"RISEUP" AWARD-WINNING FILM - JAMAICA PREMIERE
|
|
Seven years ago, Montego Bay businessman Mark Hart invited his old college friend, Luciano Blotta, an Argentinian filmmaker, to visit Jamaica and to bring his camera. With no experience of Jamaica or reggae music, Blotta was immediately struck by the Island’s color and inner beauty.
The film he would make, along with his relationship with the Island, evolved into a love affair with the sights and sounds of Jamaica. Although RiseUp is essentially a documentary spotlighting Jamaican music, the film transcends genre and niche, seamlessly weaving three distinct stories into one inspiring feature-length movie that is both dramatic and vibrantly explosive.
Upon viewing the film earlier in the year at a private screening on the Island, Chris Blackwell stated that “RiseUp is the best Jamaican film since The Harder They Come”. International audiences have echoed the sentiment saying that RiseUp is like a ‘Jamaican Hoop Dreams' and the best movie to come out of the Caribbean in many years. Both Jamaican newspapers, The Gleaner and The Observer, have praised the film, with accolades like “A New Classic.” Directed and produced by Luciano Blotta, and produced by Darrin Holender, the film features appearances and performances by both emerging and legendary artists, with music by Sizzla, Daddigon, Sly & Robbie, Richie Spice, Turbulence and many others.
Always an audience favorite, RiseUp has toured the world for 18 months as an officially selected festival and special event film, screening in over 20 countries and winning awards such as the 2009 AFI/DISCOVERY SILVERDOCS Best Music Documentary Award. Earlier this year, RiseUp was chosen by New York’s Lincoln Center Film Society to celebrate Black History Month and a one-hour version of the film was broadcasted by many television networks worldwide including the BBC. RiseUp’s performances worldwide have revealed a special connection between the film and audiences from diverse backgrounds with people dancing, laughing and crying in their seats. Core reggae audiences and music documentary fans have lauded the film for its authenticity and entertainment value, while general audiences have praised the film for its original storytelling, inspirational tone and beautiful imagery and sounds.
In an interview with Australian press, Blotta stated, "I saw how much talent there is [in Jamaica], how flamboyant, different and creative all these people were, and it really inspired me." He is excited to finally share his seven-year project with audiences in Jamaica hoping that Jamaicans will appreciate this priceless portrayal of a uniquely proud country. Entertainment industry veterans like BBC’s Nick Fraser and HBO director/producer Marty Callner, have commended Blotta's efforts as an invaluable contribution to both the Jamaican culture as well as the medium of documentary cinema. It is no surprise that Blotta has found a home on the Island, making time to shoot videos for Jamaica’s talent and business communities. He hopes that RiseUp can be a testament to Jamaica as a positive and inspirational experience for Jamaicans and non-Jamaicans alike.
The Jamaica Premiere of “Rise Up” will be held at the Carib Cinema on October 26th in Kingston and will open in theaters islandwide the following day, Wednesday October 27th.

NEW JERSEY: URBAN VIBE 2010 FEATURES MACHEL - TRINIDAD/TOBAGO
|
|
Billboard-topping reggae artist Shaggy, pop princesses Nicki Minaj and Ciara, and the king of soca, Machel Montano, are joining forces with the Urban League of Hudson County for the Urban Vibe (ULOHC) 2010 benefit concert on October 28. The charity concert will raise money and awareness for organisation’s mission of empowering residents and improving the quality of life in New Jersey’s urban communities, and will be held at the Prudential Centre in Newark.
Hosted by 107.5FM WBLS’s Caribbean Fever personality Dahved Levy, and Terrence and Rocsi of BET’s 106 & Park music video countdown, Urban Vibe 2010 is a funky blend of pop, hip hop, R&B, reggae, and soca, with a power-packed line-up that also includes soca stars Farmer Nappy and Patrice Roberts.
