HONOREBEL - BACK TO HIS ROOTS
|
|
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
South Florida deejay Honorebel returns to his dancehall/reggae roots on Honorebel Presents Reggae Series Number 1, a compilation album featuring new and established artistes.
Recently released digitally by Zojak Distributors, the set is built around the Soundcloud beat which features Honorebel on songs with Wayne Wonder (Put Your Drinks Up), Pressure (I Wish) and Akon (One More Slam).
Lady Saw, upcoming artistes Rachel Rene and Selena Serrano also contribute songs to the album which sees Honorebel taking another crack at the dancehall/reggae market. Last year, he appeared on producer Flava McGregor's Throw Back 'riddim' alongside Etana, Gyptian and Sanchez.
He says his focus is making more than just hot beats. "I want to keep my name vibrant as far as reggae and dancehall is concerned. But we want to make 'riddims' that are not dated, they got to have staying power," Honorebel said.
Born Richard Bailey, Honorebel has been around the music business since the 1990s when he learned the ropes at singer/producer Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotions in Kingston.
After immigrating to the United States, he recorded for several producers including the respected Willie Lindo's Heavybeat Records and Luther 'Luke' Campbell, the controversial former leader of outrageous rap group, 2 Live Crew.
Through Campbell, he was introduced to the growing South Florida dance and hip-hop scene. He has made a name on the dance circuit with the platinum-selling Cuba-born rapper Pitbull.
As part of his promotion for his new album, Honorebel is scheduled to perform in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya this month. 11-10

CHERINE MAKES TRAVEL CHANNEL FEATURE
|
|
A Woman's World: Camilla (host) poses with Cherine and her mom, Barbara photo credit: It's A Womans World (via Facebook)
(Kingston, Jamaica - Nov 2, 2011)- Dancehall Soul Queen Cherine appeared on the exciting final episode of The Travel Channel's documentary series titled "It's a Woman's World". Jamaica was one of four featured countries throughout the 2011 season, where the "It's a Woman's World" team journeyed to explore the island, its culture and delve into the lives of some of the country's most interesting and inspiring women. The episode on Jamaica premiered on October 31, 2011.
Cherine was handpicked by the producers of "It's a Woman's World" and was highlighted as one of Jamaica's inspirational, intriguing and empowering young female talents. Her life as a musician on and off stage was featured and the crew got a first hand look into her family life and rapped with her friends. "There were definitely many aspects of the interview that involved Cherine the person, not just Cherine the musician. Overall, the interview was broader than just my music", Cherine shared.
Taking them back to her roots, Cherine took the crew to her childhood home in Rockfort, a tough community in East Kingston Jamaica. The "It's a Woman's World" crew got a rare interview with Cherine's mother and sister and even a tour of sections of the community. The team including host Camilla and producer Julia Cornes spent an exciting and eventful day with the multi talented Jamaican singer, songwriter and actress Cherine, getting an inside peek into some of her daily activities. Additionally, the crew caught up with Cherine at a studio session with the legendary drummer Sly Dunbar from the duo Sly and Robbie as well as a band rehearsal at Grafton studio. After a long day it was time to unwind, the crew met up with Cherine at her 1st in a series of unplugged shows called Rockfort Live featuring her band the Rockfort Rebels. The Queen of Dancehall Soul delivered a great performance belting out her hits such as "Make up sex", "We Don't Stop" and "Coming over tonight".
"It was very important to me that the Travel Channel was interested in filming the 'real' Jamaica, the way a lot of us young people live, where we eat and hang out on a day-to-day basis. There was nothing pretentious for the camera; even them drinking bag juice," Cherine said with a wide smile.
This episode was filmed in Jamaica and featured other influential women such as reggae icon Marcia Griffiths, journalist Janet Silvera, veteran policewoman Ionie Ramsay-Nelson and even Jamaica's successful netballers, The Sunshine Girls. "It was an unbelievable honor to be a part of this program alongside such greats and for me, Marcia Griffiths being featured made it even more special," stated Cherine.
The Travel Channel is the leading international travel broadcaster, transmitting 24 hours a day in 20 languages to an audience of over 60 million worldwide viewers.
Catch the repeat of the episode on The Travel Channel International Saturday 05 November 2011 at 01:00 (UK Time) Sunday 06 November 2011 at 21:00 Tuesday 08 November 2011 at 13:30 Check your local cable listings or visit http://www.travelchannel.co.uk/ (for more details.

