SIERRA NEVADA - MENDOCINO COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS - DON'T MISS THIS FESTIVAL!
|
|
Just Added: Gregory Isaacs Jahdann Blakkamore Lloyd Brown Messenjah Selah
In the Kidz Zone: Asheba
In the Dancehall: Comanche Hi-Power
On June 18, 19, & 20, 2010 Mendocino county welcomes the 17th annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (SNWMF). Created as an annual summer solstice and world peace celebration, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival has been called "life changing" for many of its regular attendees the majority of which come as campers, committing to a three-day bonanza for the senses. Its name originates from its original festival location in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The event takes place for the fifth consecutive year at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville, CA.
This year's SNWMF lineup features some of music's greats in world, roots, vintage, dancehall, modern reggae and ska artists and sound system DJ's. Bands are scheduled in tandem on the two stages, and conclude with a fire dance performance on what is known as the Valley stage, a site that is built from the ground up in the Grandstand area of the fairgrounds. The show's varied offerings for children including music performers a parade, and opportunities for participation in free drum, dance, and yoga sessions throughout the weekend make it possible for cultural exploration on many levels.
The Village stage and Kidz Zone host Children's educational and multi-cultural entertainment. Sageman Drums workshops take place throughout the weekend and are open to all ages in the Drum Temple. There is a full program of activities designated for the younger generation with kid performers, Arts & Crafts projects are underway throughout the weekend and a daily Kids Parade that will be led by the wonderful Samba Stilt Circus, a troupe of stilt performers.
The festival hosts several non-profit organizations and a diverse of ethnic food vendors from Indian to Ethiopian as well as vegetarian and sustainable raw food vendors. Crafts in the international bazaar in the village area are curated to present a unique array of items from around the world and a zero waste initiative is vigorously pursued to manage the impact of the festival on the environment.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Baaba Maal, the great Senegalese World music superstar will make a rare West Coast appearance on SNWMF '10 as the Friday night headliner. Baaba Maal has had a long and varied career and his latest recording is entitled Television. In December 2009, Baaba attended the Climate Change summit in Copenhagen as the climate change ambassador for the Africa Talks Climate initiative.
Don Carlos is a reggae artist whose uplifting reggae music and countenance have inspired crowds for over a quarter century. Don was born and raised in one of the most deprived regions of Western Kingston, Jamaica, in a district notoriously known as Waterhouse, launching his singing career back in 1973 as one of the original members of the roots vocal group Black Uhuru. Since that time, he has been in demand as a solo artist on stages around the world. Don's latest release is entitled, Changes.
Barrington Levy is a driving force in reggae music and remains a perennial favorite and one of the most recognizable vocalists in reggae music history. His latest single, "Watch Dem" is a collaboration with rap legend Snoop Dogg and recent rap sensation Mims and it is a version of his song "Murderer" a classic tune with a strong warning against violence.
Alborosie, born Alberto D'Ascola is a reggae artist from Italy, who has resided in Kingston, Jamaica for the past decade. He moved to Jamaica to be close to reggae music's roots and Rastafari culture. There, he started working as a sound engineer and producer and collaborating with the legendary Specialist. Sierra Nevada marks his first summer reggae U.S. festival appearance. Alborosie is touring in celebration of his current release - Escape from Babylon to the Kingdom of Zion. Presenting world music in its varied forms from bands that span the globe is a tradition the festival upholds each year, distinguishing it from any other outdoor festival in North America. As drummer and musical director of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s band, Africa 70 from 1968 to 1979, Tony Allen was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music. Fela once stated that, "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat."
From New Zealand come Fat Freddy's Drop, a seven-piece band whose musical style has been characterized as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Also on the bill are Toubab Krewe, an American instrumental band which fuses the music of Mali with American musical styles (particularly those of the Southern United States). Their new album is entitled: Live at the Orange Peel. From Northern California come Sambadá who preserve the authentic flavor of Brazil's samba tradition, mixing it with funk music, and from Senegal is Youssoupha Sidibe, a master kora player and mystic Sufi chanter. And of Rubblebucket, someone once said that if "Brooklyn and New Orleans had a love child it would be conceived while listening to Rubblebucket." With female lead vocals and hard hitting grooves, festival-goers will hear why this group received the 2009 Boston Music Award for Live Act of the Year.