By pulling some of the biggest names of each genre, ULOHC seeks to target Hudson County’s diverse ethnic communities in support of the league’s community development and human service programmes. “Our mission is to empower, promote self-sufficiency, and advance the cause of opportunity for our diverse constituency. “Through collaboration, outreach, information and technology, the ULOHC has developed services that help level the economic playing field,” said president and CEO of ULOHC, Elnora Watson. ULOHC was founded in 1971 with a mission of empowering residents and improving the quality of life in urban communities. The league works in partnership with community groups, Government, and corporate sponsors to provide services in the areas of education, mentorship, economic development, job placement, childcare, family counselling, and programmes for seniors. In addition ULOHC spearheaded the establishment of the Jersey City Community Charter School, which the State awarded a charter in 1997.
Annually, ULOHC serves more than 50,000 people. For Urban Vibe 2010, Jamaican/American reggae artiste Shaggy, who hit number one on the Billboard Top 100 in 2001 with the single Angel featuring Rayvon, and scored a number one album on the Billboard 200 with Hot Shots, will be paired up with Trinidadian/American pop sensation Nicki Minaj. Minaj’s single, Your Love, peaked at number four on the Billboard’s Rap Charts, and is currently at number 17 on the Top 100 with Trey Songs on Bottom’s Up. Her highly anticipated debut album, Pink Friday, is slated for release in November. T&T’s King of Soca, Machel Montano, began his career in elementary school with the single Too Young to Soca, and has gone on to have a 25-year career dominating soca charts throughout the Caribbean and North America.
He has collaborated with a host of notable musicians, including Wyclef Jean, Doug E Fresh, Pitbull, Beenie Man, and calypso icon the Mighty Sparrow. Ciara exploded on the pop music scene with the empowering single, Goodies, which stayed at number one on the Billboard Top 100 for seven consecutive weeks—the longest run at the top for any debut artist.

NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|
|
THE 41rst EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
Chapter Eleven
The next morning was business as usual for the Jamaican Maroons. Most of the villagers had forgotten about the near-tragic events that had occurred the night before. Instead, they were focused on completing their daily activities. For Drew, his morning began on a different note. Cudjoe, having discussed it with Maria and Philip the night before, decided it would be best if he were to take the young Islander under his wings and teach him about the Cockpit Country. Philip and Maria readily welcomed the idea. Who better than to teach their son about the rain forest than one of the oldest inhabitants of the Cockpit Country. The idea brought great comfort and relief to the McIntosh, especially to Maria whose nerves had been rattled to the point of her wanting to pick up and leave the village of Accompong.
Standing outside the entrance to their hut, Maria and Philip spent a few minutes with Drew before setting out to do some fieldwork in the forest. Cudjoe was present as well.
“I want you to keep this with you,” Philip said, reaching into his pocket. A moment later, he revealed a shiny compass. “You remember how to use it, right?”
“Uh huh,” Drew replied, nodding his head.
Placing the compass in the palm of Drew’s hand, Philip decided to give Drew a refresher course. “From map to field, the proper yield is East is least and West—,”
“West is best,” Drew said, completing the rhyme his father taught him.
“Very good, kiddo!”
Cudjoe, standing over the two and watching closely, chucked and said, “When I’m through with the boy, he won’t need anything to guide him through the rain forest. He will become one with the forest.”
Philip turned to Cudjoe and smiled. “That’s the idea.”
Maria crouched in front of Drew to talk to him face to face. “Your father and I have some work to do in the forest. We want you to stay here with Cudjoe.”
“How come I can’t come with you?” Drew asked, displaying sad puppy dog eyes.
“It’s not how come. It’s why can’t I come with you?” Maria corrected Drew. “Your father and I feel it’s best that you spend some time with Cudjoe. Get to know the forest from an expert.”
“But I want to come with you,” Drew pleaded with his mother.
“I know you do,” Maria said, caressing his face with her hand. “We don’t want anything to happen to you. You gave us such a scare yesterday. We both feel that by staying with Cudjoe, he will show you the forest.”
Wearing a frown, Drew glanced down at the ground.
“Now promise me you’ll behave,” Maria said.
“I will,” Drew reluctantly answered.
“I love you Drew,” Maria said, running her hand over his dreadlocks.
Drew looked up at his mother and smiled. “Me too, mom.”
Maria rose to her feet and quickly slipped into her backpack before joining Philip by his side.
“Come with me, Drew,” Cudjoe said, extending his hand. “We’ve got a long day ahead of us.”

