THE 24rd EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO

Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

Seated at his humble throne, Cudjoe began the festivities by passing a bottle of white rum around to honor their new visitors. This potent drink was a favorite among the Maroons and without a doubt, the strongest of all the rums in Jamaica.
A moment later, dinner was served. The McIntosh were surprised by the lavish meal prepared in their honor. The Maroons had prepared several wild boars, letting them roasted all day over a barbecue made of pits of hot stones. The feast included land crabs and pigeons as well as jerk chicken and fish, meat seasoned with a multi-spice mixture that was heavy on pimento and roasted slowly over a hardwood fire. They also prepared bowls of rice and a savory stew of fowl, with excessive seasoning and an assortment of exotic fruits and vegetables, including ackee, the national fruit of Jamaica.

After dinner, the festivities culminated into a dramatic ceremonial event known as the war and treaty dance. This wild, ceremonial dance, signaled by the sound of the abeng horn, mimicked a mock fight. With amazing agility, the men of the village bounded into action, displaying their great abilities for running, leaping, jumping. Slender yet muscular in stature, the warriors moved frantically around the Kindah, each one of them joining in a most terrifying warhoop while adding violent gestures and contortions to their movements. This technique proved successful for the Maroons when fighting against their enemies. By throwing themselves into unpredictable gestures and constantly tumbling over and over, they appeared to be shifting in their place. This helped them elude their enemies, making them a constant moving target instead of a sitting duck.

The men ended their tribal dance by advancing towards Cudjoe, displaying wild and warlike gestures in their looks while keeping their machetes raised high above their heads as if to attack. At the last possible second, they suddenly lowered their weapons and piled them up in heaps at Cudjoe’s feet before kneeling before him in unison. They kept their heads bowed against the earth and their eyes averted from their village chief. This was a display of respect to their leader and in rememberance of their historical victory over the British in the signing of their peace treaty in 1738.
As the festivities wounded down, several boys approached Drew, some were shirtless, most of them barefoot. Cudjoe watched the boys from a distance. One of the boys was Cuffee, Drew vaguely remembered him from the visit to his home in Mo’Bay.

“Will you come and listen to stories of Anansi with us?” Cubbenah asked.
Drew, too stunned to speak, turned to his mother and father.
“It’s okay, Drew,” Philip said. “You go and joined them.”
“Have fun, Drew.” Maria added.
Drew glanced up at the two boys and accepted their invitation.
As the boys disappeared into the village, Cudjoe suddenly rose to his feet, a move which surprised Philip and Maria.
“Come with me,” Cudjoe motioned with his hand. “There’s something I must show you.”

CHEF MAYRA - HEALTH BENEFITS OF JUICING
If you are looking for an easy and effective way to do something good for you body, consider the health benefits of juicing. Juicing is preparing and drinking fruit and vegetable juices, and the many health benefits of juicing far exceed those of eating solid fruits and vegetables.

For one thing, the body can quickly absorb larger amounts of nutrients from juices than from solid foods because the process of digestion that is necessary when you eat whole foods is bypassed. Raw fruits and vegetables contain many substances that enhance health, and juicing benefits the body by providing the most concentrated and readily absorbed source of these substances.

Another one of the major health benefits of juicing is that it is an easy way to get beneficial enzymes, which are primarily found in raw foods, into the body. Enzymes in fresh fruits and vegetables have the vital role of converting food into body tissue and energy. Enzymes are also involved in metabolism, so one of the more valuable health benefits of juicing is that it can increase metabolic rate.

Juicing also ensures that the body is getting sufficient amounts of phytochemicals, substances in plants that are considered among the most powerful ways to fight disease. While most people do not eat enough raw fruits and vegetables to obtain the amount of phytochemicals that would make a difference, it is relatively easy to drink enough juice to obtain sufficient amounts of these powerful nutrients. In addition, antioxidants and other immune enhancing properties are concentrated in juices.

Juicing can therefore help to accelerate recovery from illness. In fact, juicing with specific combinations of fruits or vegetables can target particular conditions and improve or alleviate symptoms.