Adding to the hybrid mix are Rey Fresco, a group from Ventura, California that performs an eclectic mix of rock, reggae, world, soul and Latin music and features a 36 string arpa jarocha Veracruz harp as one of their lead instruments. Each year the vintage reggae portion of the Sierra Nevada lineup is like another chapter in a "reggae hall of fame" presentation. This year the Soul Syndicate reunites as a group who were one of the '70's most in demand touring and recording groups. The festival will feature original members renowned bassist George "Fully" Fullwood, Tony Chin, original "flyers" style rhythm guitarist and Santa Davis, one of the world's most remarkable drummers.
The Skatalites, the original ska band come to SNWMF with close to forty years of instrumental firepower, along with Ken Boothe, an artist whose energy and evokes the soul singers of the '60's and Big Youth whose MC-style over classic rhythms set the stage for what is modern hip-hop.
Roots reggae's reigning queen Marcia Griffiths was part of the I-Threes, the harmony trio that supported Bob Marley. She has had an extensive career in her own right with the standard "Electric Slide" as part of her repertoire as well as several other reggae chart-toppers.
Johnny Clarke was the new life-blood of the Rockers reggae era, becoming one of Jamaica's biggest artists, inspiring his contemporaries and promoting the message of Rasta both with cultural messages and lovers refrains. His music fortified what is possibly the most crucial era of reggae, bringing songs like "Move out of Babylon," "Roots Natty Congo," "Rock With Me Baby," & "Get Up And Fight For Your Rights" to the massive.
As part of his group The Maytones, Vernon Maytone had his biggest hit with "Money Worries" that was featured on the film soundtrack: Rockers. Prince Alla has had a career that spans over forty years, and has continued to be in demand in the digital era with roots reggae producers eager to record his unique melancholy singing tone and Rasta messaging.
A consistent principle of Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is the emphasis on the promotion of positive messages. This year the festival presents Playing For Change who've engaged audiences on screen via a PBS special and in the live setting in promotion of their non-profit foundation's release that features global matchings of street musicians and their mainstream counterparts. Playing For Change traveled around the world to places such as New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland, and, using a mobile recording studio, had local musicians perform the same song, interpreted into their own style that and included contributions from artists such as Keb' Mo', Bono & Manu Chao.
Making their second appearance on the SNWMF stage are Rootz Underground, Jamaica's next generation of musicians whose star continues to rise and are on tour in celebration of their second studio album, Gravity. The group released a full length live recording as a free download that over 60,000 fans have received to date. The group employ a dynamic combination of a contemporary roots/rock sound, universal messages and energetic, compelling stage shows to go beyond a niche definition - reaching across reggae boundaries into pop music realms.
Also appearing are Ooklah the Moc from Hawaii, an American band with a huge following that play quality roots-reggae originals. And from Kansas City, comes Queen Makedah whose smoky vocals and roots stylings represent the healing properties of reggae music.
The culture of the soundsystem and the vibrant, prolific nature of Jamaica's reggae industry and music movement are explored each year at the festival through a wide array of recordings. This year when the sun goes down and the music on the two stages concludes, the fairgrounds' exhibition hall will be filled with the sounds of two of the world's greatest DJ sound systems including perennial SNWMF selector, Rory Gilligan of Kingston's Stone Love Movement and David Rodigan (SKY FM, BBC Radio) of the United Kingdom. Also mixing in the dancehall will be DJ Ras Kush representing the New York City soundsystem scene and Comanche High Power representing the Northern California reggae DJ community.

Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
As Quashie finished telling the last of the Anansi tale, the children begin to disperse, leaving the Kindah with their parents to retire for the night. Maria waited in the distance, watching as Drew said goodbye to several of the boys of the village, including Cuffee. At that moment, a woman, who appeared to be around the same age as Maria, approached Drew. She was dressed in and wore a colorful bonnet. She was an attractive Maroon woman in her mid thirties, though she looked like she was in her mid-twenties.
Taking Drew by his hand, she then led him to Maria. Drew, seeing his mother waiting for him in the distance, ran over to greet her. Maria crouched to the ground to embrace her son.
“Did you enjoy yourself?” she asked.
“Yes, mom!” an ecstatic Drew replied. “Can we hear more stories?”
“Not tonight, dear. It’s time for the village to sleep.”
The woman approached Maria, smiling as she introduced herself.
“Hello and welcome to our village. My name is Juba.”
“Hi,” Maria continued, “I’m Maria and this is my son Drew.”