ALPHA BLONDY IS BACK!
|
|
Ivorian reggae artiste Alpha Blondy is re-releasing seven of his albums.
The artiste, known as the Bob Marley of the Ivory Coast, is teaming up with VP Records for the project.
Alpha Blondy is the man who, by blending African perspectives with Jamaican reggae and putting that into a pop-reggae sound, created the template for what is today called world music.
The Ivorian was most prominent in the 1980s and created a succession of hit albums which are classics today.
According to a release from VP, the seven albums represent "Alpha Blondy's best work".
Those seven albums come from a prolific career which, in full, encompasses 17 albums.
The release from VP also said that while the Ivorian's music had been out of the marketplace for several years, it was still in high demand.
"Due to the high demand for these historical records, VP Records will again make them available to fans," the release read.
Release
Cocody Rock, Jerusalem and Apartheid Is Nazism are set for release this month, while Masada and The Prophets are set for a December release.
In January, 2011 Jah Glory and Revolution will be available.
Cocody Rock was first released in 1984 and was the album which launched the eclectic musician's bid for stardom.
The strong hooks of the sing-song title track established Blondy as a multi-lingual pop talent.
Jerusalem came two years later and features the original Wailers Band throughout.
On that album, Blondy switches from English, to French, to Hebrew and to his native Dioula. The idea behind switching from one language to the other was to keep with the theme of uniting Islamic, Jewish and Christian people through music.
Apartheid Is Nazism was originally released in 1985 and embraced the notion of 'world music' by addressing world issues.
Using pop music as the platform to deliver social messages to dance floors and radio audiences across the globe, Blondy was credited with paving the way for reggae music in the international marketplace.
The re-releases of the seven albums are a precursor to bigger things though, as Blondy is expected to have a new album combined with a performance tour of the United States in 2011.

LONDON: IS REGGAE DYING A SLOW DEATH?
|
|
The upcoming closure of north London record shop Every Bodies Music suggests that reggae music is suffering a serious decline
ONCE A popular music genre, particularly during the late 1960s and 70s when it found favour amongst the white working class, reggae music has seen a rapid decline in popularity in Britain.
The upcoming closure of record shop Every Bodies Music (formerly known as Body Music) - the famed store in Tottenham, north London, best known for its extensive collection of reggae music - has sparked concern amongst reggae enthusiasts, while the decline in the music's sales is further indication that the genre which began in Jamaica is suffering.
"Satellite television and Internet communication has had a dramatic effect on the type of music that's being made in Jamaica," says veteran reggae DJ David Rodigan. "Producers out there are hearing music from America and thinking that they can create the next Usher or Ne-Yo record. As a result, very little reggae is being made by young producers in Jamaica.
"There's also no longer any reggae industry the way there was before, in terms of CD manufacturing and 12-inch singles; all that is more or less gone. Dynamic Studios [in Jamaica] was one of the biggest reggae distributors and they closed down. I heard they even melted all the vinyl they had in their storerooms.
“Record sales are really poor and record shops are finding it hard to survive as a result. [Former west London record shop] Dub Vendor is now a café at the front and a small record store at the back.
“We’re now at the point where some artists are releasing their music for free. Tanya Stevens put her last album out on the Internet, and it was available via [German magazine] Riddim as a free supplement.”
Fitzroy Sterling, director of Every Bodies Music confirms that poor sales have contributed to the store’s forthcoming closure.
“We have seen a steady decline in sales over the last five years and it’s at rock bottom at the present moment,” he says. “With new technology, the younger kids can download the music they want and the older folks have got enough music already. As a result, people just aren’t buying music. That’s what’s led to the current situation with the store, though we won’t be closing for now.”
Reggae journalist John Masouri says that the sales figures for recent reggae releases make “grim reading.”
“The last SoundScan figures I saw were for July/August. Damian Marley and Nas [with their collaborative album Distant Relatives] were way out front with around 120,000 sales, while Busy Signal sold just 400 copies of his last CD and Gyptian sold12,000 – and that was with help from a US Billboard hit.”
Emerging British reggae artist Solomon, son of Aswad star Drummie Zeb, feels the genre needs to evolve.