RASTA: A SOUL'S JOURNEY THE MOVIE STARTS ITS JOURNEY
|
|
Montreal was in full one love mode last week as the film Rasta A Soul’s Journey, directed by Stuart Samuels, had its world premiere on October 18, 2011, during the 40th anniversary of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema.
Capped by the sold out final screening on October 20 at Ex-Centris, the film, featuring Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast was wholeheartedly embraced and supported. Festival goers as well as Reggae and Rastafari enthusiasts were in their realm, creating a ripple effect that resonated amongst, Black history buffs, creative artists and the community in general.
In presenting global snapshots of Rastafari, through the eyes of Donisha, Rasta A Soul’s Journey opposes common myths about Rastafari and emits a unifying energy as viewers become privy to the universal impact of Rastafari. Patricia Scarlett, Executive Producer of the film who initiated the project, spoke of being pleased to finally see her ideas come to fruition and to have the film land on the big screen.
Celebrating the film’s world premiere, the cast and crew joined music and film industry affiliates as well as global supporters for an exciting Reggae party on October 19 at the Jello Lounge. Rasta Live, as the party was titled, included an entertainment segment with Canadian based entertainers: The West Can Drummers; Fyaa Flamz’ Won-J; Orthodox Issachar and Errol Blackwood. Donisha spoke candidly about her experiences as a rasta woman and got the opportunity to share and exchange, up-close and personal with some of Montreal ’s notables. Her unique and crisp rendition of Bob Marley’s War, performed with veteran Reggae crooner, Errol Blackwood, who played acoustic guitar, was moving; as was her drum duet with West Can Drummer, Chantal Lewis.
Rasta A Soul’s Journey, that has Marilyn Gray as co-Executive Producer, starts its own global trek now. The film will be premiered in cities around the world in the coming months. It was produced in partnership with Citytv and can be followed at www.rastaonline.ca.

GYPTIAN MAKES MTV TOP-10 LIST
|
|
(Jamaica Gleaner) - Dancehall artiste Gyptian climbed international and local charts with “Hold Yuh” last year, but this year he has secured a spot among the top 10 competing to become MTV Iggy’s Best New Band In The World. Gyptian, whose song was such a hit that it was remixed by Hip Hop ‘queen pin’ Nicki Minaj, is among artistes from 10 countries in a competition that began three weeks ago. The MTV Iggy website said: “At MTV Iggy headquarters we scour and sift through the internet to find the newest, hottest music from around the world. We compiled the most exciting bands we discovered and ask you, our readers, to crown the best over a six-week voting period. You’ve only got three weeks left, so vote!”
Other acts in the competition include Australia’s Angus and Julia Stone, Pakistan’s Atif Aslam, United Kingdom’s Ghostpoet, Venezuela’s La Vida Bohème, United States’ Skrillex, Mexico’s Ximena Sariñana, Malaysia’s Yuna, New Zealand’s Zowie and Korean girl group 2NE1. His manager Ivor Ruddock said the notice from MTV was something that would boost Gyptian’s career. “Indeed, it is a privilege because they choose from different genres and different countries. It is a good look,” said Ruddock, adding that they were notified about Gyptian being part of the competition in August. “It will shed more light on him as an artiste to the rest of the world. It will be shown to them via MTV all over the world. It’s just a wider fan base that he will be recognised with.” Gyptian is currently in the United States recording songs for an album scheduled for release next year. In addition, he said, Gyptian will be performing at Howard University in Washington, DC this weekend. Later this month, he will be at the Dominica Creole Festival. In November, the reggae artiste will be doing shows in Nigeria and Dubai, before going back to New York where he will continue recording songs for the album.

We are still working on the particulars for an online distribution platform (network/referral marketing component), including arrangement for appropriate releases etc. Also we are still yet to finalize equation for revenue share. However, to manage expectations it may look something like this:
- 25% to contributing artist - 25% to the Ministry of Education Enrichment Initiative - 25% to administrative and marketing cost - 25% to Jamlink.com/Vonergy Inc.
This initiative remains a work in progress and part of our digital approach to packaging, promoting and distribution of Jamaica’s cultural assets; uniquely benefiting all participating stakeholders. As our flagship Product, the ((( Jamaica Matters < http://bit.ly/oVz2Pd> ))) compilation is the first of many products that will be distributed through the "Jamlink Express < http://bit.ly/ooclrB>" referral marketing system; signaling our continued alliance with fellow Jamaicans across the globe... not only as exchange partners, but also as cultural ambassadors and trade affiliates for emerging products/services.

AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING: CHUCK FENDA, I-WAYNE & IKRONIK – TOURING NORTH AMERICA JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2012
|
|
Two of the more crucial hardcore roots reggae artists coming up in the international reggae arena are Chuck Fenda and I-Wayne. Both of these young Jamaican talents are currently in great demand worldwide. I-Wayne’s new album Life Teaching, released October 11, 2011 on VP records, debuted at #5 on the Billboard Reggae Chart.
Opening for them and backing them is the heavyweight Jamaican band iKronik, with Junior Jazz on guitar and lead vocals, Phanso on drums, Duke on keys and Isaiah on bass. iKronik represents the future of the “classic” reggae band. With years of experience under the name Gumption playing on the largest stages worldwide; having racked up millions of frequent flier miles a nd travelled many a highway and byway, the members of iKronik present that well deserved breath of fresh air to the reggae music industry.
iKronik has emerged from the lineage of the Gumption Band, one of reggae’s most consistent and talented backing bands. Gumption has been touring since 1994 and has backed the best of the best in the reggae genre. They worked six years touring and recording exclusively with the legendary Beres Hammond and they have also backed Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Barrington Levy, Ken Boothe, John Holt, Luciano, Coco T, Barrington Levy, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt, Chakademus & Pliers, Richie Spice, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Diana King, Lady Saw, Maxi Priest, Wailing Souls, Romain Virgo, Horace Andy, I-Octane, Gyptian and The Abyssinians, among others.
There is immediately great interest and excitement about this massive January / February North American tour package. In 2004 I-Wayne got his first number one hit song with his single "Can't Satisfy Her", which was also the first reggae track by a cultural reggae artist to be added to the Hot 97 play-list. This song spent over 22 weeks on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B Hot 100 Chart. Shortly thereafter came another big hit song from I-Wayne - “Living in Love”. These songs propelled this young artist to the front of the reggae pack performing on many major festivals all over the world. I-Wayne’s debut album, Lava Ground that featured these two hit songs was praised for returning to reggae's "essential roots". In 2007 his second album Book of Life was released and this release again propelled him to the top of the Billboard Charts.
I-Wayne is a favorite artist for many of the more roots conscious oriented listeners. His is very smooth listening music with uplifting messages.
Chuck Fenda has proven that he carries the title of “the Poor People Defenda” with songs like “Life Ruff Out Deh”, “I Swear”, “Haffi Win”, “Respect Mama”, “Gash Dem and Light Dem” and “Are You Coming Over Tonight” with Cherine Anderson. Chuck Fenda is currently blazing the airwaves with his hit “Real Man” and his hot new singles “Treat Her Right,” “Didn’t I tell you“, “Call On Me” with Cherine Anderson and “Warning” with Notice Production.
All together this January / February tour package carries a long lasting high quality show that U.S. reggae enthusiasts will not want to miss. DATES AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING.

DENNIS BROWN RECEIVES 'ORDER OF DISTINCTION' POSTHUMOUSLY
|
|
Twelve years after his death, the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emanuel Brown, led the list of honourees from entertainment who received national awards at King's House on Monday, October 17. Brown, whose posthumous award was accepted by his widow Yvonne, was recognised with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) for his contribution to the Jamaican music industry. Speaking with the Observer following the ceremony, Brown noted that it was a fantastic day for the family. Responding to sentiments from certain quarters that her late husband should have received this honour a long time ago, a gracious Brown noted, "Nothing happens before the time and Dennis is still with us... in spirit."
Brown, who died at 42 of respiratory ailments, rose to prominence during the 1970s wave of reggae singers that included Marley, whose music introduced the Jamaican genre to listeners worldwide. He released more than 50 albums and a long string of hits, beginning with No Man is an Island, which he recorded in 1969 at the age of 12.
Brown died in 1999 and is interred at National Heroes' Park in Kingston. Another giant of the local music industry, Millie Small, was also recognised at the event. She too received the CD for her contribution to the Jamaican music industry. Small, who lives in the United Kingdom, was unable to attend but requested that her award and insignia be received by former Prime Minister Edward Seaga. 11-10

JAMAICAN YOUTH ACTIVIST RELEASES NEW MEMOIR
|
|
It is the story that permeates the whole developing world: the best and brightest of their young citizens enrol in colleges across North America and Europe, and most of them do not return to their homelands. Gavin Hutchinson was one of the few who did.
In 2006, the then 23-year-old was adamant about returning to the land of his birth, despite acquiring permanent residency status in the United States during his tenure at a Florida University. "It was my duty to give the energy of my youth to Jamaica," said Hutchinson, and that was exactly what he did. Half a decade later, he has a very compelling story to share with anyone willing to listen, or anyone willing to read.
Better Mus’ Come was produced by award-winning filmmaker Paul Bucknor (The Full Monty), and is the debut film of writer/director Storm Saulter. The film has a sizzling original score and all Jamaican lead cast, with an electrifying cameo appearance by Roger Guenveur Smith (Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing, American Gangster) as Prime Minister, delivering the political speech that ended with the promise, Better Mus Come, reflecting his party’s commitment to greater social justice and equality for all Jamaicans.
Better Mus’ Come is a coming of age drama set in Jamaica’s turbulent 1970s, against the backdrop of the Cold War, a national water crisis, an energy crisis, corruption, and numerous murder scandals that gave birth to the polarized violence gripping the streets of Kingston both then and now.