“Hi there,” Juba smiled. “Cudjoe has asked me to help you settle in.”
“We’re very appreciative of your kindness and I’m sure we’re going to need it.”
“If you’ll follow me, I will take you to your quarters now.
Maria and Drew followed Juba out of the Kindah and through the village, coming to stop at a series of straw-thatched huts that rested on the east-side of the village.
“You’ll be staying here. It’s not much however it’s all yours.”
“I’m sure this will be fine,” Maria said.
“You’ll find all your belongings inside. If there is anything that you need, please call on me. I’ll be staying right over there,” Juba said, pointing to a hut caddy-corner from theirs.
“Thank you, Juba. Thank you, very much.” Maria extended her hand.
“Goodnight,” said Juba, shaking hands with Maria. She smiled at Drew, then brushed a strand of hair from his face before retiring to her hut.
Maria and Drew waited for Juba to enter her quarters before entering their new home. Once inside, they quickly found their living quarters to be quite the opposite of their home in Mo’Bay. The room was practically dark, except for several small-lit candles that inadequately lighted the room. The floor of the hut was actually the cold, hard ground. There were no windows in the hut and the entrance allowed for the dampness of the night to fill the room. Outside, the creatures of the forest made their presence known.
“How are you holding up,” Maria asked Drew.
“I’m fine, he answered, looking around the dark hut. “When are we going home?”
“Oh … I’m afraid not for awhile. Your daddy has a lot of work to do here. But once he’s done, I promise we will go home!”
As Maria tucked Drew into his hard bed, she could tell from the look on Drew’s face that he was already missing his home.
“I tell you what. You can sleep with your daddy and I until you feel more comfortable. How does that sound?”
Drew readily accepted the invitation and joined his mother in bed. Once they were in bed, Maria watched as Drew said his prayers. When he was done, he asked his mother a questions.
“Is daddy coming to bed?”
“Very soon, dear. He’s talking to Cudjoe right now.” Maria kissed her son goodnight. “I want you to get lots of sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day or all of us.”
“Okay,” Drew smiled, closing his eyes to sleep.

CHEF MAYRA - GREENS

How to pick, store and cook Mouthwatering GREENS
Everyone wants to look good, feel better, and have more energy. Billions of dollars are spent buying supplements each year toward this end. Yet we often overlook simple dietary changes that can provide our bodies with the nutrients they need to achieve the goals we want. Some of the most nutrient-dense foods available on the planet are dark leafy greens--the super-heroes of the vegetable world. Eating a helping of delicious, dark leafy greens each day can help keep you in tip-top shape. Popeye was right. So why everybody isn’t putting greens on their must-have lists for the grocery store?
Lots of people are unfamiliar with how to prepare them, especially how to cook the more mature greens, like collards and kale, so they are not bitter. Once the basics of cooking greens are demystified and you see the results of including them in your diet, you'll want them to make a regular appearance at your dining table.
HOW TO PICK GREENS
Arugula, beet greens, bok choy, collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, lamb's quarters, mustard greens, spinach, swiss chard, and watercress are only a partial list of the kinds of these superheroes. I also like to include green leafy herbs like basil, Italian parsley, cilantro, and mint, which provide many of the same benefits. Greens are easy to grow, so if you have even a small yard, consider sowing some seeds. Most greens can be planted in spring after all frost is gone, and harvested July through August. Kale, collards, and mustard greens can be planted again in the fall. They overwinter nicely and produce fresh growth again in early spring. If growing is out of the question, your local farmers' market or local natural foods market is your best option for purchasing fresh greens. Look for bright-colored, perky-looking greens. Pass by any bunch with brown spots, yellowing edges, or limp-looking leaves, and choose the more vitalized ones. Smaller leaves indicate a more immature plant, which means the greens may need little or no cooking. Their flavors will be milder and more delicate. Larger, thicker-leaved greens require a little more care but will have more robust flavors. Choose organic greens for the best possible flavors and to keep your ecological conscience clear.
HOW TO STORE GREENS
Vegetables are alive! They are respiring, which means that they need moisture and air to survive. If you store wet greens in a sealed plastic bag, they will rot quickly. If you toss a bunch of greens onto the bottom shelf of the fridge without a bag, they will dry out and wilt due to moisture loss. The best way to store them is slightly wet in an open or perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator. Fresh herbs do well if you trim off about 1/2-inch from the root ends, place them in a jar of water with a plastic bag over the top, and store them in the refrigerator. Stored properly, greens should keep about 3 days.