“I think people feel that in order for reggae to be authentic, it needs to sound like it was made at Studio One 20 years ago,” he says. “I think that’s rubbish. Hip hop has changed, r’n’b has changed, and even dancehall has changed, but reggae, to me, is stuck in this old sound. I think that’s part of reggae’s problem – it’s not evolving.”
But while the statistics might not look promising, some feel the music is more popular than ever. Reggae star Damian Marley says: “Traditionally, reggae music isn’t a music that sells a lot of copies in terms of CDs, but live shows have been the source for most reggae artists’ revenue. And now that the music industry in general is going back to that live music element, it’s a great time for reggae because we already have a head start.”
Journalist Chris Salewicz agrees. The acclaimed author of Bob Marley: The Untold Story and last year’s Keep on Running: The Story of Island Records feels that reggae is in a good place.
“What is interesting is that although reggae shops may be closing in the UK and Europe, reggae has never been more popular. A few weeks ago I went to the Rototom reggae festival near Valencia, a phenomenal event that had over 130,000 people attend over the course of eight days. Sometimes I feel that because reggae first broke out in the UK, people here have become tired and blasé about it.
“However, reggae rhythms and dub effects are omnipresent in other artists' tunes, and in TV and radio ads. I think reggae has become so much of the mainstream in the UK that we hardly notice its existence.”

UB40 PERFORMS LABOUR OF LOVE IV @ HOLLYWOOD HOUSE OF BLUES
|
|
Review of show & photo by Gary Greene
Sept 29th, on a balmy evening in Hollywood, grueling, lingering, long US 30 year celebration world tour, for UB40, still is making their mark. One thing I can say, they have fully developed their own unique style, and any time I hear them play anything, I simply know it's them. I never tire, and that's amazing. They are so tight, polished, and articulate well worth an evening out. I felt quite treated, certainly not cheated. The band members, headed by Brian Travers, sax, and lead singer, now Duncan (Robin) Cambell, Ali's brother, who probably would have been the better fit from the beginning, had he not been pursuing other avenues back in the days. Things just work out for the best, don't they. The rest of the originals were there in full presence all doing their magic,
Astro, James,Earl,Norman,Michael,Patrick..
They all seem to blend in melodic , harmonic sensuous rhythmic waves, taking the audience by the hips swaying as ONE...or shall I say ONE LOVE.. The band went through their old songs, some of the, "What Are we fighting For?" CD hits, 2 years back. Then did a flurry from the new LABOUR OF LOVE SERIES, number IV (4)... The songs really moved me, some ballad love songs, and a few catchy upbeat reeeeeleeee KETCHY.
NOW a bit about the new CD:
LABOUR OF LOVE IV: Someone once claimed UB40 are to reggae what the Beatles and Rolling Stones were to American rhythm and blues and as they release the latest installment of their best-selling Labour Of Love series, the truth of this statement is undeniable. Literally millions of people from across the globe have developed a love for Jamaican music after hearing UB40, and the band’s commitment to their early influences is as strong as ever.
The Labour of Love series began in 1983, with a number one album and number one single (‘Red, Red Wine)’. This was followed in 1989 by LOL II, which spawned a no.4 single (‘Kingston Town’) and two US Billboard Top 10s. Another Top 10 album, LOL III, and single (‘Come Back, Darling’) was released in 1998.