Whip up any of these recipes anytime to help flush toxins out of your system and brighten up your skin—or as part of the one-day, two-day or three-day

STEVIE FACE FOR UPRISING MUSIC FESTIVAL - ENGLAND
Brixton 02 comes alive on June 19th 2010, when Reggae Lovers Rock artist Stevie Face hit the stage alongside veterans Coco Tea, Barrington Levy and Freddie McGregor in London, England.  The show which is billed ‘The Reggae event of 2010,’ is the inaugural launch of the annual Uprising Music Festival.

Stevie Face has won favour with various promoters throughout the UK and Europe since the release of his chart topping hit single “Tell it like it is” followed by his critically acclaimed top selling album of the same name. The album was voted, “Best Reggae Album” in the UK and continues to be a top seller there as well as in several territories worldwide. After making an impressive first performance at Brixton 02 in February 2009, Stevie has not been to the UK since and instead opted to continue promoting his album.

One year later, the anticipation for his return has heightened and Stevie Face is confident that his UK fans are in for a treat he says, “The timing could not have been better and allows for a solid delivery of my album that the fans so obviously approve of.”

News out of London is that the buzz from the advertisement of the event has sent fans young and old scurrying to get tickets to this monumental event. On the other hand, Stevie Face’s fans are said to be excited about seeing this sensational artist, as many were disappointed that he was not invited to a Valentine Day showcase held earlier in the year especially after having such a big album released in the UK.  Face has this to say to his fans, “the idea is to give a performance my fans will never forget and I pledge to pull out all the stops to ensure that each and every one gets their monies worth.”

NESBETH
(Kingston, Jamaica) Nesbeth gets ready to launch “The Nesbeth Outreach” which will be a continous project that is designed to lend a helping hand to designated charitable organizations throughout Kingston.  The first project will be put in motion in his hometown, Arnette Gardens undertaking some of the most pressing needs of the Charlie Smith Comprehensive High school in August.  His concerns for this particular school derived from a conversation he had with the Principal, Mr. Dennis Kelly whom he paid a visit to discuss renting the schools compound for a children treat.  Nesbeth was particularly impressed with Mr. Kelly’s hopes and dream for the future of Charlie Smith Comprehensive School despite the challenges encountered daily and the difference in Students personality and upbringing in a volatile community.

The Nesbeth Outreach will also be targeting elderly folks in Arnette Gardens.  Plans are already underway for a “Health Care Day” where doctors, nurses and/or Health Care professionals is expected to visit “some of the older folks and do blood pressure checks, sugar, heart tests and common illnesses,” say Nesbeth.  As time progresses and for the future, Nesbeth intends to render his assistance in this manner with hope of adopting an institution emulating his fellow artist/musician Orville ‘Shaggy’ Burrell. Nesbeth recently returned to the island from the Bahamas where he performed alongside Gyptian, Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Etana and Pamputae.  Nesbeth’s “Drive By” single has hit another music chart in Kenya, “Junior Dread Top 40 Reggae” coming in at number 14.

Highlights!  The demand for Scratchie B to perform in Canada has grown considerably and he is now scheduled for a series of events there over the next month.  Scratchie B is also booked to return to England for the second time since the start of the year where he will perform in Bristol, Leicester and at the Stratford Rex in London.

THE 17TH ANNUAL SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL WELCOMES DON CARLOS AND KORA
On June 18, 19, & 20, 2010  Mendocino county welcomes the 17th annual  Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (SNWMF)

Created  as an annual summer solstice and world peace celebration, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival has been called "life changing" for many of its regular attendees the majority of which come as campers, committing to a three-day bonanza for the senses. Its name originates from its original festival location in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The event  takes place for the fifth consecutive year at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville, CA.

This year's SNWMF lineup features some of music's greats in world, roots, vintage, dancehall, modern reggae and ska artists and sound system DJ's. Bands are scheduled in tandem on the two stages, and conclude with a  fire dance performance on what is known as the Valley stage, a site that is built from the ground up in the Grandstand area of the fairgrounds. The show's varied offerings for children including music performers a parade, and opportunities for participation in free drum, dance, and yoga sessions throughout the weekend make it possible to for cultural exploration on many levels.