HOW TO PREPARE AND COOK GREENS
Fresh herbs and tender leaves like arugula, spinach, and watercress can be chopped raw and added to soups, salads, and grains, or lightly steamed. More mature greens like bok choy, kale, dandelion greens, and collards, taste bitter if you serve them raw, and often the texture is too tough for easy chewing. Steaming these greens actually intensifies the bitterness. They need to be cooked in liquid where the bitter flavor can be dispersed.
First you need to prepare the greens. Remove large stems or break off small ones. Fill a sink with cold water and submerge the leaves. With herbs, leave the stems and hold on to them as you give the leaves a dunk. If there is sediment in the water, drain the sink and repeat. If you plan to put the greens in a salad, spin them dry. Leaves destined for cooking can have excess water shaken off and be placed on a towel or chopping board.
The issue at hand is how to cook the greens so they lose as little nutritional value as possible while shedding their bitter flavors. There are three cooking techniques that I like to use when cooking the more mature, bitter greens: quick-boiling, simmering, and sautéing.
To quick-boil greens, bring two quarts of water to a boil. Do not chop the leaves, but submerge them whole into the boiling water. Use a wooden spoon to move them from top to bottom. To tell when they are done, use your senses. The leaves should begin to lose their perkiness and wilt slightly, but the bright green color will still be present. At this point, bring a leaf up with your spoon, tear off a piece, and chew it. If the flavor is bitter, let them cook more.
The greens are just right when chewing a piece releases sweet juices in your mouth. If the color is gone or there is no flavor left when you chew it, they've cooked too long. The amount of time depends on the maturity of the green and the amount of leaves you're cooking. For something like tender mustard greens, it should be a thirty- to sixty-second dip, while mature collard greens can take about five minutes. Once you test the green and get a sweet flavor, pour the contents of the pot into a colander. Save the water, which is called pot-likker. Many cooks like to drink this nutrient-filled broth, but I like to use it to water my plants. Gently run cool water over the greens to halt cooking. Once they are cool enough to touch, gather them into a ball and gently squeeze out the excess water. Chop them on the cutting board and they are ready to dress and serve.

STATE OF EMERGENCY IN JAMAICA
Fighting in the streets as security forces search for Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. Trouble in Jamaica is raising its ugly head again, 9 years of after 25 people were killed in three-day stand off with security forces who were searching for illegal weapons. A state of public emergency for the parishes of Kingston and St Andrew was declared late last week after barricades were put up, roads were blocked and several police stations attacked in and around Tivoli Gardens. The trouble has come about as after extradition proceedings were granted to the US Government involving Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. Mr Coke according to the US justice department is one of the world's most dangerous drug barons and operates an international smuggling network. He is also said to lead a Kingston gang called the Shower Posse, blamed for numerous murders in Jamaica and the US, and if convicted on the charges filed against him in New York faces life imprisonment. Residents of Kingston however view him in a different light and see him as a man who is fulfilling a role that the government does not, such as giving them money to support their children. One resident has reportedly rung the BBC (UK) to say Mr Coke provided a valuable service to the community - unlike the politicians. "If your grandmother dies, you go to him and he buries her," she said. "Okay, that's a fact. If you're a politician you're not going to find him, especially Bruce [Golding, Prime Minister, Jamaica], you're not going to find him anywhere in the constituency, so you go to him."
"You need your child to go to school - you go to him, and this is how it's been, this kind of patronage." Tension in Kingston has been high since news of his imminent arrest broke after the reversal of nine months of opposition to his extradition. Prime Minister Golding had argued that the evidence against Mr Coke had been obtained illegally by intercepting mobile telephone calls, but he was forced to change his mind in the face of growing public discontent, in certain areas and questions about possible ties to Mr Coke. This tension which had simmered all week with staged protests and streets barricaded in an attempt to stop his arrest and extradition, finally spilled over into violence as gunmen loyal to Mr Coke came out in a show of support as the security forces attempted to remove roadblocks which were being mounted with increasing frequency in the vicinity of Darling Street.