‘Labour Of Love IV’ continues what has become a passion for the band; to share their love of reggae classics, some well-known, some not so, with the public-at-large. Recorded at the band’s Reflex Studios in Birmingham in the Spring 2009, the album comprises 14 tracks. Covers such as Delroy Wilson (‘Close To Me’), John Holt songs (‘I Don’t Want To See You Cry’ and ‘Man Next Door’) and Rocksteady vocal groups the Melodians (‘Get Along Without You Now’) and The Paragons (‘Holiday’) bestow this new album with such an infectious sense of joy, it’s hard to believe it’s the fourth in the series and not the first. UB40, just like other dedicated reggae fans, fervently want such artists – including Theo Beckford (‘Easy Snappin”), Errol Dunkley (‘You’re Gonna Need Me’), Ken Parker (‘True True True’) and Hopeton Lewis (‘Boom Shaka Lacka’), who also contribute songs to Labour Of Love IV – to receive more recognition, and there’s now every chance of that happening with these mesmerizing new versions. American soul stars Smokey Robinson (‘Tracks Of My Tears’), Sam Cooke (‘Bring It On Home To Me’) and Johnny Nash need no introduction here, except these songs were hugely popular within Caribbean communities, and had a lasting impact upon UB40 themselves. Johnny Nash was the first overseas’ act to cover a Bob Marley song and his ‘Cream Puff’ is a little-known gem from the very early seventies, when the Texan singer was being billed as “the King Of Reggae” in En gland. Robin Campbell saw him perform back then and says the band have wanted to cover Cream Puff for years. Labour Of Love IV is the first to feature another talented Campbell brother, Duncan, on lead vocals. Duncan would have been one of UB40′s vocalists right from the start had he not turned them down to pursue adventures around the world. Usually, when a world-famous band changes their lead singer, the transition isn’t exactly seamless.
Duncan was a natural choice however – not only because he’s family but also because he sings with such feeling, like a man who’s come to claim his rightful legacy. Robin, Astro, Norman and Earl also sing lead vocals on various tracks on the album, and such versatility – twinned with UB40′s remarkable consistency – make it another wonderful addition to the series.

Tosh 1, the youngest son of the late great Reggae icon Winston Hubert McIntosh, aka Peter Tosh, was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1980. He moved to Boston in 1985. He is currently an economics major at Northwestern University. After a great summer of festival performances, promoters are already asking the young Tosh back for more shows shortly after therafter.
“In Boston, Tosh 1 was introduced to rap and "That was when music was real,” says Tosh 1, who started mixing the sounds of reggae with loops and samples of hip-hop in high school. Tosh has a love-hate relationship with the hip-hop genre, and believes many of its artists have gone astray, seduced by major record deals, fast cars and expensive clothes.
"The same revolutionary spirit that once inspired me has been transformed into everything it once detested"; says Tosh 1.
In 2000, Tosh 1 decided to record a couple of tracks in the studio, creating a hybrid sound that blended urban sounds, but still stayed true to the tenets of reggae and its messages of social change, activism and spirituality. "It was like second nature, like magic"; says Tosh 1. "People just fell in love with it."
Tosh 1 is a revolutionary artist with an impetus to right wrongs. "I give people food for thought" explains Tosh 1, "about waking people up. I am going to expose the system for what it is. We have to be more conscious of our life here on earth and stop complaining."
Tosh 1's debut album Babylon Burning is slated for release in spring 2011. He is currently back and forth to the studio, working on his new single "Wicked a Go Bun".
This summer 2010, Tosh 1 was very busy on the US festival circuit. He headlined the Maple Ridge Carribean Festival at the Memorial Peace Park in Vancouver, BC. Canada. He also performed on the Mid-West Reggaefest and the South Bend Reggaefest, and in Minnesota he performed on the Bayfront Reggae Festival, and in upstate New York, he performed on The Gig in the Sky Festival.
He was also booked this summer on the Montreal Reggaefest in eastern Canada. Tosh 1 traveled to Jamaica four times this summer for festivals there - The Life Fest, put on by Spragga Benz as a tribute to his son who was murdered, The Western Consciousness show, Bunny Wailer's show and The Negril Escape Summer Concert Series. Tosh 1 was embraced and very warmly received in Jamaica, the land of his birth. This October western U S tour will be a special treat for all those Peter Tosh fans who have been waiting for Peter's next release, and for the younger generations who never got to see Peter Tosh perform live in the flesh. Peter's youngest son, Tosh 1 has now taken the torch and moved ahead with youthful strength and vigor to carry on the work of his father.

SAYING NO TO OTHERS IS OFTEN SAYING YES TO YOURSELF
"None of us is built to run nonstop. That's why, when you don't give yourself the time and care you need, your body rebels in the form of sickness and exhaustion. Taking care of yourself so you can better care for others is an idea many women I talk to still can't embrace. But think of it in terms of the oxygen-mask theory: If you don't put on your mask first, you won't be able to save anyone else." — Oprah
