rooted dance music and clacky digital cumbia that possesses all of dubstep’s buzzy bass lines but none of its conventions, with a cosmopolitan elegance provided by Blakkamoore’s gorgeous tenor and meticulous rapidfire chatting skills."

CHERINE ANDERSON ON TOUR THIS SUMMER!
photo by Todd Cooper
Singer/Actress Cherine Anderson will head out on an 11 week world tour beginning June 20th. We caught up briefly with the singer in Kingston, Jamaica. Even in the current economical climate, Anderson has been blessed with one of the busiest schedules for the summer. Speaking about her upcoming tour the East Kingston beauty says with her usual smile, "I love performing, so I am giving thanks for all the blessings and opportunities to promote my music and my new EP The Introduction-Dubstyle."  With her single 'Shine on Jamaica' topping two international reggae charts for four weeks in a row and rising on other reggae charts, Anderson feels grateful for the worldwide exposure and the opportunity to take her Dancehall Soul sound and her Jamaican culture to new audiences.

Anderson starts her summer with solo shows in June before heading out on a European tour which will take her to multiple cities in Belgium, Italy, France, UK, Germany, Ireland, Holland and Switzerland.  On returning to North America she again joins Michael Franti  Spearhead and the rock band The Counting Crows on an eight week US tour which will play to audiences in theatres and mid sized arenas.  Anderson's manager Patrick Lindsay states, "We are committed to presenting Cherine's talent to diversified audiences across the world. VERMONT MUSIC FESTIVAL THE MANIFESTIVUS: A FUN-FILLED, AFFORDABLE FAMILY WEEKEND JULY 17-19
Fans Of All Ages To Hear Toubab Krewe, Oumou Sangaré, Barrington Levy, Midnite, Black Sheep and Earle "Chinna" Smith And Enjoy Outdoor Fun on 93 Rustic Acres

Brother and sister David and Jaime Pransky grew up on a family farm in Cabot, Vermont (60 miles east of Burlington), where their mother Judy founded the Laughing Turtle summer camp 30 years ago. So when the Pranskys first started a summer event on the farm called Festivus for the Restivus that featured Bonnaroo favorites Toubab Krewe, in which David plays bass, it was natural that they'd include children.

Seven years later, Festivus, now called The Manifestivus, will run for three days and two nights July 17-19, and includes legendary performers from all over the world: Toubab Krewe (called a "distinctive, remarkable fusion" of West African traditional music and American rock by Billboard); Mali's Oumou Sangaré (who The New York Times dubbed "a beacon -- incandescent, steadfast and reassuring"), Jamaica's chart-topping dancehall star Barrington Levy, St. Croix's critically acclaimed Midnite, New York City's old-school alternative hip-hop duo Black Sheep (the first hip-hop act to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno), the Jamaican guitarist Earle "Chinna" Smith, who has played with both Bob and Ziggy Marley, Boston's beloved nu-jazz/ funk/ hip hop Jazz Criminals and a Saturday night afterparty led by laptop remix pioneer DJ Holla.

The festival is entirely homegrown, and for the Pranskys and producing partner Carlo Rovetto, that means that children are always part of the mix. Of the 1500 Festivus-goers in 2008, more than 200 were under the age of 13.

Kids 12 and under attend the festival free when accompanied by one or more adults, and there are many activities besides the performances families can enjoy together, such as workshops in the music of Africa and the Caribbean, Yoga in the Woods, art classes and a puppet theater.

There'll be lots of outdoor fun too, including wagon rides and hikes through the woods, a basketball court, a bubble-blowing extravaganza and a bouncy house. There's a scenic pond with a sand beach, a shallow, roped-off kids area and changing rooms, as well as water and sand toys, life jackets and small boats. The property also offers a mini water park with a pool, water slides and a lifeguard.

A designated quiet camping area will be available, as will childcare, massage, medical care, security, authentic African and Ital food, and water. An energy-saving sound system and LED lights use only a fraction of the power used at most festivals. Families with children under 3 can request free onsite parking (availability limited).

Pre-sale weekend tickets are available now for just $65 per adult for a
limited time, as are VIP packages and single-night tickets, at
http://www.themanifestivus.com

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Sabu School
in Conakry, Guinea, a children's school for Sierra Leone refugees.

Jaime Pransky, mother of four-year-old Eden Rose, says of The Manifestivus family-centric approach: "For me, a festival can be no other way. A family vibe is always the most happy, joyful and holistic. We've worked hard to bring families together to provide creative exposure to world culture."

THE ITALS "LET DEM TALK"! Also Out On Tour, GIANT PANDA GUERILLA DUB SQUAD
Following the release of the retrospective “Ina Dis Ya Time” on VP Records last winter, The Itals have come back strong with an all new set of uptempo tunes on “Let Dem Talk,” featuring the finest studio musicians in Jamaica.

The album opens with the ska-liciously tongue-in-cheek It’s Not Easy, wherein lead singer Keith Porter confides he didn’t get his freedom today, he had to put it on layaway.  Who Reign is vintage Itals, praising the Father inna stately style. The album’s title track states, “let dem talk, let dem scandal my name”, a topical number about the endless empty talk that fuels the nightly news as well as the local sussa sussa.

Two Stingray Records’ dub rhythms are artfully adapted, first in Chill Out, an atmospheric plea to stop the violence so prevalent in Jamaica and around the world today, and then So Many Times explores the search for true love and peace of mind, rendered with a healthy dose of Itals’ harmonies.

The album’s first single, My Way High Way, bounces along before snaring you with it’s catchy hook line, showcasing Mr. Porter’s smooth vocals. There For Me is an inspirational anthem crafted with strong vocal harmonies, while Anything is one of two tracks co-produced by Tad Dawkins, characterized by tight syncopated rhythms and heartfelt vocals.Dawkins’ Hard Drugs rhythm reappears on No Mercy, where those spine-tingling Itals harmonies take front stage again, urging the listener to “meekly wait and murmur not” while waiting for the meek to grow strong.

True Love and It’s You are unabashed love songs, and don’t we all enjoy a good romantic story? This is lovers’ rock at its finest, with the emphasis on rock.  Also rocking, All Is Vanity teaches the lesson that “the unexpected happens every day, even when you pray.”

The album closes with a bouncing instrumental version of It’s Not Easy, leaving the listener tapping a foot and humming along with the horn parts long after it ends.  Available on iTunes and through  ebreggae.com

TO STOP HUMAN CRUELTY TOWARDS ANIMALS
Hear our humble prayer, O God,
for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for animals that are overworked,
underfed and cruelly treated;
for all wistful creatures in captivity
that beat their wings against bars;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted
or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.