Eventually the Darling Street Police Station came under attack and in the absence of strong opposition from the security forces the gunmen grew more brazen and turned their attention to the Denham Town station as well. As the gunfire grew in intensity local hospitals were kept busy with numerous wounds and at least two reported police deaths on Sunday. Reports are now coming in that yesterday (Monday) the security forces have increased their efforts and plumes of smoke can be seen coming from the area as they move into the Tivoli Gardens, backed by helicopters. There are also reports from local sources of bodies lying in the streets. Security Minister Dwight Nelson has told the BBC that soldiers, in a joint operation with police, had broken down the barricades around Tivoli Gardens and are doing a house-to-house search for Mr Coke. "The purpose of the operation is to execute the warrant for extradition and to detain [Coke] so he can appear in court."
He went on to add the police are "doing everything in their power to ensure the city remains safe", while Prime Minister Golding has denounced the unrest as a "calculated assault on the authority of the state that cannot be tolerated."

Our organization brings medical supplies and educational materials to maternity clinics in Senegal, West Africa, and we run international midwifery exchange programs to share knowledge and skills. Our goals are: the reduction of infant and maternal mortality rates, greater knowledge of HIV and STD prevention, empowerment of women in their reproductive health, expanding knowledge and skills of direct entry midwives, or matrones, and wider distribution of necessary medical supplies. We are especially concerned about the increased medicalization of birth. This trend leads to overuse, and inappropriate use, of oxytocic drugs and unnecessary procedures that can lead to greater complications and endangerment.
We support the understanding that birth is a natural process, not a medical pathology. We also explore and embrace the elements of traditional midwifery that are safe, nurturing, personal and empowering, and seek to marry them with the best of what modern technology can offer us.

FREE GENERAL SMILEY
|
|
Greetings, reggae artist - Soulmedic from the Lion Camp here with an announcement and call to the greater reggae community for help. A good friend of mine - General Smiley of duo Michigan and Smiley was detained by immigration authorities this last April in Arizona and has been in immigration prison living under harsh conditions for the past few months. At the time of the arrest- Smiley was on his way to Arizona to get married to his fiance (now wife)- Linda, when the bus he was traveling in was pulled over with the intent on detaining Smiley.
Smiley visa time had expired and he was about to renew his immigration status. General Smiley has secured lawyer and has a great case for his defense, in fact there is no way he can loose .
Problem is is that the General is locked up with a 10,000$ bail in a rough place living in severe inhumane conditions and the case could take up to 3 years for trial to go down, so he would be locked up for that whole time for nothing, a completely innocent man.
I know General Smiley well and he is good man with a big heart who does not deserve to be locked up at all.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOW-- in Arizona, to bail someone out of immigration prison requires the collateral of a home OR in this case - payment of 10,000$.
We are looking for anyone that would use their home, business, or real estate as collateral to free General Smiley from the belly of the beast or some one that would be willing to put up the money or any part of the money to free General Smiley .
His case is allmost guaranteed to win and he and I would ensure his presence in court so that any money put to bail would come back regardless- anyone that did this would be temporarly be putting up a home or cash to receive it back within a year to buy a good man's freedom.
In the next few days Smileys wife Linda and I will be setting up an account for people willing to donate money towards Smiley's bail. REMEMBER IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW OWNS THEIR HOME - YOU CAN BE THE ONE TO SET GENERAL SMILEY FREE AT NO COST OR SWEAT TO YOU. This is no bullsh , no scam, i am a real person w a good reputation and a sole intention to free my good friend. I DONT WANT ANYONES PERSONAL INFO - THE ONLY PERSON THAT WILL NEED ANY INFO IS THE BAIL BONDSMAN.
