GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.
|
|
There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).
Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past. GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists, legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers, connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes that are underfoot.
You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate your conversations and help create a new framework for a better world.

INDIAN HEMP - NDLEA ARRESTS FELA'S WIFE, FOUR OTHERS
|
|
NIGERIA - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raided the late Fela Anikupolapo Kuti's home located on Gbemisola Street, Ikeja, and arrested one of his wives and two others for allegedly being in possession of 340 grammes of dried weed suspected to be Indian hemp.
NDLEA Commander in Lagos State, Alhaji Sule Aliyu, who disclosed this at the weekend, said the arrest of trio and seizure of the weed were made after a tip-off.
He gave the names of the suspects as Najite Anikulapo Kuti, 45, who was found with 50 grammes of cannabis, Helen Richards, 36, found with 170 grammes of the product and Mike Arinze, 26, who had 120 grammes of Indian hemp in his possession.
In his reaction, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the agency, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said he was aware of the case which was being investigated and that the suspects would be charged to court soon.
In her confession, Najite, who sells drinks at her Ikeja residence, blamed her involvement in the illicit act on forces beyond her control, while Helen who used to be one of the late musician's dancers , admitted that that she used to deal in the product to sustain herself.
"It was the demand of my customers that pushed me into cannabis trade. Most of them prefer to smoke hemp when drinking beer," Helen said.
Arinze confessed that he sold cannabis in night clubs to eke out a living.
In another development, the NDLEA, Seme Border Command, said it has discovered nine more parcels of cannabis in a suspected traffickers' car which the Customs unit handed over to it.
The Area Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Nicholars Ajaduruonye, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.
NAN reports that Alhaji Sadiq Sahabi, the Area Comptroller of Customs, Seme Border Command, on Tuesday handed over 27 parcels of cannabis to the NDLEA, which it recovered from the car during a search. Sahabi also transferred two suspects to Mr Adamu Eijege, the Deputy Area Commander of the NDLEA.

VERMONT REGGAE FESTIVAL RESCHEDULED
|
|
ROCHESTER, VT— The Vermont Reggae Festival, originally scheduled to be held at the Rochester Fairgrounds on July 29-30 has been rescheduled for late August. The exact date of the festival has not yet been determined.
According to festival coordinator Mike Lee, the festival was rescheduled to allow both festival organizers and the town to prepare for the event and make sure permits were in place.
Police Capt. Scott Dumas, who said he had not heard of the event before last Friday, said that with the extra time to plan, local law enforcement will be prepared to deal with any situations that might arise at the festival, which could attract several thousand attendees.
The Vermont Reggae Festival has been a tradition off and on for 25 years, and at its peak attracted 25,000 attendees in Vermont. This is the first year the festival will be held outside of the Green Mountain State, a move that Lee said was sparked by some Vermonters growing tired of the large crowds.
This year's festival, however, he said, should not be as large as previous years. Regulations on noise among festival goers will also be in place, Lee said.

REGGAE NIGHT X: TUFF GONG WORLDWIDE & ZIGGY MARLEY SALUTE LEGENDS OF REGGAE CELEBRATING 10TH ANNIVERSARY AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ON SUNDAY, JULY 31st

KCRW’S World Festival
REGGAE NIGHT X: TUFF GONG WORLDWIDE & ZIGGY MARLEY SALUTE LEGENDS OF REGGAE CELEBRATING 10TH ANNIVERSARY AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ON SUNDAY, JULY 31st
Special Guests Include I-Threes featuring Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Mighty Diamonds and Ras Michael
The Wailing Souls Added to Line-Up of Special Guests
The 2011 edition of KCRW’s World Festival continues with Reggae Night X: Tuff Gong Worldwide and Ziggy Marley Salute Legends of Reggae on Sunday, July 31 at 7PM. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of reggae at the Hollywood Bowl, Ziggy Marley and his band present a special evening honoring the biggest legends of reggae music.
Joining Ziggy are special guests the I-Threes (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt), The Wailing Souls (not previously announced), Mighty Diamonds, Ras Michael, and host for the evening, KCRW’s Jeremy Sole. Previously announced special guest Toots Hibbert is unable to appear due to a scheduling conflict.
I-Threes featuring Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowatt, the most influential female singing group in the history of Jamaican music will reunite for Reggae Night X. Formed shortly after the departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston from the Wailers, the I-Threes provided the rich harmonies for Bob Marley's performances.
Formed in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica, in the late-1960s, The Wailing Souls fuse the harmonies of Motown with the roots and dancehall sounds of reggae. Nominated for three Grammys, The Wailing Souls have ridden the crest of Jamaica's music for more than four decades. Still one of the most powerful forces in reggae with over 26 albums to date, The Wailing Souls still tour globally and record new songs with the vigor that they had singing in Kingston's Trench Town decades ago.
Fitzroy, "Bunny" Simpson, Donald "Tabby" Shaw and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson formed The Mighty Diamonds in Trench Town in 1969. The trio has produced over 40 albums in their long career and toured the world extensively entertaining and educating the world with their sweet harmonies and conscious lyrics. Led by Tabby's soul-stirring tenor, their live show is a journey through the African Diaspora from gospel to R&B to roots reggae and dancehall. Remarkable for the fact that the three founding members have remained together for 41 years, The Mighty Diamonds continue to achieve stardom on their own terms, wrapping a militant message in some of the prettiest melodies around.
Ras Michael, one of the foremost exponents of traditional Nyahbinghi drumming and chanting, produces trance music with roots deep in the planet's most basic rhythms. Built on the groundbreaking efforts of Count Ossie to bring the traditional African-derived Rastafarian drumming style known as nyahbinghi into a more accessible and commercial context, Michael’s music blends elegant poetry and raw, visceral power with touches of mainstream reggae, funk, electronica, gospel and even psychedelia.
Ziggy Marley, five-time Grammy winner, humanitarian, singer, songwriter, producer and Reggae icon, has had a fruitful career, in which he has released twelve albums to much critical acclaim. As front man to Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, the group released eight best-selling albums that garnered three Grammys. Ziggy's first solo album, Dragonfly, was released in 2003. His second solo release, Love is My Religion, won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Reggae Album. His third solo album, Family Time, scored him a 5th Grammy award for Best Children’s Album. Ziggy released his 4th solo studio album, Wild and Free, earlier this month; the album currently holds the top spot on the Reggae charts.
By releasing his music independently on Tuff Gong Worldwide, Ziggy Marley is realizing one of his father’s biggest dreams. Originally known as Tuff Gong International, the label was founded in 1965 by Bob Marley, with the vision of producing, distributing and promoting his music free from the constraints of corporate label politics. Decades before artist-owned record labels were commonplace, the legendary Bob Marley’s vision was characteristically well ahead of its time.

