Winter draws to a close as spring’s fragrant vitality beckons us. The days are longer now, due to the approaching Spring Equinox as well as Daylight Savings Time beginning on March 14. Seeds of rebirth, nurtured deep within Mother Earth, begin to burst forth. This is the month to initiate your plans, and begin taking action based on insights received in winter’s darkness.
"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like lamb." This familiar adage serves as a reminder. The annual transition from winter to spring brings uncertainty and volatility in weather patterns, as well as extremes in emotional and physical health. Spring Equinox lights up the month, marking the Sun’s transition from the zodiac sign of Pisces to Aries on March 20. It takes the trusting release of Pisces, AND the compelling force of Aries to embrace and utilize the cosmic trends of March.
The shift from Pisces to Aries is unmistakable as it takes place over the month. Pisces accentuates the need for release from limitations, while Aries paves the way for new developments. March prepares us for change within the larger 84 year orbit of Uranus. 2010 is a pivotal year as Uranus completes its sojourn in Pisces and prepares to enter Aries (May 27, 2010). Feel it, flow with it. Outworn habits, concepts and beliefs are no longer relevant. This is a great opportunity to allow the love of existence to work on us, and remake our lives more in keeping with the evolutionary flow. Mars, the planet of action, completes a retrograde cycle on March 10. This is very good news in light of recent months. Most of us have experienced lack of motivation, frustration and delay in some form. From extreme weather to Earth’s rumbling quakes, Mars has been not happy in retrograde motion since December 20. In fact, it may take through mid-May to sort things out. But, retrograde phases are essential in that we have a chance to review all forward activity. Obstacles and detours clarify the path, refine our motives, strengthen our resolve. What does this mean to you? What areas of your life have been shaken to the core, melted and dissolved in fire of Mars? The firm, insistent call of Mars bears forth as inner resolve, your springboard into a new cycle of action.
It may be helpful to recall the effects of Saturn’s square to Pluto on January 31, 2010. This is a long term planetary alignment in effect for most of the year. Consider any conflicts, disturbances or obsessions that surfaced, particularly in the area of relationships, career and long term financial security. Saturn in Libra wants to play nice, and bridge the gap of misunderstanding with communication despite differences in opinion. Pluto in Capricorn points to bottom line reality, an essential component in all discussion. But this planetary pair tends to project fear and lack into the future, and muddy the waters of any real solution. Of course, nowhere is this more evident then in the national political debate. Overall, these planets insist on change as structures breakdown and lose their relevance and usefulness.
The dynamics of this alignment are intensified as Sun, Mercury and Venus enter Aries and activate this square ( March 8 - 11, 16 - 25). They add reactivity and impulsiveness to conditions that have been in stalemate, or on the back burner. Circumstances give people permission to pull out all stops on whatever it takes to move forward. In many areas of our personal and collective experience, we will see people impulsively force their personal agendas on others without thought of consequences.
Especially be aware of communication as a variety of voices, internal and external, clamor for attention. Conflicts emerge between what is perceived as personal autonomy, responsibility to others, integrity and accountability. On one hand, there is a insistent need to assert and take action. On the other hand, previous commitments appear obligatory and stand in the way of action. This month takes patience as well as courage and resilience. Life can be messy down here in the karmic trenches of cause and effect.
The New Moon on March 15th helps to break the gridlock. Suddenly, emphatically, extraordinarily . . . new developments spring forth. This lunation points to spiritual and humanitarian consciousness interceding on our behalf. It is simply a matter of tuning in, and being available for insight. For some people the vision may be disturbing, because it insists on change. But when humanity is backed against the wall, any clarity of direction is welcome. The potency of this New Moon combines Sun, Moon, Mercury and Uranus at 25-26 degrees of Pisces. Let’s not forget, Uranus is a planetary wild card, surprising us with solutions to problems that seem impossible to solve.
The Full Moon on March 29 serves to bring many issues to a head. In fact, it may take the better part of March for clarity to emerge. Taking all into consideration, March is a volatile, game changing month. The winds of change blow freely, one moment stinging and unforgiving, the other moment, soft and gentle.