Please call Smiley's wife Linda directly at 480 516 4695 or me (Soulmedic) directly at 530 277 0523 or email me at fadamedic@yahoo.com to help or for press inquires. General Smiley was sold out to immigration authorities by a woman named Gene Asher- an ex Jamaican cop who at the time of arrest - was acting as Smiley's manager. Gene Asher was jealous of Smiley getting married so she pulled his immigration card at a time when General Smiley was about to renew his immigration status. Not only did she get Smiley detained but also extorted money from several of Smiley's friends in a false attempt to secure him a lawyer. So a warning to the greater community -DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY REQUESTS FROM GENE ASHER ABOUT GENERAL SMILEY OR ATTEMPTS TO GET MONEY OR INFORMATION REGARDING HIS CURRENT INCARCERATION- SHE IS A FRAUD. Furthermore, Gene Asher should not be dealt with and should be boycotted /blackballed from the music business alltogether- she is a fraudulent manager, witholding artist monies, manipulating people for her benefit and causing unnecessary drama. Thank you for your time - Rastafari Bless- Plz spread the word and forward this message as many people as you can, THE MORE PRESS THE BETTER UNTIL HE IS FREE!!!If you know anyone that writes, edits whatever for whatever publication- plz pass this on. Artists, DJs, promoters , fans that respect Smileys contribution- pass the word- onstage and throughout your dealings.. Lets Free Smiley Now!!!!! Proudly presented by The Oregon Constant Gardener
August 13, 14, 15th 2010
Marcola, Oregon – (20 Miles North of Eugene) At Bob’s Ranch on Mohawk Loop Road
The sixth installment of the Northwest World Reggae Festival (NWWRF) delivers roots musicians from nine countries and three continents. Located 20 minutes north of Eugene, Oregon, in the foothills of the pristine Cascade mountain range, Bob’s Ranch is a private irrigated campground boasting free heated showers, 2+ miles of shady camping, hiking trails and a lush green natural amphitheater with a view for all.
This year, Friday headliners are the Twinkle Brothers, who have recorded over 60 albums on their own label since forming in Jamaica in the seventies and still awe crowds with their captivating harmonies and 12-piece band.
Don Carlos, original member of Black Uhuru and a long standing roots and culture legend from the Waterhouse district of Jamaica, also headlines Friday to promote his new release “Changes.” Saturday features Dezerie, the roots empress hailing from St. Croix and backed by Ron Benjamin and the Midnite Band. Dezierie blends the fire of a warrior and the guidance and protection of a mother in her passionate delivery of her lyrics and message.
Saturday night brings Ozomatli, a highly politicized amalgamation of hip-hop, salsa, funk and dancehall regga. Ozomatli was recently named U.S State Department Cultural Ambassadors and bring their high energy along with Niyorah (St.Croix), Tippa Irie (Great Briton) and more to NWWRF. Sunday brings Garaj Mahal, Humble Soul, Albino!, Marv Ellis, Loveness Wesa and more. A Latenight DanceHall slated every evening features Northern California, Oregon and Washington MCs & Selechtah’s. This year’s NWWRF hosts are Wisdom and J Ross Parrelli, introducing more than 30 acts from around the world to gather for a heightening musical vibration, raise social awarness and spread the message of love and unity.
NWWRF encourages sustainability and asks fans to bring reusable containers and enjoy natural cascade spring water, available for free all around the site. Also, “Pitch in and Win” by bringing your recycling to Oregon Waste Free’s sorting station and receive a raffle ticket for the chance to win prizes from their many sponsors. Refundable bottles and cans are donated to the Marcola Boy Scout chapter. Recycled kitchen grease and bio-diesel fuel powers the stage, site and trucks. All food waste is composted and wind power is used at our office. The food booths and staff/performer kitchen are organic and local. Through In Ticketing <http://www.inticketing.com/ , a tree has been planted for each ticket sold, totalling 12,000 trees over the past four years. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
NWWRF is Family Friendly.
Kid’s Village in the Grove provides a safe environment with a shady arts and crafts area, the Unity Kids Parade and song circles. Youth 14 and under are admitted free and family camping is nestled in a quiet cove.
Family and friends experience the roots of mystical guidance created by sunrise yoga, African dance classes, visual arts, community spirit, conscious music from around the world, delicious organic food, fair trade/sustainable businesses, non-profit organizations and fair trade crafts from more than 50 vendors to inspire your mind and energize your soul.
NWWRF’s success is due to the creative energy, dedication, skills and talents of organizers, staff, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and performers. With the help of major community participation, this annual event continues to inspire the masses to keep coming back! “The people of Oregon should be proud of what was on display at this year’s festival.”

INNER CIRCLE/BERES HAMMOND "FOR THE LOVE OF IT TOUR" 2010 MESSAGE;
|
|
REGGAE PIONEERS EMBARK ON BLOCKBUSTER NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH BERES HAMMOND
"Inner Circle is back and better than ever." The New York Daily News Most people know Inner Circle via "Bad Boys," the ubiquitous "Cops" theme song that typified Inner Circle as one of reggae's most successful crossover groups ever.