THE MIGHTY DIAMONDS JOIN ZIGGY MARLEY AND THE LEGENDS OF REGGAE AT DEL MAR FAIRGROUNDS, SAN DIEGO, JULY 30, AND THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, JULY 31
|
|
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - July 23-Jamaica’s longest running harmony trio, the Mighty Diamonds, will be featured on Ziggy Marley and Tuff Gong Worldwide’s “Salute to the Legends of Reggae” concerts at Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego, CA, July 30 the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, CA, July 31. The Mighty Diamonds share the bill with foundation reggae artists such as the I-Threes, Bob Marley’s legendary harmony trio (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt), Toots and the Maytals, Ras Michael and others.
“The Mighty Diamonds, I think, are the one of the premiere male vocal trios in our genre of music,” said Ziggy Marley, in a recent interview from London . “You have their songs, “Pass the Kutchie” and I Need a Roof.” They are a group that I’ve loved since I was a kid. I respect them. Hopefully, we can do this more--expose a wider variety of musicians to people. Whatever I can do to show my love and give them some way to grow their recognition; that’s one of my missions I will continue in my career. It’s not just about me; it’s about the whole movement. We all help each other along the way, you know.”
On Aug. 3, the Mighty Diamonds will perform at another historic venue, McNear’s Mystic Theatre in Petaluma , CA .
"We're incredibly excited to welcome Jamaica 's classic reggae trio The Mighty Diamonds to Petaluma 's Mystic Theatre,” said Aaron Kayce, Mystic Theatre talent buyer.
“The Northern California Rasta community has asked for more reggae and we're doing our part to fill this void. The Mystic is known for bringing legendary artists of all types through our doors and there couldn't be a better fit for The Mighty Diamonds than the old school decor and unmatched acoustics of the historic Mystic Theatre."

Dawuni uses his fusion of reggae, soul and traditional Africa music as the vehicle to these aims and you can catch him in concert during "Global South with Rickey Minor, Stevie Wonder & Friends" on Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl. The bill also includes Sharon Jones, Mia Doi Todd, Bombino, Ceci Bastida, The Soul Seekers, Charles Bradley, Grace Potter and the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles.

VP RECORDS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF THE DOUBLE-DISC COLLECTION, 'WE REMEBER GREGORY ISSACS', AVAILABLE AUGUST 16, 2011
|
|
New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ VP Records) Saxophonist and producer Dean Fraser has assembled an all-star cast of contemporay singers and musicians to pay homage to the icon, who The New York Times describes as "the most exquisite vocalist in reggae."
This week there will be a special live set dedicated to Isaacs at Reggae Sumfest 2011 (the most popular reggae festival held annually in Jamaica). The show will feature live cover performances by legendary and new artists as they celebrate Isaacs' life and music.
"When my friend Gregory passed away last year, I wanted to express my appreciation for our musical association and love for him as a close friend. We'd performed together all over the world through the late '70s and '80s when I was a member of We The People and later with Sly & Robbie. I decided to do a tribute album, but had no money to produce it. I reached out to the reggae community and was overwhelmed by people's willingness to give their time and talents to make this vision real," explains Fraser.
We Remember Gregory Isaacs presents sixteen of the legendary vocalists' most loved songs sung by artists including Tarrus Riley, Etana, Romain Virgo, J Boog, Gyptian and Duane Stephenson. Including his classic hits like "Front Door," "Mr Brown," "Night Nurse," "Storm," "Soon Forward," "Tune In," "My Number One," "The Border," "Love Is Overdue" and "Red Rose" and obscure favorites such as "My Only Lover" and "Stranger In Town," the legacy of Gregory Isaacs lives on with this stellar collection. The album also includes extensive liner notes and a bonus disc of instrumental versions by Dean Fraser.
"I recorded the instrumental versions in a day or so. As I listened back to the tracks I felt like adding vocals could be an even greater tribute. Having worked closely with Duane Stephenson and Tarrus Riley they were the first people I called with the idea. When we started voicing, certain artists just seemed right for particular songs so, we went with the vibe. It's exciting to me that these younger performers will bring Gregory's music to a whole new generation of reggae fans," Fraser adds.