The Village stage and Kidz Zone host Children's educational and multi-cultural entertainment. Sageman Drums workshops take place throughout the weekend and are open to all ages in the Drum Temple.  There is a full program of activities designated for the younger generation with kid performers, Arts & Crafts projects and a daily Kids Parade that will be led by the wonderful Samba Stilt Circus, a troupe of stilt performers.

The festival hosts several non-profit organizations and a diverse of ethnic food vendors from Indian to Ethiopian as well as vegetarian and sustainable raw food vendors.  Crafts in the international bazaar in the village area are curated to present a unique array of items from around the world and a zero waste initiative is vigorously pursued to manage the impact of the festival on the environment.

Select artist information for the festival is featured below, for a full lineup visit www.snwmf.com - see you in June!

Baaba Maal, the great Senegalese World music superstar will make a rare West Coast  appearance on SNWMF '10 as the Friday night headliner.  Baaba Maal has had a long and varied career and his latest recording is entitled Television.  In December 2009, Baaba attended the Climate Change summit in Copenhagen as the climate change ambassador for the Africa Talks Climate initiative.

Don Carlos is a reggae artist whose uplifting reggae music and countenance have inspired crowds for over a quarter century.  Don was born and raised in one of the most deprived regions of Western Kingston, Jamaica, in a district notoriously known as Waterhouse, launching his singing career back in 1973 as one of the original members of the roots vocal group Black Uhuru. Since that time, he has been in demand  as a solo artist on stages around the world. Don's latest release is entitled, Changes.

Barrington Levy is a driving force in reggae music and remains a perennial favorite and one of the most recognizable vocalists in reggae music history.  His latest single, "Watch Dem"  is a collaboration with rap legend Snoop Dogg and recent rap sensation Mims and it is  a version of his song "Murderer" a classic tune with a strong warning against violence.

Alborosie, born Alberto D'Ascola is a reggae artist from Italy, who has resided in Kingston, Jamaica for the past decade. He moved to Jamaica to be close to reggae music's roots and Rastafari culture.  There, he started working as a sound engineer and producer and collaborating with legendary Specialist. Sierra Nevada marks his first summer reggae U.S. festival appearance. Alborosie is touring in celebration of his current release -  Escape from Babylon to the Kingdom of Zion.

Each year the vintage reggae portion of the Sierra Nevada lineup is like another chapter in a "reggae hall of fame" presentation.

This year the Soul Syndicate reunites as a group who were one of the '70's most in demand touring and recording groups.  The festival will feature  original members renowned bassist George "Fully" Fullwood, Tony Chin, original "flyers" style rhythm guitarist and Santa Davis, one of the world's most remarkable drummers.

The Skatalites, the original ska band with close to forty years of instrumental firepower,  Ken Boothe, an artist whose energy and evokes the soul singers of the '60's and Big Youth whose MC-style over classic rhythms set the stage for what is modern hip-hop.

Roots reggae's reigning queen Marcia Griffiths was part of the I-Three's, the harmony trio that supported Bob Marley. She has had an extensive career in her own right with the standard "Electric Slide" as part of her repertoire as well as several other standard reggae chart-toppers.

Johnny Clarke was the new life-blood of the Rockers reggae era, becoming one of Jamaica's biggest artists, inspiring his contemporaries and promoting the message of Rasta both with cultural messages lovers refrains. His music fortified what is possibly the most crucial era of reggae, bringing songs like "Move out of Babylon," "Roots Natty Congo,"  "Rock With Me Baby,"  & "Get Up And Fight For Your Rights" to the massive.

As part of his group The Maytones, Vernon Maytone had his biggest hit with "Money Worries" that was featured on the film soundtrack: Rockers.

Prince Alla has had a career that spans over forty years, and has continued to be in demand in the digital era with roots reggae producers eager to record his unique melancholy singing tone and Rasta messaging.