On the legendary band's latest CD State Of Da World (Shanachie Entertainment), the two-time Grammy winners create one of the hardest-hitting, most lyrically serious albums to be heard in recent years. Joined by an all-star group of guests, including the likes of Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Jr., Reid, Morgan Heritage, Luciano, Steel Pulse's David Hinds, Mutabaruka, Lutan Fiyah and the American rock/reggae group Slightly Stoopid, Inner Circle draws on classic roots reggae to deliver a timely, moving, thought-provoking set of songs dealing with violence, poverty, hypocrisy, racial profiling, and religion.
State Of Da World re-asserts the depth and power of classic reggae at a time when the reggae scene has become dominated by hyped-up computer-generated recordings too often highlighting sex and violence.
It all makes perfect sense when you realize that Inner Circle are survivors, one of a handful of pioneering reggae artists still around with the credentials and artistry to do it, with a rich history--especially their classic reggae hits with lead singer Jacob Miller--too often overshadowed by their pop success.
July 21st, Inner Circle will join forces with Beres Hammond for a North American tour that will run through August 29th.
State Of Da World opens with a portentous declaration by dub-poet Mutabaruka that ends with The depth and seriousness of State Of Da World makes sense given the history of one of Jamaica's longest-lived musical institutions; the truth is that Inner Circle have been a part of many seminal moments in reggae history. "It is the right time to do it," asserts founding Inner Circle member Roger Lewis. "We started it a couple years ago as a kind of 30th Anniversary of Jacob (Miller) being with the band.
So it is a special vibe in that sense. Then too, the world is going in a new direction and changing, kind of throwing away half-way stances, so we come hard this time. Also, our kind of band is kind of dying out and to a certain degree our band is one of the few bands people can remember who play a certain style of reggae."
Inner Circle is reggae Royalty. As teenagers, they backed Bob Marley on a tour of Jamaica organized by Michael Manley's PNP party. In the early Seventies, they were a rarity on the Jamaican scene, a self contained band founded by bassist Ian Lewis and guitarist Roger Lewis. Soon keyboardist Touter Harvey, an in-demand session player, joined the group and future members of the band Third World also were part of the early line-ups.
The precocious vocalist Jacob Miller joined Inner Circle in 1977 and the band quickly became one of the most popular artists in Jamaica, rivaling-some say surpassing-the popularity of Bob Marley there as they scored such hits as "Tenement Yard", "Please Mr. Officer," "Suzie Wong," "Forward Jah Jah Children" and many others. Thus it made perfect sense that Inner Circle was selected to join Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Dennis Brown on the historic One Love Peace Concert in 1978. They were involved in starting the festival that evolved into Reggae Sunsplash.
They were also featured in the film Rockers in 1979 and were the first Jamaican band to sign with an American major label. Tragedy struck, though, in 1980 when Jacob Miller was killed in an auto accident, shattering the group. Three years later they re-grouped in Miami and gradually began to record again with new lead singer Carlton Coffie. In 1986 they recorded the hit "Bad Boys," which was later used as the theme for the popular television show "Cops," which made "Bad Boys" a mega hit worldwide. They followed it up with another international hit, "Sweat," in 1989, winning the first of two Grammy awards and becoming one of the most popular reggae bands worldwide (the band has always been far bigger outside the United States, regularly appearing on festivals with major pop artists such as U2). Carlton Coffie was replaced by singer/guitarist Junior Jazz; drummer Lancelot Hall has been with the band for more than twenty years while Touter Harvey, Roger Lewis and Ian Lewis remain. Meanwhile, they had established Circle House, a recording studio, in Miami which eventually became a go-to studio for the likes of Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, P Diddy, Lauryn Hill, PitBull and others. Their album releases became more sporadic due to their busy schedules but they continued to perform concerts around the world on all continents. State Of The World is the fruit of all their experiences as well as renewed creative inspiration.
"Inner Circle has always been kind of flexible," notes Roger Lewis. "Chris Blackwell put us in that crossover direction when we signed with Island but when Jacob Miller came with us first we co-wrote all those hits with him...things like "Tenement Yard," "Please Officer," "Tired Fe Lick Weed Ina Bush." With the big labels you have to go pop to a certain degree and that's ok, we made a lot of money with "Sweat", for instance, but the root and feel of what we are has always been there. You see UB40 and Dave Matthews and Eric Clapton play reggae and have success but if you're a Jamaican artist it is hard for you to be a radio group. If you do, you get labeled as "soft" or "light," like Shaggy has been. When you get serious like on this album they won't give you airplay but that's alright. The message has to come through!"