Old school horn and vocal harmony driven Roots Reggae in the tradition of Studio 1 & Treasure Isle recording artists of the 70's in Jamaica with a timeless fresh American flavor that transcends genres. The music will move your body and motivate your mind.
In recent years Reggae has "morphed" (for lack of a better word) into Dancehall, Reggaeton, and the American hybrid Rock-Reggae. The musicians in Roots Nation feel that these Reggae hybridizations have in many cases stripped away the core of what was special about Reggae and what was left in the aftermath was thin, uninspired and too often removed of anything morally positive or uplifting to say to the listener.
Roots Nation's Mission is to bring back what was stripped away: real authentic musicianship, sweet three part vocal harmonizing, a classic Reggae three horn section, beautiful melodic guitar, piano, and vintage organs filling it up, a pulsing roots bass and driving one-drop drumbeats, and last but not least, Conscious Lyrics that convey messages of positivity, self empowerment, and songs that aren't afraid to tackle difficult current social issues and states of the world today.
"Reggae that is totally legit. The music is laced with pro level touches like exceptional horn work, and an amazing rhythm section that creates a solid wall of foundation. From note one I was inspired by the musicianship and band chemistry. It's a sonic treat I don't get to hear nearly enough. Very legitimate Reggae that is authentically and very professionally done. I would love to see, hear and experience Roots Nation live. Can you make it out to LA sooner rather than later?" - (excerpts from Taxi Music critique of Temperature's Risin')

REBEL TUMBAO:
|
|
REBEL TUMBAO is AfroLatinRootsReggae, an exciting new band that merges the rhythms of Afro-Cuban soul and the conscious-raising mission of real Roots Reggae. At the center of this creative endeavor are its two founders, pianist/composer/arranger Matt Jenson and percussionist/composer/arranger José Claussell. Matt is an iconoclast teacher of reggae music and a multi/culti/genre musician with an unbridled passion to positively transform humanity for the better. José Claussell is the world-renowned timbalero who has been with Maestro Eddie Palmieri for the past 18 years and also a passionate believer in the power of music to ignite true change.
Matt and Jose met several years ago when Eddie Palmieri was in town for a gig where Matt was holding forth. Both found they had plenty in common both in terms of a musical vision and cosmology as well as being muy simpatico on the bandstand; literally being able to read each others minds.
These two special musicians also have a heartfelt belief that music carries the power to raise consciousness and transform lives. They immediately set about putting together a band that might marry two of their loves and spiritual pursuits; the music & culture of Afro-Cuba and the music & culture of Jamaican Roots Reggae. Over plates of rice & beans, irie ital meals and many fragrant cups of cafe puro, they slowly envisioned the recipe for what has become REBEL TUMBAO.
Consisting of the traditional Afro-Cuban rhythm section of congas, timbales and bongo/hand percussion, bass and piano, they worked out a language that could handle the two close cousins of Clave and Mento like no other. Add two trombones and two back up coro singers (both in English and Spanish) and you ALMOST have the full magic of REBEL TUMBAO. The tip of the spear, though, is the inspired powerhouse lead voice of Toussaint (the Liberator) Yeshua, who has already blessed the fortunes of acts like Soulive, Wyclef Jean and Damien Marley. His recently released CD “Black Gold” is a gold mine of original soul and reggae vibes. Son of a Baptist preacher and a devoted gospel, soul and reggae singer, Toussaint delivers THE MESSAGE like no other.
Rebel Tumbao is slated to hit the streets, clubs, festivals and your ears in 2012. Right now they are in the final stages of finishing their debut recording and have launched a KICKSTARTER fundraising campaign.
OCCUPY!! Most people these days can feel that we are rapidly approaching a critical cross-roads in the development of human kind, or at the very least the “devolvement” of our economic system. Many of the foundations of our society are being shaken to the core and as a result the incredible opportunity is rising to make significant and positive changes in the way things are done and the reasons why we do them, and really, to actually take the Babylon system down a notch or two! Music has always played a critical role in such times of wrenching change and Rebel Tumbao committed to being a powerful, musical, artistic contributor to REAL change.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows.