A consistent principle of Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is the emphasis on the promotion of positive messages. This year the festival presents Playing For Change who've engaged audiences on screen via a PBS special and in the live setting in promotion of their non-profit foundation's release that features global matchings of street musicians and their mainstream counterparts.  Playing For Change traveled around the world to places such as New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland, and, using a mobile recording studio, had local musicians perform the same song, interpreted into their own style that and included contributions from artists such as Keb' Mo', Bono & Manu Chao.

Making their second appearance on the SNWMF stage are Rootz Underground, Jamaica's next generation of musicians whose star continues to rise and are on tour in celebration of their second studio album, Gravity.  The group released a full length live recording as a free download that over 60,000 fans have received to date.  The group employ a dynamic combination of a contemporary roots/rock sound, universal messages and energetic and compelling stage shows to go beyond a niche definition - reaching across reggae boundaries into pop music realms.

Also appearing are Ooklah the Moc from Hawaii, an American band with a huge following that play quality roots-reggae originals. And from Kansas City, comes Queen Makedah whose smoky vocals and roots stylings represent the healing properties of reggae music.

The culture of the soundsystem and the vibrant, prolific nature of Jamaica's reggae industry and music movement are explored each year at the festival through a wide array of recordings.   This year when the sun goes down and the music on the two stages concludes, the fairgrounds' exhibition hall will be filled with the sounds of two of the world's greatest DJ sound systems including perennial SNWMF selector, Rory Gilligan of Kingston's Stone Love Movement and David Rodigan (SKY FM, BBC Radio) of the United Kingdom.  Also mixing in the dancehall will be DJ Ras Kush representing the New York City soundsystem scene.

For sound samples, additions to the artist line up, schedule by day and other information please visit  www.snwmf.com.

FESTIVAL DETAILS:
The event takes place at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds, 14480 Highway 128, Boonville, California, 95415, just 35 minutes West of Ukiah.   A 3-day music ticket is $145 available for purchase through Mail Order and via Paypal.  Camping is for 3 day music ticket holders only and is not included in the 3 day ticket price. Jah Nattoh : : En Buenas Manos
EN BUENAS MANOS” (2009, Reggaeland), first JAH NATTOH official release, means a step forward for spanish reggae productions; it's a new stage, loaded of good vibration, trying to bring Spanish reggae music to a different level, with an accurate production that tries to give place to sound nuances as different as hiphop, r&b, flamenco or pop.

Under soul, r&b, flamenco, dancehall and hiphop influences, and the look of the present moment, "EN BUENAS MANOS" displays a bright musical production which dresses up the emotions of this new voice, with social consciousness and rastafarian confession.

Original riddims and compositions set up by Genís “Genious” Trani, are the perfect complements for the optimal development of JAH NATTOH vocal skills. The CD, has the exceptional vocal contribution of international artists LUTAN FYAH, LYRICSON and local BOCER.
JAH NATTOH, born in Barcelona (Spain), an intelligent troubadour of this 21st century. After three selfpublished demos and songs for compilations like "Reggae Español - vol.1", a long way has been covered in bands like NORTE AFRICA and ARRAIGO, alongside many Spanish soundsystems like ONE BLOOD, around different reggae stages reaching Chile, Mexico, Venezuela and Costa Rica, also being part of line up with international top artists

Jean Paul Sanputu : : We Are Beautiful
His latest CD, Voices from Rwanda, features the distinctive sound of exclusively tradtional Rwandan instruments and showcases Samputu's versatility. From the 12-string inanga, to the amakondera bamboo horns, to ingoma drums built from indigenous materials, Jean Paul brings the beauty and magic of Rwandan music to an international audience for the first time.  His recordings are steeped in the many rich traditions of Rwandan music and dance, and include influences from Uganda, Burundi, and the Congo, as well as pygmy voices and traditions.

Samputu sings in 6 languages (Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Lingala, Luganda, French and English), and in styles ranging from soukous, rhumba and reggae, to traditional Rwandan 5/8, Afrobeat, pygmy and gospel.  He combines unique musical traditions from all regions of Rwanda, among them, Intwatwa, Umushayayo, Imparamba, and Ikinimba.  His dance technique and style demonstrates why UNESCO officially declared Rwandan national dance one of the world's Unique Cultural Heritages.
